FAQ's

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
'Where to park', 'Where to look for race results', 'Which age group awards exist and how do I qualify', and many more answers to your questions!

1. HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO FINISH?

Cut off time of 2:45min (16+ min. miles). If runners fall below 16 minute pace, they may be asked to use the sidewalk and obey all traffic regulations. The finish line will remain open for 3 hours and you will receive a medal when you cross.

2. Race Safety

No dogs, pets, or strollers allowed in the 10 mile race. Participants must be alert to their surroundings and able to hear medical emergency vehicles, buses, official marathon vehicles and the Mountain Goat bike support team. The course is restricted to registered athletes and official race personnel only.  Walkers, animals, skateboards, in-line skates, roller skates, scooters, bicycles and baby joggers/strollers are prohibited.  We strongly discourage the use of headphones in both ears for your safety as well as the safety of others.

3. DO I NEED TO WEAR MY BIB?

Yes every runner needs a bib in order to receive a time and medal. Bibs must be worn on the outside of all clothing at both the start and finish lines in order for chips to read effectively. Your bib must be visible at all times. Make sure NOT to bend the strips and that all emergency information on the back of the bib is complete. This is critical should you need medical attention on the course.

4. WHERE CAN I FIND MY TIME?

Results can be viewed live on the Leone Timing and Runsignup website.  Please scan the QR code on your bib to go directly there.

Results will be listed in two categories:

Gun Time – time recorded when you cross the finish line; based on the actual gun start time of the race
Chip Time – your personal time from when you crossed the start line timing mat until you cross the finish line

5. IS THERE A BAG CHECK?

There will NOT be a bag check. Please plan accordingly as unattended bags present a security concern.

6. IS THERE ENTERTAINMENT OR AID STATIONS ON THE COURSE?

Yes, we have six water/Gatorade stations on the course, all highlighted on our map.  There will be no energy gels.  The streets are filled with bands and supporters for your enjoyment.  Be nice to all neighbors, volunteers and fellow runners.  We all need to work together in order to continue having this great event.

7. WILL THERE BE MILE MARKER SIGNS ON THE COURSE?

Every mile will be posted on a sign so look out for the fun!

8. WILL THERE BE A CLOCK AT THE FINISH LINE?

There will be a clock at the finish line and a clock at the 5-mile relay exchange point. You can leave your smart watch at home!

9. WHERE DO I PARK?

Parking is free at City meters on Sundays.

10. ARE PORTABLE TOILETS AVAILABLE?

Yes! There will be plenty of portable toilets in Clinton Square on Clinton St and on Erie Blvd. There will also be portable toilets on Stolp Ave, Hunt Ave at Creek Walk (at the Relay Exchange), and in Thornden Park.

11. CAN I GET A DIFFERENT SIZED SHIRT THAN I ORDERED?

You cannot exchange during PPU.  Runners may exchange shirt sizes immediately following the 10M race at the Race Info tent

12. CAN SOMEONE ELSE PICK UP MY BIB?

Yes, but the person must show verification – either your confirmation number or a signed letter from you indicating your approval - along with their ID.

13. WHAT HAPPENS IF I CAN'T FINISH?

We have bikes and communication in place to alert our medical staff on site.  We are able to pick up runners who cannot continue and bringing them to the finish line area. This service is only for runners who are stable and will not need medical attention on route.  Those that fall under the cut off time may be pushed off the road onto the sidewalks as the course re opens to traffic.

14. DO YOU ALLOW REFUNDS, DEFERRALS, OR TRANSFERS?

Yes, please review our Runner Protection Program for refunds, Deferral Policy for deferrals and Transfer Policy for participant and event transfers.

15. WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION?
The deadline for online registration is when we reach our cap or when our race starts. Registration is all online, no paper registrations or cash will be accepted.  Remember the longer you wait to register, the higher the price increases.  So don't delay and register today!

16. CAN I EDIT THE SIZE OF MY GIVEAWAY?
Yes, you can (until 4/18) To edit your size, log into your runsignup account and click Profile, and then My Registered Races. Find the Mountain Goat Run and click Manage Registration. Select the Giveaway Size Edit tab on the left-hand side of the screen, and update your size from the drop-down menu.

History

As a part of an early morning fitness class at the downtown YMCA a small group of people added a jog around a few of Syracuse’s city blocks.  As their fitness improved, distance was added along with four city parks covering all the highest points in Syracuse.  The two highest points are the water reservoirs in Woodland and Thornden Parks.  Special t-shirts proclaimed the group, “Mountain Goats”.

In April of 1978 a group of about 40 decided to run all four parks at once, a distance of about 17.5 miles.  Nineteen completed the run and received special ribbons that recognized them as “Super Goats”.  Eighteen ran Woodland and Lincoln parks, a little over nine miles and were dubbed, “Nanny Goats”.

