The Bobby Doyle 5-Miler Road Race was created as a living memorial to our brother, father, coach, and friend, Bobby Doyle. Join us on Sunday, August 9th, 2026 in Narragansett, RI, for the 2026 event!

Location: Narragansett Pier Middle School, 235 South Pier Rd, Narragansett, RI
Start Time: 9:00am
Course: 5 Mile course is USATF-certified. All participants are chipped timed.
Race Features

☘️ Added for 2026: 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk (no medal)
☘️ $6,500 total prize purse (Open, 40+, 50+, 60+, 70+, 80+)
☘️ All registered runners will receive a technical t-shirt
☘️ Medals for the first 700 Finishers in the 5-Mile Race
☘️ All pre-registered runners are automatically entered for our Post-Race raffle, including $1,250 in gift cards to Rhode Runner
☘️ Beverages and snacks will be served after the race
☘️ Girls & Boys High School winners earn 1 free pair of shoes (must be current student)

About Bobby
☘️ Rhode Island’s Marathon King ☘️

Bobby Doyle began his legendary running career at Hope High School as a junior in 1966. Within five months he became the state’s premier high school distance runner. His achievements earned him an athletic scholarship to the University of Texas at El Paso. In his sophomore year, Bobby earned All-American honors as a member of the 1969 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship Team. After college he continued to race competitively , forming the Johnson & Wales A.C. with many of his closest friends.
Career Highlights:
☘️ Boston Marathon: 5th 1985, 7th 1979 (2:14:03), 12th 1978
☘️ Represented the USA at the 1979 Pan American Games in Puerto Rico
☘️ Seven time winner of the Ocean State Marathon
☘️ Competed in the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Marathon Trials
☘️ Won numerous marathons spanning three decades


Scholarships
Bobby Doyle Scholarships and Youth Running Fund
Proceeds from the race will support the Bobby Doyle Scholarships and Youth Running Fund, which are devoted to enhancing and supporting high school and youth running in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Scholarship Awards
Two $2,000 scholarships will be awarded to a male and female high school student based on athletic and academic performances, and two $1,000 scholarships for a male and female high school student who is a offspring of a police officer, firefighter or military. In addition, the Hollie Walton $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a minority student based on his/her academic and athletic achievements. Nearly $76,000 in scholarships has been awarded over the past 15 years!.
Beginning this year there will be a new scholarship awarded in honor of Coach Ted McLaughlin. Ted McLaughlin was a renowned coach who inspired many athletes over his years of coaching track and field, including Rhode Island All-State athletes Bobby Doyle and Hollie Walton. The Coach Ted McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship will be presented to a field event athlete. The annual scholarship will be for $1000.00.
