Big Beach Marathon, Half Marathon & Safari 5K

You are invited to join us for Big Beach Marathon in beautiful Gulf Shores, Alabama the weekend of January 30th & 31st, 2027.  The courses are scenic, flat, and FAST, running on the fully paved trails through the Gulf State Park. Our course is also a USATF Certified Boston Qualifier for those who are hoping to score a coveted Boston qualifying time (and potentially snag a spot at the world major).

The marathon and half marathon take place Sunday, with the start and finish located beach side at The Hangout. Enjoy stunning views of the Gulf Shores beaches, a gorgeous backdrop for your race weekend! And a celebration that brings runners back year after year.

In addition to Sunday's marathon and half marathon, the Safari 5K and Family Fun Run/Walk on Saturday provides an opportunity for those not up to the marathon or half marathon distances the ability to participate, as well as giving those looking for an added challenge, the opportunity for TWO days of racing in your weekend. Take on the Shark or Dolphin challenge by choosing to participate in the 5K on Saturday and the full marathon (Shark) or 5K Saturday and then half marathon on Sunday (Dolphin)! Challengers receive finishers medals from both races PLUS a third challenge medal, extra beer tickets, and the ultimate in bragging rights. 

All race participants are welcome to The Hangout after party on Sunday to celebrate! Participants will receive post-race food, beer, and a great time near the beautiful Gulf Shores beaches! We can’t wait to see you at Big Beach!

This untimed event is guaranteed to be FUN (MEDALS ARE NOT OFFERED FOR THIS EVENT). The distance comes in less than a mile and is perfect for all ages! The route is less than a mile along the 7K route.

Can I register on race day?

Race day registration is NOT available.  However, you can register online by Friday, January 23, 2026 @ 11:59PM EST (5K, Dolphin and Shark Challenge) and Saturday, January 24, 2026 @11:59PM EST (Half and Full Marathon).

What can expect on the course?

The Big Beach Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K take place in Gulf Shores, Alabama, known for its white-sand beaches and clear Gulf of Mexico waters. Boasting a flat and fast Boston Qualifier course, the marathon reveals beautiful scenery as it runs through the paved trail system of Gulf State Park.

Can I pick up my friend's packet early?

Yes, you can pick up friends, family and coworker's packets. Our only exception is if you are running the marathon (Boston Qualifier event), you must pick up your packet with a CURRENT photo identification (Driver's license, passport, etc.). 

Is the marathon course USATF Certified Boston Qualifier?

Yes, the marathon course IS USATF Certified. However, the half marathon is NOT USATF Certified.

Can I track a friend or family member during the race?

Yes! We are providing you with RaceJoy as part of the official race experience for the Big Beach Marathon, Half Marathon and Safari 5K. You'll be able to track and cheer them to the finish line all from your mobile device (apple or android).

Can I walk the event?

Yes, we love our walkers! All participants must meet the requirements of completing the half marathon in 3.5 hours or less, 7 hours or less for the marathon and 60 mins. for the 5K. If you cannot finish within time limits, we can't guarantee course support—which is paramount for your safety. Aid stations, medical support, portable toilets, and road closures will start to become unavailable to participants. The local police and race organizers will ask you to reroute to a shorter version of the course or move up onto the sidewalk where you will be required to obey regular traffic laws.

Things to do in the area with family and friends?

Adventure, fun, relaxation…you’ll find it all on Alabama’s white-sand beaches. For years, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach remained a little-known vacation treasure, but more and more families are discovering the 32 miles of soft sand and clear waters that lace the edges of Alabama’s southern border to the Gulf of Mexico. Are strollers, pets, bikes or skates allowed?

Strollers must start in the rear of the event and must be jogging strollers. We do not allow pets, bicycles, inline skates or any means of transportation other than running, walking or handcycles/wheelchairs.  Race Director reserves the right to reject any entry or to remove any participant from the race course.

How can I check to see if I am registered?

Can I bump up my registration to the full? Bump down my distance to the half or 5K?

What is your race day cancellation, deferral and refund policy?

In the event the race should be canceled for reasons beyond the control of the Race Director or Race Committee (inclement weather or unsafe weather conditions; local, state or national emergency), refunds will not be made, but race packets, including race shirts, will be available at a location to be determined. Refer to our Race Protection Policy HERE for more details. 

Marathon & Half Marathon Event

If you are staying within 1 mile of the start/finish of Sunday’s Half and Full Marathon, please consider walking. If you plan to drive if at all possible, carpool with your group of runners. 

Public Parking lots are available (off -season, therefore no fees) near start/finish line (101 E Beach Blvd, Gulf Shores, AL 36542). First come, first serve.

What is a pacer? And do I have to pay to run with a pacer?

The role of a pacer is to support you in reaching your goal finish time by keeping to their assigned pace. Pace Groups are FREE. 

What is a sweeper?