YMCA Director Walt Price thought a race would be nice and plans for a true road race in 1979 were made; the “fun to Run classic” which started at Columbus Circle.  Dick Charles and Rodger Bowman were the first Co-Directors and were assisted by many volunteers from YMCA programs and the Syracuse Track Club.

A 10-mile course was designed using many of the characteristics of the original route run by the Super Goats.  The reservoirs were included; it was to be a tough course that worked you hard and gave you a sense of triumph when you finished.

The event included a 3000-meter run/walk to go with the 10-miler.  Jeff Wells, the 1977 winner of the Honolulu marathon was the celebrity guest and ultimate winner of the first official Mountain Goat race finishing in 50:12.

Over the years other running celebrities, who include Joan Benoit in the 3000 and Benji Durden, Jeff Galloway, Jerry Lawson (Goat record holder in 48:52), Maegan Krifchin, Marion Teitsch Sears, and Kevin Collins in the 10-mile have taken part in the challenge.

The course starting line has changed a couple of times over the years, however, the Mountain Goat’s character has not.  The race can be run by anyone who has the mental and physical determination to get it done.  Take the challenge and wear the Mountain Goat colors with pride.

Our Goat 4 Lifers

#1 - Michael Koval:

How long have you been running?  About 7 years

Favorite running memory?  Besides running and finishing my 1st Mountain Goat Run? Probably the feeling of accomplishment finishing my 1st 5k, CNY Gay 5k, after weeks of anxiety leading up to it.

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  As a way to leave my mark on a race I love!

Best running accomplishment?  Running and finishing both my 1st and 2nd marathons.

Future running plans?  More marathons and maybe a BQ soon

#2 - Maryann Roefaro:

How long have you been running?  I’ve been running for 11 years.

Favorite running memory?  My favorite running memory is finishing my first marathon - Wineglass- at 55 years old with my daughter Angela screaming at the finish line. We both cried!

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  Love the Goat - never easy - wanted to support the race.

Best running accomplishment?  Every day I can run with health & happiness! Ask me when I’m 90… praying I’ll still be running!

Future running plans?  Turning 64 soon … future plans … keep running!

#3 - Lisa A Chaudhuri:

How long have you been running?  10 years or so. Believe it or not, I use to be that kid that did anything I could to avoid running in gym class.

Favorite running memory?  A year into the pandemic I was struggling to think of what to do for my daughter's 5th birthday. Her birthday is in March and at that time many parents were still not doing indoor parties so my options were limited. She's enjoyed ruining for short stints with my husband and I so I thought maybe we could do a birthday fun run for her. I mentioned this to a group of friends, who also run, and before I knew it we had a frozen (she loved the frozen movies) themed fun run planned, complete with awards and medals. Needless to say, she loved it!

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  To make sure I stay active. Nothing motives me more to run than an upcoming race. Now I'll always have an upcoming race... for life!

Best running accomplishment?  Getting back in shape to run a half marathon after the birth of my daughter.

Future running plans?  Nothing specific. Possibly a half in the fall.

#4 - Matthew Chaudhuri

#5 - Aaron Gerega

#6 - Adam Effler:

How long have you been running?  I've always been a bit of a runner, ever since I was a kid.  I started running competitively in high school and acted as Captain of the Nottingham Cross Country team.

Favorite running memory?  Shenanigans with my high school team.

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  I've run the Goat every year for nearly 15 years.  I enjoy participating in the community event- the goat acts as an annual spring tradition for me.

Best running accomplishment?  I ran a sub-seven minute mile at the Goat a couple of years ago.  That's fairly fast for me for a 10-mile stretch.

Future running plans?  I just want to stick with it and keep having fun!

#7 - Dennis Delaney:

How long have you been running?  1996.  Moved to LA- No friends, no family around.  Saw a bulletin board advertisement for the LA Marathon.  Started training....still running.

Favorite running memory?  Crossing the finish line at Boston- 2003

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  Thought it would be a good investment.  If I am alive, I figured I would probably be healthy enough to run.

Best running accomplishment?  2015.  Had a Gold (1st in the Ludden 5K), Silver (2nd in the Eastwood 5 miler), and Bronze (3rd in the LeMoyne 5K).

Future running plans?  Nothing big.  Avoid the injuries today, so I can run tomorrow.

#8 - Mary Swan:

How long have you been running?   I've been running for many years, with occasional breaks for life's circumstances.

Favorite running memory?   I have been fortunate to have experienced several long training runs through beautiful parks and mountainous regions.

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  I wanted to support this great race.

Best running accomplishment?  In retrospect, it was a huge accomplishment every time starting back to run after getting out of shape.

Future running plans?  Keep going.

#9 - Bradley Fetes

#10 - Susan Hubbard

#11 - Timothy Riccardi:

How long have you been running?   I have been running since the 7th grade, but had some big gap years because of kids, work and some injuries (mostly plantar fasciitis).

Favorite running memory?  Probably meeting my wife after the Hartshorne mile in 2013

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  I have been running the Mountain Goat since my late teenage years.  This race has special meaning to my family going back to when my brother in law ran it with us.  I also wanted to support the Syracuse Track Club, Fleet Feet and Leone Timing for all their efforts.

