The Ultra & Distance Day

The Last One Standing Gauntlet

Survive 24 hours. Run 100 miles. The loop keeps growing.

The Official 'Last Standing' Event of the Autumn Harvest Trail Weekend

Start: 7:00 AM, October 9  |  Format: Escalating-distance last one standing. A new loop starts every hour, on the hour. Finish before the next bell or you're out. Every eight hours, the loop gets longer.

HoursLoopPace NeededOn the ClockTotal Miles
1 to 83.17 mi18:56 /mi7 AM to 3 PM, Sat25.36
9 to 164.17 mi14:23 /mi3 PM to 11 PM, Sat58.72
17 to 245.17 mi11:36 /mi11 PM Sat to 7 AM Sun100.08
25 onward5.17 mi11:36 /mi7 AM Sun onward+5.17 per hour

The first block is a steady trail hike. By the night shift, every loop is a race against the clock. Pace Needed is the pace to finish a loop in exactly 60 minutes; most runners will want a few minutes in hand to refuel before the next bell.

The Rules:

  • The bell: You must be in the start corral when the bell rings each hour.
  • Finish inside the hour: A loop finished after the next bell does not count.
  • Last One Standing: The winner is the final runner to complete a loop no one else completes. If the last runners all fail the same loop, there is no outright winner.
  • Assist: The runner who outlasts everyone but the winner earns the Assist.
  • Night gear: A headlamp and backup light are required from the 3:00 PM loop (Hour 9) onward.
  • Crew: Crew support in the start/finish area only. No pacers.

Run until you can't. Then run one more.

Important Race Format Note: The Last One Standing Gauntlet starts promptly at 7:00 AM. The race director may pause or end the race at any time for runner safety.

A last-standing race is won at the rest chair, not the starting line. Click here to subscribe to our free weekly newsletter, training plans, pacing strategy, and the mental playbook for the bell. Every Wednesday, straight to your inbox.

Looking for the Big Bastrop Backyard Ultra? The classic backyard is moving to its own date: New Year's Eve, December 31, 2027. Same format. One loop. One hour. Last runner standing wins. Click here for more details.

The Loblolly Redemption Mini Backyard Ultra

A Race Within a Race

The Loblolly Redemption

Mini Backyard Ultra • Lake Bastrop South Shore

"You died on the main course. Welcome to your second life."

The Loblolly Redemption is not a race you sign up for. It's a race you earn the hard way, by getting dropped from the main backyard ultra.

When you fail to complete your loop on the Autumn Harvest Last Standing main course, your race isn't over. It's different. Walk to the Loblolly basecamp, lace up, and start running the 5.1 km Loblolly Loop on the next hourly bell. Same format. Smaller loop. New field. Last person standing wins.

You can't register for the Redemption. You can only be sent there.

How It Works

The main event feeds the mini. The mini runs on the same clock.

You Get Dropped

You fail to complete a main backyard loop (6.706 km / 4.167 mi) before the hourly bell. Your main race is over.

You Walk to Loblolly

Report to the Loblolly Redemption basecamp. Check in with the Redemption timer. Participation is optional — you may also retire completely.

You Start at the Next Bell

When the next hourly bell sounds, you start the Loblolly Loop (5.1 km / 3.17 mi) alongside any other dropped runners. Same bell as the main course — one clock governs both races.

You Keep Going

Every hour, you run the Loblolly Loop. Fail to finish before the bell and you're out — for real this time. No mini-mini. No third chances.

Last One Standing Wins

The Loblolly Redemption ends when the main backyard ultra ends (up to 32 hours from the opening bell). The last dropped runner still completing Loblolly loops at that moment wins the Redemption.

Official Rules

Read every word. There are no third chances.

1. Eligibility

Only runners registered for the Autumn Harvest Last Standing main backyard ultra are eligible for The Loblolly Redemption. There is no separate registration. You enter the Redemption by being eliminated from the main event. No unregistered runners, spectators, pacers, or crew may participate.

2. Entry Trigger

A runner is eligible for the Redemption the moment they fail to complete a main backyard loop before the hourly bell, or voluntarily withdraw from the main event. The runner must verbally confirm entry with the Redemption timer at the Loblolly basecamp before the next bell.

3. Voluntary Participation

Entering the Redemption is optional. Dropped runners may choose to retire completely. However, once a runner starts their first Redemption loop, they are committed to the Redemption format and subject to its elimination rules.

4. Start Time

Redemption runners start each loop on the same hourly bell as the main backyard. There is one universal clock. A runner dropped from the main event at, say, the Hour 8 bell may begin their first Redemption loop at the Hour 9 bell.

5. The Loop

The Redemption loop is the Loblolly Loop via Swift Trail, approximately 5.1 km (3.17 miles), starting and finishing at the Loblolly basecamp. The course is marked and must be followed in its entirety. No shortcuts. No course modifications.

