About Big Brothers Big Sisters Miles for Mentorship 2026

We are excited to host our 6th Annual Miles for Mentorship event to support Big Brothers Big Sisters Michigan Capital Region’s mission to ignite the promise and power of youth! Miles for Mentorship is an outdoor, walk or run 5K. This year the event will be held at Hawk Island starting and ending at the Red Tail Shelter. Proceeds to this event help support the agency’s mission to create 1-to-1 mentoring relationships so that all youth achieve their full potential!  

Back again! children 12 years of age and under are invited to participate in our Spooky Sprint Kids Run! Halloween costumes are encouraged, and each participant will receive a treat bag and finisher medal at the finish line. The Spooky Sprint is free of charge!

The race will be professionally chip timed by the Michigan Running Foundation. Results will be posted during the race and online at the results tab, top of the page.

This 5k race is an out and back course that starts and ends at the Red Tail Shelter. The full race course can be found here.

Where do the proceeds go? Proceeds to this event help support the agency’s mission to create 1-to-1 mentoring relationships so that all youth achieve their full potential!  


Where do I park? There is plenty of parking at the race location Hawk Island Park, 1601 E Cavanaugh Rd, Lansing, MI US 48910 

Is there a Packet Pick Up? Packet pick up on race day begins at 8:30 am at the race start location. Packet pick up will also be available on Thursday, October 9th at Consumers Credit Union on South Cedar Street in Lansing. 

 

Can I pick up my family or friend’s Packet at Packet Pick Up?
Yes.

What are the T-shirt sizes?
Your entry fee includes a T-Shirt. Shirt sizes are not guaranteed after 9/22. Register early to be guaranteed a t-shirt! 

Are baby joggers and strollers allowed?
Yes. We do ask that you line up in the back at the start.

What is the course like? The course begins at the Red Tail Shelter at Hawk Island, it is an out and back course. Course Map can be found HERE.

Are Dogs Allowed?
No. For the safety of the participants and the dogs we ask that you not bring your dog.

Can I wear headphones? Sure, there's nothing like some good tunes while you run. We just ask that you can still hear and are aware of your surroundings.

This is my first 5k run/walk, what should I expect?  Congrats, we're excited to have you! We recommend arriving on race day morning about 1 hour prior to the start to park, get your shirt and bib #, and get warmed up. Wear the bib (your race number) on the outermost layer on your torso, we provide safety pins to pin it to your shirt. Pin in all four corners so the number doesn't flap when you're running/walking. Prior to the race the announcer will call everyone up to the start line. The speedy racers will line up at the front, everyone else lines up behind them. If you are running with a stroller we ask that you line up at the back.  The race will start and off you go! There are plenty of other participants and course support to guide you along the way.  Refreshments will be available after the finish. We'll text you your results, and we'll also have a QR code for you to scan to pull up your results. Lastly and most importantly HAVE FUN! You'll love the energy from the race!

 

Are there refunds? This event will be held rain or shine, there are no refunds for this event. As you can image there is a lot of planning that goes into an event and t-shirts, awards, refreshments, etc. all have to be ordered ahead of time. If the race is cancelled for any reason we will be unable to offer refunds, or if your plans change and you already signed up we are unable to offer refunds. 

Team Information

New this year we are offering awards for the Largest Social Team, The Most Spirited Team, and the Largest Fundraising Team (team that raises the most money).

You will be asked during registration if you'd like to Join or Create a team. If yes select Yes and follow the steps. This is for social teams only. If you'd like to also Join or Create a Fundraising team that step will be further along during the registration process.  They are two separate 'Teams' within Run Signup (Social just for fun to see how many people you can get on your team and Fundraising to see how much money you can raise). You can do both and have them the same name. 

Please note there is no special pricing for teams. If you register 3 or more people at the same time you can qualify for the Multi-Person/Family discount of $5 per person. The discount is automatically applied during checkout when you select multi-person pricing, first step of the registration process.

1st price increase:

 $30 from 03/01/26-06/30/26

2nd price increase: 

$35 from 07/01/26-09/20/26

Final price increase: 

$40 from 09/21/26-10/04/26

 

Family pricing: $5 discount per participant when registering 3 or more people at the same time. The discount is automatically applied during checkout when you select multi-person pricing.

  • Sunday, October 12th at Hawk Island Park beginning at 8:30am prior to the race.

Costumes

Halloween costumes are encouraged for both the Miles for Mentorship 5k and the kids Spooky Sprint, but are not required!

We ask that you please keep costumes family friendly as there will be young race participants in attendance. 

 

 

Race Shirts

Shirts will be guaranteed with paid registration by end of day 9/8, with sizes small thru 2XL available.  After 9/8,  shirts are available while supplies last. Register early to secure your shirt!

Shirts will not be mailed to Virtual Participants, please make arrangements to pick up at the office. We will contact you prior to the event with specific pickup days and times. 

 

Medals

Medals will be provided to all 5k finishers!

Team Recognition

The Largest Team, The Most Spirited Team, and the Largest Fundraising Teams will be recognized on our race website and social media platforms.  Teams will also receive additional swag following the race.