Best running accomplishment?  I was the third man on the WMA M60 USA team for Poland last year that won the gold medal in spite of me,  but probably breaking 2 hours in a 20 mile race as a 22 year old.  Those were the days.  I remember  being at the ten mile point and not being winded.  I can barely get under 6:00 for one mile now.  Age grading is a wonderful thing, embrace it.

Future running plans? Mary and I will likely run WMA in Sweden next year and try to do as many of those as we can. I am going to keep running as long as I can.  I have a master plan to dominate the weight events when I hit 90 years old.  I have been looking at my 95 year old mom and this gives me hope.

#12 - Timothy McIntyre:

How long have you been running?  On and off for ~30 years.

Favorite running memory?  As a teenager I ran from my house in Camillus to a friends house in Otisco (about 18 miles). My longest run before that was 8 miles. It was a perfect day and altered my entire outlook upon life. “The body quits long after the mind.” Mr. V.

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life? $500 for the rest of my life seems like a bargain.

Best running accomplishment?  I have one marathon under my belt.

Future running plans?  Just hoping to stay healthy and keep doing this for as long as my body will let me.

#13 - Columbia Warren:

How long have you been running? I ran inconsistently in high school and college, then started to run more after college when my friend got me out to do early morning runs regularly. I then tried a few short races and eventually was caught up in the marathon craze of the early 2000s.

Favorite running memory? I have many favorites, including qualifying for and then running Boston with friends, running the Boilermaker with friends, running with my daughter, and running a long run on Mount Desert Island (Maine) with my girlfriend (now wife) as we trained for our first marathon together. We ran 18 miles - more than I had ever done before - up the center of the island through Acadia National Park, then back down the coast. Accompanying that great memory is the not-so-great memory of realizing we read the map wrong and had to walk over two miles back to our car...

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life? The Mountain Goat is such a great race that I rave about to friends. It's well-organized and has great crowd support - the drummers are excellent! I love the challenge of the hills, it's a great distance, and its position on the calendar is a great motivator for ramping up after the winter.

Best running accomplishment? Running sub-3 hour marathons at Detroit and Mohawk Hudson.

Future running plans? Avenging my broken foot at Lucifer's Crossing (Ithaca) in June and the Vilnius (Lithuania) Marathon in September.

#14 - Dana Finch:

How long have you been running?  I’ve been running for 8 years.

Favorite running memory?  My favorite running memories are always watching friends complete races that I talked them in to signing up for that they didn’t think they were capable of.

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  The Mountain Goat is my all time favorite race. The course is so much fun and the spectator support is amazing. Plus there are glazed and confused donuts at the finish!

Best running accomplishment?  Completing a 50K

Future running plans? Excited to do all three Peak 2 Brew relays with friends this year.

#15 - Douglas Farfaglia:

How long have you been running?  I have been running around 15 years. I like to do the Mountain Goat, Boilermaker, Ithaca Gorges, and It's a Wonderful Run 5k each year.

Favorite running memory?  My favorite running memory was running my first Boilermaker in the early 2000's. I had to make an impromptu pit stop in the woods because due to nerves!

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  My wife gifted me Goat for Life as a Christmas present. It is almost my favorite race to run each year.

Best running accomplishment?  Running 4 half marathons in a year.

Future running plans?  Get back in shape and run even more.

#16 - Lynn Cloutier

How long have you been running?  Since 2011.

Favorite running memory?  The first time I completed a well-paced marathon.

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  Every time I run this race, it makes me happy to call the Syracuse area home.

Best running accomplishment?  I feel good about keeping up with it for over a decade and through a number of life changes.

Future running plans?  No major plans or goal races at the moment, but I am currently working on training my younger dog to run with me.

#17 - Stacy Underwood:

How long have you been running?  I have been running since 2013. My friend roped me into doing a 5k mud run/obstacle course. As soon as I crossed that finish line, I was absolutely hooked on running.

Favorite running memory?  My favorite memory is running a (trail) Ragnar race. Cruising through trails at all hours of the day and night as the rain trickled through the trees. Something about that experience just made me feel like I was connected with the environment that I was exploring.

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  The Mountain Goat is honestly my favorite race and the course is something that I want to run over and over again. Now, when someone asks me "Hey Stace, are you running the Goat?" I can enthusiastically respond: "For the rest of my life!"

Best running accomplishment?  I managed a Half Marathon PR at this year's NYC Half (despite being too nervous to look at my pace until the last mile or so).

Future running plans?  I have been working hard to see if I can pull off a PR at the Mountain Goat this year. Plus, I have the Mount Washington Road Race coming up in June. 7.6 miles up a mountain...what a challenge that will be!

#18 - Matt Funiciello:

How long have you been running? On and off for 15 years. My friend Jim, who is now also a Goat 4 Lifer, and my now wife got me consistently back into it about 5 years ago.