6. Elimination

A Redemption runner who fails to return to the Loblolly basecamp before the next hourly bell is eliminated. This elimination is final. There is no further consolation event.

7. Skipping Loops

Redemption runners may not skip loops. Once entered, a runner must start every subsequent loop at the bell. Failure to start is treated as failure to finish — elimination.

8. Event Termination

The Loblolly Redemption ends when the main Autumn Harvest Last Standing ends, either when a main event winner is declared, or when the 32-hour race cap is reached, whichever comes first. All Redemption loops in progress at termination are completed and counted.

9. Redemption Winner

The last Redemption runner still completing loops at the time of event termination wins The Loblolly Redemption. If more than one runner is still standing at the end of 32 hours, the fastest runner wins, determined by lowest cumulative Redemption loop time across all completed loops. Every second you bank on every loop matters.

10. Aid & Support

The Loblolly basecamp will have water and basic aid. Redemption runners may use their own crew and drop bags at the Loblolly basecamp. Main event aid stations on the Gideon loop are not available to Redemption runners.

11. Headlamps & Safety

Headlamps are required for any loop started between sunset and sunrise. All main event safety rules, medical protocols, and race director authority apply equally to the Redemption.

12. No Additional Fee

The Loblolly Redemption is included in main event registration at no additional cost. It is a feature of the Autumn Harvest Last Standing, not a separate event.

The Drama: Example Scenarios

Early dropouts grind volume. Late dropouts arrive battle-hardened. Who wins?

RunnerDropped atMain LoopsMain DistanceMax Redemption LoopsMax Redemption km
Runner AHour 4320.1 km28142.8 km
Runner BHour 121173.8 km20102.0 km
Runner CHour 2019127.4 km1261.2 km
Runner DHour 2827181.1 km420.4 km

The tension: Runner A had fresh legs but has been grinding Loblolly for 28 hours. Runner D just ran 181 km on the main course and shows up wrecked, but only needs to survive 4 loops. Runner B sits in the middle, balancing accumulated fatigue against available loops. Who breaks first?

The answer changes every hour as new runners enter the Redemption field. The competitive landscape is constantly shifting.

Awards

Four ways to earn recognition across both events.

🏆

Last Standing — Main

Winner of the Autumn Harvest Last Standing main backyard ultra.

🔥

Last Standing — Redemption

Last runner still completing Loblolly loops when the event ends. You got knocked down and kept going.

⚡

Iron Runner

Highest total combined distance across main loops + Redemption loops. The person who ran the most trail all day.

💥

Redemption King / Queen

Most Redemption loops completed, regardless of when dropped from the main event. Pure Loblolly volume.

Combined Distance Examples

Main loop (6.706 km) + Redemption loop (5.1 km) = total trail.

RunnerMain LoopsRedemption LoopsTotal Distance
Runner A (dropped hr 4)3 × 6.7 = 20.1 km28 × 5.1 = 142.8 km162.9 km
Runner B (dropped hr 12)11 × 6.7 = 73.8 km20 × 5.1 = 102.0 km175.8 km
Runner C (dropped hr 20)19 × 6.7 = 127.4 km12 × 5.1 = 61.2 km188.6 km
Runner D (dropped hr 28)27 × 6.7 = 181.1 km4 × 5.1 = 20.4 km201.5 km
Main Winner (32 hrs)31 × 6.7 = 207.9 km—207.9 km

Notice: Runner B or C could actually exceed the main winner's total distance by grinding Redemption laps. The Iron Runner award exists for exactly this reason, it's possible for a "loser" to cover more ground than the winner.

You Can't Sign Up for Redemption

Register for the Autumn Harvest Last Standing. If you make it all 32 hours, you'll never see Loblolly. If you don't, the Redemption is waiting.

Questions You'll Ask

Can I register for just the Redemption?

No. You must register for the main Autumn Harvest Last Standing. The Redemption only exists because the main event creates it.

Is there an additional fee?

No. The Redemption is included in your main event registration.

Do I have to enter the Redemption if I get dropped?

No. It's entirely optional. You can retire, eat tacos, and cheer from the sideline. But the loop will be there, calling you.

What if I get dropped from the main at Hour 30?

You can enter the Redemption at Hour 31. If the main event ends at Hour 32, you get at most 1–2 Redemption loops. That's the tradeoff, lasting longer in the main means fewer Redemption opportunities. Choose your suffering.

Can my crew help me on the Loblolly Loop?

Your crew can be at the Loblolly basecamp between loops. They cannot be on the course. Same rules as the main event.

What if the main event ends while I'm mid-loop?

You finish your current loop. It counts toward your total.

Has anyone ever done this before?

Not that we know of. You're the guinea pigs. Congratulations.

