The 39th Annual The Ben to The Shore Bike Tour on Sunday, July 26th, 2026 is a charity bike ride that raises money to provide necessary financial relief for the families of fallen or critically injured first responders and cultivate positive relationships and interactions between police officers and the children in the communities they serve.

There are 3 route options available: the full 65-mile route from Philadelphia to Atlantic City; the 30-mile route from Hammonton, NJ to Atlantic City; and the 10-mile route from Galloway, NJ to Atlantic City.  Upon arrival at the finish line at the Showboat Hotel, riders are greeted by friends and family, volunteers and supporters where we celebrate their amazing physical accomplishment and raise additional funds at our legendary after party.

About the Ride

Participating riders have the option of cycling the traditional 65-mile route from the base of The Ben Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia to Atlantic City; a 30-mile course from Hammonton, NJ to Atlantic City; or a 10-mile course from Galloway, NJ to Atlantic City

All routes will end at the finish line at the Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City. Riders are greeted by friends and family, volunteers, and supporters at the outdoor parking lot at The Showboat Hotel to celebrate their amazing physical accomplishment and raise additional funds.

In addition to the registration fee, ALL 65-mile, 30-mile, and 10-mile riders are required to raise an additional $250 to participate.

The Ben to The Shore also offers a virtual option called “What’s Your 65?”, where participants can raise money doing 65 of anything – eating 65 donuts, picking up 65 pieces of trash in your neighborhood, or playing 65 rounds of Pickle Ball… The options are endless.

You can participate in the “What’s Your 65?” option for a $30 registration fee, plus $100 in donations to receive your t-shirt & medal in the mail for the virtual event.

Bike Info & Safety Check

It is important for your bike to be in good working order for the ride, which is why we implement a mandatory bike safety check to participate. Having a bike that is in proper shape will help make the ride easier for you and help to ensure the safety of yourself and other riders around you.

CERTIFIED BIKE SHOPS

*Please check back frequently as we update our list.*

Bring your bike to one of our certified bike shops listed below for a free bike safety check. They will visually inspect your bike for any problems and suggest repairs. Some bike shops offer discounts on repairs, which are listed below.

After your bike passes inspection, the certified bike shop will give you a red The Ben to The Shore Bike Certification band which must be wrapped around your bike the day of the ride.

If your bike shop isn't listed, please bring this form to your shop of choice, ask them to follow the checklist, and sign the form stating that your bike is in good working order. Non-certified shops do not have our bike certification bands so bring your signed form to bib pickup and we will give you your certification band.

The bike certification band will allow you to access our complimentary bike services along the route and will give you priority should any issues occur. If you do not have your certification band, you risk potential charges from our bike shops on the route and being moved to the back of the line while those with the certification are helped first.

From walking 65 miles to eating 65 donuts to playing 65 rounds of tennis, the options are endless. We also always need help from volunteers at the start, along the route, and at the after party. FUNDRAISING TIPS

  1. Start Now.
The sooner you start asking, the more money you will raise.

  2. Develop a list of prospective donors.
Start with your email address book and also think about clubs and organizations you belong to. Your fundraising page allows you to import your entire address book, as well as link your fundraising page to your Facebook and Twitter accounts. Then, contact everyone you know. You may be surprised who gives!

  3. Customize your personal fundraising page.
The most compelling fundraising pages tell a story about why you are participating. Include photos, videos, and anything you can think of to show your passion and enthusiasm for the ride. Update your fundraising page and your social media accounts, with information about training, progress, or challenges so that your friends and family can stay engaged throughout your fundraising effort. Click here for a guide on how to maximize your personal fundraising page.

  4. Don’t be shy about asking.
In addition to sending out emails on your own or through your fundraising page, don’t forget to follow-up. Ask, ask, and ask again at every possible opportunity. Don't be shy about asking more than once. Your enthusiasm will be contagious!