During the race, it's the sweeper's responsibility to stay at the back of the pack and make sure everyone running finishes or, if they drop out, they get back to the start safely. Obviously, this means running at a pace as slow or slower than the last runner, which can sometimes mean walking part of the course.

How do I know who the pacers are? How do I find the pacers?

Pacers available for the half and full marathon distances.  Pacers designated by an official pacer shirt and hold pacer flags indicating race pace/finish time. You can meet the pacers pre-race 30 minutes prior to the race or look for their signs at the start line.

What is the course limit?

You must complete the marathon distance in 7 hours (16min/mile). If you fall below this pace, we can unfortunately no longer guarantee course support—which is paramount for your safety. *For anyone missing the ceremony, you may pick up your award from the awards table at the main stage any time after the posted ceremony time. We will NOT mail out awards or have available after celebration.  CHECK YOUR RESULTS!

All participants and their guests are invited to the Party Palooza Sunday, January 25, 2026, at  The Hangout. 

At Junction 311, we love our community of runners and walkers and we value creating memorable race experiences for all.  Part of that experience is giving you peace of mind when you register, because we understand that life can throw you unexpected curve balls. We are proud to offer a few options if for some reason you are not able to participate in the event after registering. Please note, we do not offer refunds.

1. You may purchase RegShield, a registration protection option for event participants who can opt-in to purchase with one click during checkout. Participants will be reimbursed the cost of their registration price, should they be unable to attend their event due to several covered reasons including accident, illness and family emergency. You must purchase during registration and there is not an option to add this option after payment confirmation. If you selected the race insurance as a part of your registration that is offered by a third party, RegShield. You will get an email directly from RegShield regarding filing any claims.
2. You may defer your registration to participate with us in the same race the following year for a $10 change fee for any reason up to 72 hours prior to race day.  Click “manage registration” in your RunSignUp profile to choose this option or visit this link for step-by-step directions.
3. You may transfer your race registration to another individual. Click “manage registration” in your RunSignUp profile to choose this option or visit this link for step-by-step instructions.
4. You may switch to a shorter race distance within the same event.  Click “manage registration” in your RunSignUp profile to choose this option. You do not receive a credit or refund of any kind for choosing a lesser distance. Follow this link for step-by-step directions. If you would like to switch from a shorter race distance to a longer distance within the same event you must contact our customer service at info@junction311.com You will be responsible for any price difference.
5. In some cases, you may transfer your registration to another race within the Junction 311 portfolio of events.  This option is valid only if you contact us prior to 72 hours before the event. When transferring to a different race, the registrant will be credited for their original value of the current race registration.  We do not provide any refunds of race credit. *Race day pick up is reserved ONLY for those that have no other means to get their race items at early pick up is limited to only those participating in the 5K,  Shark or Dolphin Challenges.

Parking is FREE on-site, the $10 parking fee for visitors is waived for Big Beach Packet Pick Up Palooza attendees.

**Shark & Dolphin Challenger's that pick up their 5K bib at early pick up Friday will also receive their half/full marathon additional gear.

5K at Lake Shelby

Please note that Shelby Lake is located across the street from The Lodge at Gulf State Park.  There is some parking available there, however most participants will need to park in the overflow parking lot near The Lodge and then take the foot bridge over the road.

The red P in the image below indicates the overflow parking.

The blue line indicates the entrance to the foot bridge that takes you across the street.

Air Travel

If flying is your speed, we have several nearby options to get to the Gulf.

Beginning May 2025, Allegiant Air will connect travelers from six cities across the U.S. to Gulf Shores International Airport (GUF) with non-stop, roundtrip flights. Cincinnati (CVG) and St. Louis/Belleville (BLV) offer year-round flights while the other airports are offering seasonal flights operating through November. These routes provide frequent and convenient options for planning your beach getaway. FIND MORE INFORMATION HERE or direct at ALLEGIANT AIRLINES.

The next closest area airport is the Pensacola International Airport(http://www.flypensacola.com/) (located approximately 43 miles from Gulf Shores) which is serviced by all of the major airline carriers. From the airport it is easy to rent a car or hire a shuttle service.

Another option is the Mobile Regional Airport (http://www.mobairport.com). This airport is located approximately 62 miles from Gulf Shores.

Our beaches are in close proximity to two major interstates: I-10 and I-65.

Cities like Atlanta, Memphis, Nashville, Chicago and Houston are all within a day’s drive of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. And, we are just a few hours away from cities such as New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Birmingham and Jackson. Note: EV charging is available in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.

RideShare is a great option for overall travel but is to be avoided on race morning! There are not enough Ubers or Lyfts out that early in the am!

There is a beachside paved trail should you choose to walk from The Lodge to the start at the HangOut. The distance is roughly 2 miles.

  Hiccup is a reusable cup service. At the half marathon & marathon aid stations you will grab an 8 oz. silicone cup, as an alternative to single use cups. Instead of trashing those cups, you throw them in the bins provided at each hydration station. DO NOT keep the cups AND DO NOT throw them into Mother Nature 🌎
