The Legacy and Impact of the 4Y5K

The 4Y5K: Community of Care Race is a beloved tradition at the University of Virginia, held annually on the morning of the last home football game. Established in memory of Leslie Baltz, a fourth-year UVA student who passed away in 1997, the event aims to create positive tradition where for students can come together and make lasting memories. The 4Y5K fosters community spirit, while offering opportunities to learn about safer strategies and become a part of our Community of Care.

In recent years, the event has taken on even greater significance. Following the tragic shooting in November 2022, which claimed the lives of three UVA football players—Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler, and D’Sean Perry—the race incorporated new elements to honor these students and embrace a "community of care." Hence, the 4Y5K: Community of Care was born, emphasizing not just individual safety but also collective well-being and support within the UVA community.

This year, the race will be held during Family Weekend, giving students the opportunity to share this meaningful UVA tradition with their families. We are excited to welcome parents, siblings, and loved ones to join us in honoring the spirit of care that the race represents.

Each year, the race directs its proceeds to meaningful causes. Traditionally, funds have supported the Leslie Baltz Art Study Fund, which assists students pursuing art history or studio art. This year, in addition to supporting the Baltz Fund, we are proud to announce that a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Tahirih Justice Center and the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA.

By participating in the 4Y5K, students and community members honor the memory of those we've lost while actively contributing to initiatives that promote safety, care, and well-being across the UVA community and beyond.

Who can participate?

We welcome participants of all ages - not just fourth-years! All UVA class years, families, faculty, staff, and Charlottesville community members are invited to walk/run the race. For youth participants, the University of Virginia expects parents or guardians to provide supervision over minors on University property during this event. Parents or guardians should not leave minors unsupervised on University property.

Comfort Colors short-sleeve t-shirt, chipped race bib, and access to free food and entertainment on race day!