  5. Inquire about matching gifts.
Ask your employer if your company offers matching gifts. And remind your friends and family to ask if their employers/companies offer matching gifts. Many matching gifts can take a couple of months for the donor company to process so start early. Matching gifts can increase your fundraising efforts enormously!

  6. Social Media, Social Media, Social Media
Use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or LinkedIn to update friends on your fundraising progress and provide a direct link to your fundraising page. Use these tools to encourage your friends and family to make a donation. Social media is a great way to stay in front of people without making a "hard ask."

  7. Host a Fundraising Event
Invite your team and guests to raise some money for your team by hosting a happy hour, partnering with a restaurant for food percentages, raffle, silent auction, etc.

  8. Get creative and make it fun!
    • Ask your boss if you can have a casual Friday, participants must donate $5.
    • Add the URL for your fundraising page to your email signature.
    • Go to your favorite store and ask if you can put a donation can on their counter.
    • Give out "piggy banks" and ask people to save their change (or allowance) for a few weeks.
    • Throw a Fundraising Happy Hour! Ask your local bar if you can set up drink specials and have donation cans set up around the bar.

Ride Safety Guide

The continued growth of our ride requires your help to make sure that all of our riders get to Atlantic City safely. In order to help us continue our long-standing safety record, please read and follow all of our safety tips below.

General Traffic Safety Information

VERY IMPORTANT: THIS IS NOT A CLOSED COURSE. You will be sharing the road with motor vehicles. The motoring public does not always share in your enthusiasms and efforts during the bike tour. Drivers may not know how to react to cyclists. Please be aware of vehicles around you.

Mother Nature and New Jersey road surfaces are not always friendly to us either - both of which we cannot control. We will continually monitor the road conditions and pressure the authorities to make appropriate repairs.

As you read on, refresh yourself with rules and laws of the roadway. Together we can make this a safe and fun ride.

Blind Spots
  • Most drivers do not expect to see a large amount of cyclists on the roadway.
  • Do not ride next to another vehicle unless you are in a different lane or passing.
  • Be cautious of bigger cars with mirrors that stick out further than expected. They have been known to strike cyclist.
  • If you can't see the mirrors on a bus, truck or car, then drivers cannot see you.

Communication & Signaling
  • Communicate well in advance.
  • Signal well before the intersection; make sure you are in proper lane position.
  • Use gestures in combination with verbal commands
    • LEFT TURN: Left arm straight out
    • RIGHT TURN: Right arm straight out
    • “ON YOUR LEFT”: Rider approaching your left side. Ride steadily and allow room to pass
    • “CAR BACK”: Car approaching from the rear
    • “GRAVEL/POTHOLE/SAND/TRACKS”: Combined with pointing, alerts other cyclists to hazardous road conditions
    • “SLOWING/STOPPING”: Cyclist is slowing or stopping. May be combined with turning palm of hand toward people riding behind.

Equipment
  • We will have roving support vehicles throughout the route to assist with bike problems.
  • It is still helpful to bring tools and parts to deal with mechanical failures, which can leave you stranded.
  • Water, food, sunscreen, and first aid all are suggested to be packed on your bike.

Groups
  • Say "stopping" if you have to brake hard in a group of cyclists, rather than using a hand signal.
  • Don't follow too closely. Drafting is extremely unsafe and is not permitted on the route.
  • Pull completely off the road or path if you have to stop.
  • Always ride single file.

Hazards
  • If a lane narrows ahead or is blocked by any motor vehicle, establish your position in traffic early.
  • Use extra caution when riding where glass and other trash accumulate on the roadway.
  • Grates and gutter pans should be avoided by positioning yourself away from them.
  • Pot holes are everywhere - always be on the lookout and alert others!