Last Rucker Standing

32 Hours · Loblolly Loop · 5.1 km per loop

"The runners carry nothing but miles. You carry the weight, and keep going anyway."

Beneath the Lost Pines, With a Ruck on Your Back

While trail runners chase glory on the main Last Standing course, a different kind of suffering takes place on the Loblolly Loop. Last Rucker Standing is a backyard-format rucking event held concurrently with the Autumn Harvest Last Standing ultra, same clock, same forest, different weight.

Every hour on the bell, you complete the 5.1 km Loblolly Loop with a weighted ruck on your back. Miss the bell, and your race is over. The last rucker still completing loops wins. Complete 20 loops and you've rucked 100 kilometers through the Lost Pines of Bastrop.

The Loblolly Loop

The Loblolly Loop winds through the Lost Pines of Bastrop, one of the most ecologically distinct forests in Texas, a survivor of wildfire and drought. At 5.1 km per loop, it rewards efficient movement and punishes complacency. Under a ruck, the roots and rollers become something else entirely.

The loop begins and ends at the Loblolly basecamp. All aid, drop bags, and crew access are at camp. You leave, you return, you do it again, or you don't.

Official Rules

Rule 1 · The Clock

Last Rucker Standing operates on the same universal clock as the Autumn Harvest Last Standing main event. The bell sounds at the top of every hour beginning at 7:00 AM Saturday. All ruckers must be back at the Loblolly basecamp and checked in before the next bell.

Rule 2 · Ruck Weight

Rucks must meet minimum weight requirements: 30 lbs for men, 20 lbs for women. Ruck weight is verified at check-in and subject to random spot checks during the event. The ruck must remain on your back for the entirety of each loop. You may not carry weight by hand or in a separate pack.

Rule 3 · Starting a Loop

Ruckers must be present at the Loblolly basecamp and depart on the bell. Late departure is not permitted. If you are not at the start line when the bell sounds, you are considered to have withdrawn from the event.

Rule 4 · Completing a Loop

To count a loop, you must return to the basecamp check-in point before the next bell. A loop not completed in time does not count and results in elimination. There is no grace period.

Rule 5 · Elimination

A rucker is eliminated when they fail to complete a loop before the bell, voluntarily withdraw, or are removed by a race official for safety reasons. Eliminated ruckers must check out with race staff before leaving the course.

Rule 6 · Winner Determination

The Last Rucker Standing is the final rucker to complete a loop when all other ruckers have been eliminated. To claim the title, the winner must complete one additional victory loop after the last competitor is eliminated.

Rule 7 · 32-Hour Cap

The event ends at the 32-hour mark regardless of how many ruckers remain. If more than one rucker survives to 32 hours, the winner is determined by lowest cumulative loop time across all completed loops. Every second on every loop counts.

Rule 8 · 100K Milestone

Any rucker who completes 20 loops (102 km) is recognized as a 100K Rucker Finisher regardless of final placement. This designation is awarded at the completion of loop 20 and stands even if the rucker continues and is later eliminated.

Rule 9 · Aid & Crew

Aid is available at the Loblolly basecamp only. Drop bags are permitted. Crew may access the basecamp but may not accompany ruckers on the loop. No outside assistance is permitted on the course.

Rule 10 · Race Officials

Race officials have final authority on all decisions including ruck weight disputes, loop timing, and safety-related withdrawals. Their decisions are not subject to appeal.

Awards

Last Rucker Standing

The final rucker still completing loops. Winner's ruck weight is commemorated on the award.

100K Rucker Finisher

Awarded to every rucker who completes 20 loops (102 km). Finisher recognition independent of placement.

FAQ

Can I add weight above the minimum?

Yes. Minimums are floors, not targets. Whatever you choose to carry, it stays on your back for every loop.

What kind of ruck is allowed?

Any standard rucksack with a frame or frameless design is permitted. Weighted vests do not qualify; the weight must be carried in a pack worn on the back. Race officials make final determinations on equipment disputes.

Can I run?

Yes. The format only requires you complete the loop before the bell. Pace is your choice.

Is this the same as the Loblolly Redemption?

No. The Loblolly Redemption is a consolation race for runners eliminated from the main Last Standing ultra; it cannot be registered for directly. Last Rucker Standing is a separate, directly-registered rucking category that runs concurrently on the same loop.

Do ruckers and Redemption runners share the loop at the same time?

Yes. The Loblolly Loop is wide enough for all participants. Ruckers, Redemption runners, and occasional main-event runners all share the trail under standard trail etiquette. Faster movers have the right of way.

What happens to my ruck during the rest window between loops?

You may set it down at basecamp between loops. The only requirement is that the ruck is on your back when you depart on the bell and remains on your back for the full loop.

What if I'm a last-standing runner who also wants to ruck?

You must register for one category. Last Rucker Standing and the main Last Standing ultra are separate events with separate registration.