Favorite running memory? The entire year of 2023 was a favorite memory for my running career, running in 5 different races and joining the Nottingham runners in our neighborhood.

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life? I thought the money would be well spent as an investment in my health and support for the local running community in the city that I love and don't plan to leave!

Best running accomplishment? PR's in both the 2022 Paige's Butterfly Run and 2023 Mountain Goat

Future running plans? Continue to support the donut shops (Harrison Bakery, Glazed & Confused etc) after weekend runs. Next I need to look into a Donut 4 Life program.

#19 - James Marsallo:

How long have you been running?  I have been running since 2007.

Favorite running memory?  Running with my family every year in the Turkey Trot.

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  My goal is to keep running the Goat until I hit age 80.

Best running accomplishment?  Conquering the Goat the morning after my friend’s 40th birthday party.

Future running plans?  Running the Goat and some 5ks every year to keep challenging myself and keep my body in motion

#20 - Patti Ford:

How long have you been running?  Started running about 1979 to help me quit smoking, so about 43 years.

Favorite running memory?  Monday Madness runs (3200 meter run under 6 min/mile pace) at Manley Field House with Ed Stabler, Terry McConnell, and Steve Nix.  We rotated the lead every 800m.  We did this most every Monday for many years--even after long Sunday runs. Brutal but fun!

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  I consider Mountain Goat Run the race that convinced me I was a "real" distance runner. Many people train for Mountain Goat annually and the event creates opportunities to make life-long friendships with good people who know how to work hard and play hard and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment that comes with it. My Goat time in 1983 remains my 10-mile personal best and one of my most memorable wins ever.  I am glad I am in a position to give back a little bit and hope that it helps this race continue to improve people's lives like it did mine.

Best running accomplishment?  I think I'd say my 3,000m run at Indoor Masters Nationals in 2000 was my best performance athletically, but I also liked my Boilermaker 55:58 in 1999. I was a late starter, so most of my PR's were when i was 40-44 years old.

Future running plans?  I've had foot problems in the last 2 years and haven't been able to run much, but I'm working on getting a good foot doc so I can run more than half a mile at a time again. I'd like to get back to running 4-5 times a week at least a 5k each time with a 5-6 miler or more on a weekend day.  A friend and colleague of mine are registered for the Goat Relay this year, and I'll need to run/walk it at this point, but it's a great motivation for me to finish it and get back at it.  Who know, I might even run the 10 miler again. That would be a great accomplishment for me now. And if my body doesn't cooperate, there's always participating as a volunteer, so either way I can enjoy it.

#21 - Ken Stack:

How long have you been running? On and off for a few years then consistently since 2013.

Favorite running memory? Creating "double 5k day" in 2019 by running an AM then PM 5K on the same day.

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life? This is one way for me to support our local Syracuse running community. I aspire for us to be first in upstate new york as a destination, gold standard running culture then beyond. The Mountain Goat Run is THE local signature race worthy of being a destination race for any local or out of area runner.

Best running accomplishment? Making the training commitment to complete the Philadelphia Marathon in 2022, my only 26.2 effort, at 7:47 pace.

Future running plans? God laughs when we think we control our future however I still expect more PRs for the 5k, 15k, 10 miler, and half marathon and watching a key member of my race team, 4 year old Henry, who is already a Kid's Half Mile runner, growing up.

#22 - Donna O'Byrne:

How long have you been running?  I started running in 6th grade for modified track (too many years to count lol) and I have been running ever since then.

Favorite running memory?  I have so many fun running memories. This one is from the first time I ran the Boston marathon. We used to put our names on the front of our shirts with electrical tape. When I ran by Boston College, the students all started singing in unison "Oh Donna" by Ritchie Valens. The crowd support there is amazing!

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  The Goat has always been my favorite race. I started running it when the course still included the water tower hills. So much fun!

Best running accomplishment?  I guess I'd have to say the Sehgahunda Trail Marathon which runs through Letchworth State Park. I unfortunately hit a deer on the way to the marathon in the morning and had to quickly find new transportation to the race. I started the race 15 minutes behind the rest of the pack. I was able to catch up and win my age group (without a chip start). I have run 14 other marathons but this was the hardest of them all. It was my only trail marathon.

Future running plans?  I mostly run trails now and I only run the roads for my favorite road races like the Goat. My goals are to stay healthy and keep running for many more years!

#23 - Christopher Straile:

How long have you been running?  Since high school, 2000

Favorite running memory?  Running the growler relay in Ashburn, VA https://www.growlerrelay.com/

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  I see myself running this race for the rest of my life

Best running accomplishment? Completing a 1/2 Ironman

Future running plans? Maybe a marathon but most likely more triathlons

#24 - June Dolan:

How long have you been running? I started running in Nov. 2007, when I trained for my first marathon-Chicago in Oct 2008

Favorite running memory? Crossing the finish line in my first marathon.  I cried in the arms of the poor unsuspecting young man who gave me my medal.