On the Road
  • THIS IS NOT A CLOSED COURSE. Please be aware of the cars on the road.
  • Make sure to ride in a single file. You are sharing the road with cars.
  • The same laws that apply to motorists apply to cyclists.
  • Obey all traffic control devices – especially the police officers and fireman assisting with traffic.
  • Always wear a properly fitting helmet. It not only keeps you safe, it is the law.
  • Alert other riders of upcoming road hazards. This can be done with pointing and saying the hazard you see, such as “gravel” “pothole” etc.
  • Give yourself ample room to maneuver in the event of an emergency.
  • Do not use your cell phone while riding.
  • The use of headphones is prohibited on the route.
  • Yield to all emergency vehicles. Move to the right to allow them to pass. Look and listen for lights and sirens.

Scan
  • Constant identification of potential hazards in front and behind as well as to each side.
  • Scanning allows you to avoid dangerous situations before they happen.
  • Scan for motorists, road conditions, pedestrians, animals, traffic signals.

Support Vehicles
  • If you are having difficulty finishing the ride, a support vehicle will take you and your bike to the next rest stop or to Atlantic City
  • Personal support vehicles are prohibited and will not be permitted to enter into any Rest Stop
  • All riders must be off the roads by 1:30pm. Support vehicles will pick up all remaining riders and take them to the finish line in Atlantic City.

Rest Stops
  • Utilize all rest stops.
  • Water, Gatorade, fruit and snacks will be provided at all rest stops.
  • For your safety, be sure to use the designated in and outs at each rest stop.
  • First aid, bike support and support vehicles will be available at all rest stops.
  • Please make sure to see one of our certified bike shops prior to the ride to receive your bike safety certification. If you have issues with your bike and do not have the bike inspection band, you will be seen after those with the band.  To learn more about this, please click here.

Ride on the Right
  • Always ride in the same direction as traffic. Never ride in the opposite lane of travel.
  • Keep as far right as safely possible.
  • Slower moving cyclists stay farthest to the right. Always pass on the left.
  • If you are overtaking a cycle – clearly announce your intentions. Make sure to say “on your left” loud enough for the other rider(s) to hear.
  • Ride in the right third of the lane if there is not sufficient room for lane sharing.

Ride Predictably
  • Ride in a straight, single file line.
  • Don't swerve in the road or between parked cars.
  • Check for traffic before entering a street or intersection.
  • Anticipate hazards and adjust your position accordingly.
  • Never cross into on coming traffic lanes.

Timing - Off the Road by 1:30pm
  • This rule is strictly enforced by the police departments in the municipalities we ride through.
  • Any riders still on the road at 1:30pm will be picked up by a support vehicle and driven to the finish line in Atlantic City.
  • If you feel you can’t make it, notify any support staff and you will be assisted.
  • Put your pride and ego aside - you did a great job getting as far as you did!

Traffic Signals, Signs & Police Officers - Obey! Obey! Obey!
  • Cyclists, just like motorists, must obey all traffic control devices – that means all traffic signals, stop and yield signs.
  • It takes longer to travel through an intersection on bike; plan to stop for yellow lights.
  • Avoid cars that run red lights by waiting for the signal to turn green and scan to make sure it's clear.
  • Follow the directions and instructions of all police officers and firemen directing traffic.

Weather
  • Be aware of possible changes in weather and pack accordingly.
  • Apply sunscreen before getting dressed to ensure you don't miss any areas.
  • Strong headwinds can severely slow your pace.

For any questions pertaining to the route, please contact Safety Director, Lt. Wayne Bonfiglio at 856-304-5364 or bike@FBBCF.org .

Training Tips and Plan

Whether you’re new to the event or Ride veteran, Tom Zapalac provides you with tips and a training plan in navigating a 65-mile bike ride experience.

Tom's Tips

So you have never ridden a bicycle from Philadelphia to Atlantic City…

Why would you?
For the 32nd Annual The Ben to The Shore Bike Tour benefitting the Families Behind the
Badge Children's Foundation. Whether you are brand new to cycling or a seasoned cyclist,
here is a training plan to make your experience more enjoyable.

30-Mile Option
If you are new to cycling or 65 miles may seem to be too much of a challenge, you may
want to consider riding the 30-mile option. You start at rest stop #2 in Hammonton, NJ and have
the same amount of time to complete the ride as the 30-mile option. All riders must be off
the road by 1:30pm so a shorter distance may be a great choice.

Finish Time
Training is important. All riders must be in Atlantic City by 1:30pm. That's 6 1/2 hours from
beginning to end. This is for your safety and the safety of our volunteers and the general
public. If you are still on the road, you will be picked up by one of our courteous SAG
vehicles who will happily take you to the finish. Plan your starting point based on your ability
to finish in under 6 1/2 hours. See "The Route" page on the left for our timing schedule

Tom's Training Tips

Safety First
Always wear a helmet while riding and make sure it fits. If you don’t know how to adjust the straps, go to your local bike shop for assistance. If you're buying a new helmet, it should have the proper fit before you leave the store. Do not wear headphones while riding. You need to see as well as hear everything around you.

What to put in your bike bag and on your bike
- 2 spare tubes
- ID
- Cash
- Tire tools and mini-tool kit
- 2 water bottles
- Air pump or CO2 cartridges
- Knowledge of how to use the tools to change a flat

Bicycle Safety
Make sure you have a bicycle that fits you properly and is in good working condition. Take it to a local bike shop for a quick tune up. Not only is this mandatory to participate in The Ben to The Shore Bike Tour, they may be able to make some adjustments which will make your ride more comfortable. Visit one of our certified bike shops to have this done for free, and some stores offer discounts on merchandise - cycling shorts with pads are a must!

Bicycle Fit
As you train you may need to make adjustments to your bike. Consider going back to your bike shop and ask about refining your bike position. You should not be stretched out or too cramped. Your legs should be slightly bent at the bottom of the pedal stroke. Stay relaxed. Hold the handlebar lightly. Keep elbows bent. Locked elbows lead to fatigue in your arms, shoulders, and neck. Smile. This will help you relax.

Nutrition for Training
Drink water or sports drink. Rule of thumb is to drink at least every 15 minutes. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. On hot days, you will want to drink more. On short training rides you probably will not need to eat during the ride. Eat a light meal an hour or two prior to riding. During your longer weekly ride, bring a light snack and eat halfway through the ride. Experiment with different drinks and snacks to find what works best for you. You don’t want to experiment the day of the ride.

Nutrition for Race Week
During this week drink plenty of water. No need to Carb Load. You get enough carbohydrates in regular balanced diet. Stay away from fatty or highly processed foods. Eat foods high in fiber and slow to digest. Vegetables, fruits, chicken, fish, and lean meats are ideal.

Morning of the Ride
Eat a light meal consisting of foods such as oatmeal, cream of wheat, fruits, juices, eggs or whole grain breads or bagels. Eat at least 2 hours before the start.

During the Ride
Drink at least every 15 minutes. There are four rest stops along the way. When you stop for a break, keep it short. 10 minutes at the most. The longer you wait, the more your muscles will begin to tighten. Refill water bottles, get a snack, stretch and get back on the road.

Tom's Training Plan

The main principle of training for a long ride is to increase your mileage gradually over a number of weeks. By doing it that way, you help avoid injury, burnout and fatigue. Plus, you will also be able to detect any issues with your body or bike that you want to discover before the big day.

For the first week: Start out by riding for 30 minutes at a time. Don’t worry so much about the miles. If you are not comfortable on streets, try riding on one of the many local paved trails. The idea is to increase the mileage of your long ride gradually until you can comfortably ride 50 miles in a day.

Midway through the training schedule: Start to increase the intensity and speed of your rides. Get your heart rate up. Ride hard for one minute, and then recover for the next. Do this several times during a ride. These are called intervals. Interval training will increase your endurance. If you have limited time to ride, interval training will build endurance without consuming a lot of time.

The final week: You will taper down. Ride 2-3 times. Slow your pace. Stay loose and do about 15 miles each ride. You’re not going to gain any more endurance this last week, but you don’t want to lose what you’ve learned over the past nine weeks. The ride is on Sunday, so rest and relax on Friday and Saturday.