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life? It was a no-brainer! The Goat is very special to me for oh, so many reasons!  It was my first road race EVER in May of 2008, and I have participated in it every year since (even ran the full course in 2020 when the race was virtual). I loved the race so much my first year, I vowed to run it every year – so it was even a sound financial decision! My son ran his first Goat with me in 2016 and 2017 until he began serving his country in the Air Force.  In 2018, my nephew and Godson Jameson took the baton and has run by my side every year since.  He’s a GFL too! Each year at the Goat, I wear a commemorative shirt honoring 3 special young men who lost their lives too soon.  Underneath I wear my RWB shirt and stand with my fellow Eagles for the National Anthem.  I moved to Tennessee in 2022 but am still committed to participating every year.  I can’t stress enough how much I love the Goat, and being a Goat for Life is another way to express that.  I am so glad it was made possible!

Best running accomplishment?  Completing the 2020 Dopey Challenge (4 days in a row, 5K, 10K, Half & Full Marathon) in Disney.

Future running plans?  Just keep moving. I am no speedster, but love running.  Injuries and age are catching up with me, but I’ll be on the Goat course as long as can move –  even if Jamie has to push me in a wheelchair!

#25 - Jameson Squilla:

How long have you been running?  First run was 2018 so just about 5 years

Favorite running memory?  Running with the American Flag at the Mountain Goat

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life? It has become a tradition for my Aunt June and I to run this race together ever since I did it for the first time in 2019

Best running accomplishment? Not 100% running but completing the Ironman World Championship in 2022

Future running plans? Wineglass Marathon in October, Ironman Texas at the end April then I'm crazy enough to do the Mountain goat again a week after.

How long have you been running? I ran cross country in middle school and fell in love with long distance running. I even ran the Mountain Goat one year while I was in middle school. I started road racing seriously in 1995 and ran distances between the 5k and the marathon.

Favorite running memory? Coaching my children when they became interested in foot races. And two of my daughters completed the 10 mile Mountain Goat when they were in Middle school.

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life? It was a gift. And a perfect gift because it is my favorite road race. I ran it many times and the course goes through my neighborhood.

Best running accomplishment? I have won many races, however, finishing 2nd in the Mountain Goat is my biggest accomplishment because I had a goal to one day finish in the top 3.

Future running plans?  My future running plans is to participate in the Mountain Goat every year “ being a Goat for Life”.

#33 - Nick Mozzetti:

How long have you been running?  Was always into soccer as a youth, once I went off to med school I had no time for but it was an easy transition to switch to running. I used it to stay fit and relax from studies.

Favorite running memory?  Runners retreat in arizona. Playing in the desert and leaping cactii!

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life? I figured i'll be here for a bit lol.

Best running accomplishment? Placing 1st in age at the cortland triathlon I was pretty deep in back and the running saved me lol.

Future running plans? Paiges, Strathmore, Boilermaker, Ragnar NJ, possibly next runners retreat in Estonia!

#34 - Jennifer Berman:

#35 - Ryan Dague:

#36 -  Elizabeth Petrelli:

How long have you been running?  I have been running since I joined modified cross country with my two best friends in 2008.

Favorite running memory?  Completing my first full marathon in Philadelphia surrounded my a group of amazing friends and family, cheering & running. Finishing the race and getting my medal from Olympian Meb Keflezighi was the cherry on top!

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life? I had been hearing about the Goat 4 Life ever since my friend Matt signed up. It is a race that I loved the first time I did it & am making it a point to be a commitment every year!

Best running accomplishment? In college I made a full shift to only being a short sprinter and hurdler. When I graduated, I wanted to find that passion for running again that I used to have. So I did what I thought I never could do. I signed up for my first half marathon, which lead me to multiple distances races and finishing two full marathons all in my 20’s (Philadelphia & Marine Core) … so far!

Future running plans? Aside from running a Goat each year, I have some bucket list races to complete (Relays, Marathons, maybe even in other countries too)!

You can also find me doing the other half of running I love…being the support team!!! Whether it’s supporting a local race or when I’m coaching high school Track & Field. Go Bees!!

#37 - Barbara Anne Morisseau:

How long have you been running? I have been running or walking for over 45 years!  I started running when I was 11 years old.  Given the length of my running career, my knees recently have been downgraded to walking only, so I WALK!  But FAST!

Favorite running memory?  Being a member of a Division 1 Cross Country and Track & Field Team in college, even if this is ancient history.  I chased down many competitors in the final stretches of cross country/track races in college.  So satisfying!  I had the privilege of being coached by some greats, Peter Fox Smith and the legendary Vin Lannana (cool to be able to say that).  But best of all were my teammates, who were family then and continue to be family today.

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  This is THE SIGNATURE Syracuse race.  It has become more than a road race!  And in the spirit of being a part of this event, I want also to represent Team Nolan for life!  I do this for John’s family, Patty and Delaney, as it is clear to me that John was a GOAT in so many ways!  I will plan to participate as long as I am capable and healthy enough to tackle this course!

Best running accomplishment? Training for and completing the Disney Marathon and Disney Dopey Challenge with my daughter and bestie/college teammate in 2022 and 2024.

Future running plans?  This is it!  My major plans for walking are future Mountain Goats.  I will walk other races along the way.  But I am making the GOAT my yearly event in memory of John Nolan.

How long have you been running?  I always ran around as a kid, but nothing serious until joining the cross-country team in high school. That naturally led to the winter and spring track seasons. I remember doing 20x quarter-mile repeats in the cold wind. Ugh! Then I went off to college and dropped out of running completely. When I moved to Syracuse in 1985, I joined some colleagues at work to go out for runs. We'd go to Green Lakes on Thursdays to train to get good enough to join Jerry's workouts. Been running ever since.

Favorite running memory?  Boston, 1996. It was the 100th running of the Boston Marathon. BAA invited anybody who had run Boston to come and run again to celebrate--no qualifying time! There were over 39,000 runners at the start, divided into corrals of 1000 each. I was in #14, with a seeding time of 3:14. I had trained hard for this race. Long runs on Sundays. Jerry's Thursday workouts. Mile repeats in Manley Field House at 5:56 pace, plus or minus a second. We got up to nine per session.
On Patriot's Day I was ready to race. But most of the crowd was there to party. Runners were decked out in all kinds of outfits--animals, bananas, you name it. One guy was--I am not making this up--wearing a 6-foot model of the Presbyterian church in Hopkinton. The gun goes off but I am hemmed in on all sides. I gradually moved up through the field, increasing my mile pace...7:45, 7:30, 7:15. 7:05. I hit the half M point at Welseley College, high-fiving the screaming girls. When I get to the hills in Newton, I am ready to go. The final 10K goes by in a blur--under 41 minutes. I finished in 3:02:58. Not my fastest marathon, but certainly my strongest finish. I passed 12,000 runners that day. (Historical note: Uta Pippig overcame a 30-second deficit and severe dehydration, among "other difficulties," to become the first woman of the official era to win the race three consecutive years.)

Why did you choose to become a Goat For Life?  I love this event. I've been running the Mountain Goat since 1987. I think I have either run or volunteered--usually both--every year since then.

Best running accomplishment?  I am most proud of breaking 54 minutes twice at the Utica Boilermaker. Breaking 2:48 at the NYC marathon in 1993 was another.

Future running plans?  Keep running the Goat, the Boilermaker and cross-country for as long as I am able. And I'd like to run Boston again

Rosemarie Nelson (2025)

Rosemarie Nelson has been involved with the race for nearly 30 years, most recently serving as president of the Mountain Goat Run Foundation, a position she has held since 2017. Rosemarie served as race director during the challenging Covid pandemic, which temporarily moved the event to the fall for the first time ever.

Rosemarie’s roots with the Goat run deep. She first ran the race in 1983 and PRed just a year later with a time of 1:15. She won her age group several times as well as a handful of Time Bonus awards during her 17 successful completions of the challenging course.

Her contributions to the Mountain Goat have secured the race as one of the most beloved and revered running events in Central New York and firmly within the fabric of Central New York traditions and lore. She is the creator of the Mountain Goat Relay, allowing teams of runners to complete the course with each person completing five miles; she created a Mountain Goat archive at the Onondaga Historical Association; helped coordinate four course changes; expanded the event’s social media presence; expanded title sponsors ensuring the race’s current health and longevity; created an internship program with Syracuse University; and beefed up the Mountain Goat’s board and staff.

Len Barry (2025)

Volunteer Coordinator Len Barry first ran the Mountain Run in the early 1990s. After several years of racing and volunteering, he joined the race committee in 2014 and his dedication and responsibilities in making the event a reality have only grown each year.

The Mountain Goat Run would not be possible without hundreds of volunteers along the course and in Clinton Square, all of whom Len Barry recruits and wrangles. Len coordinates the mile captains along with their teams for on-course support. He manages volunteer assignments and develops the schedules for volunteer tasks through communications prior to the event and day of. Len works closely with the Mountain Goat Race Director, of which he has worked with several, to plan the annual layout of Clinton Square. He has also been instrumental in mapping training runs, the event-day route and coordinating volunteers and Syracuse Police support to keep runners safe on the 10-mile course.

Len also created a brigade of bicycle escorts to lead and monitor all runners and barricades on course during the race, which is critical to the safety of all runners and spectators. Len has coordinated all traffic volunteers, maps and Syracuse Police’s support, at our training runs for more than 10 years. He has led the way in the resurrection of the SuperGoat / NannyGoat and created recognition awards as well.

Bill Pinkel, Jr. and Letizia and the Z Band (2025)

For nearly 20 years, the dynamic duo of Bill Pinkel, Jr. and his wife Letizia, lead singer with Letizia and the Z Band, have been central to making the Mountain Goat a memorable party for all. As Entertainment Director, Bill Pinkel, Jr. coordinated all entertainment for the Mountain Goat Run including all on-course bands and music as well as entertainment for the post-race party in Clinton Square. He volunteered countless hours to the role over 20 years before passing away in late 2024.

Bill recruited, scheduled and secured all on-course music as well as the Clinton Square stage and its sound for the post-race party that is a draw for thousands of people including runners, their fans, friends and families. Bill also managed the speaker system at the start and finish line and was an all-around go-to guy for race day logistics. Bill was ever-present and stepped up wherever and whenever needed without ever being asked.

The race would never have had Bill’s invaluable help were it not for his wife’s original involvement as Letizia and the Z Band. Letizia and her band were recruited to play at the post-race party nearly 20 years ago and their involvement and dedication to the event has never wavered. Letizia headlined the post-race party in Clinton Square several times before moving her talents to one of the most revered parts of the course: the Colvin Street hill. Every year, Letizia and her band sing along to the intoxicating and motivating sounds of more than a dozen drummers who coax hundreds of runners up the challenging hill.

Mountain Goat runners often say they have a love/hate relationship with the Colvin hill because of its steepness but Letizia, the Z-band and their band of drummers carry them up the hill year after year. The Colvin Street drummers are as iconic to the Goat as any part of the race, thanks to Letizia’s immeasurable talents and efforts.

Laurel Leone (2024)

Laurel (Burdick) Leone is a 2002 Fayetteville-Manlius graduate whose love and skill for running originated in high school. Laurel has long been an impressive athlete, participating in varsity cross-country and indoor/outdoor track under the training and guidance of legendary coach, Bill Aris.

Highlights of her early running career include New York state championship in cross-country as a sophomore and the 3000-meter event in outdoor track as a junior.  She also was a three-time Foot Locker National Finalist from 1999 to 2001. She went on to earn an athletic scholarship at Boston College and became an All-American in her senior year of cross-country. In 2017, she was inducted into the F-M Athletic Hall of Fame.

Post collegiately, Laurel trained with a small local elite group, Stotan Racing, headed by John and Bill Aris. An impressive achievement of her post-college running career was her 2010 Boston Marathon finish of 2:44:16, which qualified her for the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials. Laurel has won the Mountain Goat run a record-breaking six times and has cut the tape at countless races across Central New York. Her name is synonymous with dominance in women’s running locally, from 5Ks to half marathons.

Laurel is a busy mom to two kids, Jack, 12 and Hannah, 9, and she and her husband, Pat, own and operate Leone Timing and Result Services.

Pat Riccardi (2024)

If one were to sum up the attributes of an inductee to the Mountain Goat Hall of Fame, it would likely look something like that of 2024 inductee Dr. Pat Riccardi. From his first participation in the Goat in 1982, he has run some iteration of approximately 30 Mountain Goat weekends. Pat is a multiple age group award winner over his history of running the race. But his contributions and involvement in the race didn’t stop there.

Pat previously served on both the Mountain Goat Race Committee and Board of Directors. During a particularly crucial time in the race’s history, he also served as the race’s medical director. Pat established many of the protocols, policies and procedures that are still in place today to keep runners safe should they need medical help or treatment during the event.

For a long period of time, Pat’s race weekend went something like this: coordinate with the medical personnel just before the start of the race; assist on race morning setting up the infrastructure of the finish line medical response area; go out with Jack “Water Boy” Stauffer to drop off water at the water stops; come back and run one of the races. Once his event was over, he’d often work the finish line as a volunteer.

Outside of the Mountain Goat, Pat is a vital member of the Syracuse Track Club having received multiple awards including the Dave Beach Humanitarian Award. He coordinates the STC’s UltraVet Men’s team for the club’s team running efforts. Most importantly (to some, at least) he is the de-facto leader of the STC Grumpy Old Men Mountain Running Team.

Jack Stauffer (2024)

There are few elements of The Mountain Goat Run that Jack Stauffer has not been involved in. Stauffer, spent 20 years on the Mountain Goat Race committee. He was instrumental in countless parts of Syracuse’s most iconic road race including serving as one of the original water czar’s (back when 25 volunteers manned trash-can water stations on the course for about 500 runners). As the race grew, so did Stauffer’s water efforts as the volunteer staff swelled to more than 130 volunteers serving 2,500 runners.

Jack’s contributions to the Mountain Goat have been quietly influential for many years. During that time, he created the race application booklet before online registration was available, worked countless pre-race training runs and spent three years on the Mountain Goat Foundation board.

Jack has run the Mountain Goat eight times – usually crossing the start and finish lines in between helping set up and take down portions of the race, including all of those critical water stations. He has run the Mountain Goat 3K three times including a top 10 finish at age 49.

In addition to his many contributions to the Mountain Goat, Jack has been instrumental in the Central New York running community in just as many ways. The Dave Beach Humanitarian Award recipient served as vice president of the Syracuse Track Club for 10 years, produced its newsletter and website for nearly twice that long and is the founder and former race director of the Super Couch Potato 5k. He has also completed 24 marathons including seven in Boston.

Our Parks and Landmarks Along the Course

Start and Finish in Clinton Square where the Fountain spouts all summer and the ice rink shows off our community Christmas Tree.

Head down Salina St. right by the Landmark Theater.  This Syracuse treasure is noted for its historical and cultural significance.

For the first 1.5 miles you can settle in and get into an early rhythm.  Then comes the turn up stately Summit Avenue.  Some of the most beautiful and historic homes are located here.

Hancock Drive offers great support and a beautiful tree lined street that takes you through the 3.5 mile mark.  From there the sights and sounds of Onondaga Park will await you.

As you encounter the first hills heading to Goat Fest in the Strathmore Neighborhood, you enter Onondaga Park and the beautiful gazebo on Hiawatha Lake.

Upper Onondaga Park peaks (quite literally) with the Mountain Goat Hall of Fame Monument.  The monument enshrines a few key individuals who have made a lasting impact on the Mountain Goat Run over the years.  Check out the view of the JMA Wireless Dome!

Check out all the Mountain Goat Run Memorial Pavers leading up to it as well.  Some of those bricks are inscribed with a name, PR, special message or a memorial to a loved one.

Cruise down the very steep hill to Lower Onondaga Park and you are in an oasis within the city.  The Valley and the Colvin Hill await you!

The newest course change brings you to the Creek Walk where the Onondaga Creek gurgles along your path and there isn't a car anywhere.

The Creek Walk borders Kirk Park, a favorite for the neighborhood Pop Warner football program.

The Colvin Street hill just keeps coming at you over the better part of one-half mile.  The John A. Lally Athletics Complex will be a great sight as you start your tour through parts of the Syracuse University campus and Thornden Park.

The last climb up to Thornden Park won't disappoint as you as you enter the park at the E. M. Mills Rose Garden, a spectacular burst of blossoms and color by June.

You might miss Forman Park with a bronze memorial of early civic leaders, Joshua Forman and Lewis H. Redfield as you race to the Finish back in Clinton Square.

MOUNTAIN GOAT TWO PERSON RELAY- FAQ

Tell Me About the Relay!
This exciting event will allow you to tackle half the course while pairing up with a friend or colleague to complete 'The Goat'. Each runner will run a five mile leg, with an exchange to occur on the Creekwalk near Hunt Avenue. The first relay runner will receive their medal under the arch after they cross the exchange zone! Names and teams will be announced as well. Live goats and music will make this exchange feel like you are finishing in Clinton Sq.

How does the Exchange work?
Each runner's time is tracked by your bib. The team will have two splits: the five mile time and the total team time. For enhanced safety, there will be no “exchange” of a wristband as in years past. There will be bathroom facilities available at the Exchange Zone. Medical personnel will be on the course and quickly available in the event of an emergency. There is a water stop nearby, as well as bottled water on hand.

Note- please avoid the area surrounding the five mile mark to avoid any impact to our timing systems.

I'm the first relay runner on my team. What do I do?
Start with everyone else and have fun! You'll see signs for the exchange zone as you approach Onondaga Creek Parkway and Hunt Avenue. Once you cross the exchange zone and your relay partner begins running, pick up your medal! It will be waiting for you at the Upstate Orthopedics tent. A bus will be waiting to take you back to Clinton Square. Please make sure you check in with the relay volunteers when you complete your leg- we want to ensure that you get back to the starting area safely and that no one is left behind. The buses will drop participants off within a few blocks of the finish line. Note- the buses will depart/return to Hunt Avenue at the sole discretion of the Relay Race Director.

I'm the second relay runner on my team. What do I do?
The Mountain Goat run will bus you down to the exchange zone prior to the start of the race. Two buses will be parked at the corner of Clinton & Water Street, near the Federal Building. Buses will leave Clinton Square for Kirk Park at 9AM sharp- please make sure you are on the bus with time to spare. Check in with the volunteers so we can ensure we get you to the exchange zone safely and that no one is left behind. Once your relay partner crosses the “exchange”, run with everyone else and have fun!

Note- there IS NO PARKING AVAILABLE AT HUNT AVENUE- so please ensure you are on time for the bus.

Can I leave something on the buses for my relay team member?

The Mountain Goat accepts no liability or responsibility for ANYTHING brought onto the buses by our relay runners.

What an Accomplishment! Do both of us get medals?
YES! The first relay team member will get their medal at the exchange zone! Look for the Upstate Orthopedics tent. The second relay team member will receive their medal after they cross the finish line. In case a mistake is made- please follow up and we’ll ensure you receive your medal.

Anything else I should know?
1. Please make sure your bib is facing front and visible. It helps us notify the second relay runner that you are approaching…

2. There will be entertainment at the exchange zone- including music, live goats, runner names being announced, and more to come!

3. Please do not approach the five mile mark. Once complete, please stay near the exchange zone and away from the timing mats to avoid any data issues for our timing team.
