About
The Canal Run was started in 1975 and is the premier running event in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. Following the rolling hills along the Portage Lake Shipping Canal, the Canal Run offers four distances for runners and walkers of all levels, including a half marathon, 10-mile run, 10-mile walk, five-mile run, five-mile walk and two-mile fun run/walk.
Bob Olson founded the run in 1975. Olson was an avid runner and owned WMPL radio at the time. For several years he ran the event with his family and a couple volunteers. For his tireless effort to make the Canal Run a premier event, the race committee named the 10-mile run the 10-Mile Bob Olson Memorial Run and started a scholarship following his death in early 2018. The well ran race continued to grow, and after a few years, Olson contacted Ken Seaton, president of D&N Bank, which signed on to sponsor and support the event. With the support of D&N Bank, the race continued to grow. In the early 2000s, UP Health System-Portage (2007) and Finlandia University (2010) signed on to help the event. The race has had as many as 850 participants.
In 2009 the race was expanded to include a five-mile option, a half marathon was added in 2013 and in 2018 a two-mile fun run/walk was added. Each of the sponsoring organizations commits to having employees volunteer. It takes more than 150 volunteers to make this event possible.
The race is self-sustaining, bringing in enough money in registration fees and sponsorships to cover all the costs. Since 2011, the organizing committee has been able to donate $20,000 to area non-profit organizations as part of its Canal Run Gives Back program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Every year we hear from many participants with questions that range from pressing to minor, and we try to get ahead of it by having a digital Race Guide on our website that lays out all of the information we have. However, that’s not always enough. Below you’ll find our most frequently asked questions racers just need a quick answer to.
How much time do I need to get to my race start?
The general rule of thumb here is that plan on it taking 45 minutes to get from where the shuttles leave to your start. We encourage all racers to get out to their race start at least a half hour before start. Ideally a bit earlier. It makes life much easier for everyone involved, including volunteers and other racers, if people are at their start line early. Visit the Race Guide for more information on when the shuttles leave.
Pro Tip: Please do your best to not be on the last bus for your race.
Can I park at my race start?
No. There is no shuttle service after the race, so if you leave a car parked at your start line you will not have a ride back to it. It’s also important to note that there is not enough room at any of the start lines to park. We encourage racers to use the shuttle service instead of being dropped off at race starts, this limits traffic on the race course.
Can I bring a stroller/pet/bike?
Stroller: YES! All of our races are stroller friendly.
Pet/Bike: No. These items are not allowed.
Where is packet pick-up?
Our FRIDAY packet pickup is on the lawn of Quincy Green , which is located at 435 Quincy Street. It’s a great spot and has plenty of street parking available. Our SATURDAY packet pickup is at the Church of the Resurrection, which is located at 900 Quincy Street, 5 blocks from the finish line (also the Shuttle service location).
Can someone else pickup my packet?
Yes!
Can I still register for any of the races?
YES! Online registration is open until midnight Thursday, and you can register on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Quincy Green.
Do I need to preregister for the Kid’s Dash?
We encourage you to register prior to the event, but there will also be day of registration at the race start beginning at 10 a.m. Try to show up at least 15 minutes prior to the event.
Have a question that we didn't address here? Tweet us, send us a message on Facebook or Instagram, or email us at hello@canal.run. You can likely also find your answer on our Race Guide.

- The use of headphones is strongly discouraged for the safety of our participants, as the racecourse is not closed to traffic.
- Runners and walkers must stay on the left side of the road at all times, facing traffic.
- The Event Alert System (EAS) communicates the status of course conditions to participants leading up to and on race day. The levels range from Low (green) to Moderate (yellow) to High (red) to Extreme (black) based on a variety of factors, including weather conditions. All participants should familiarize themselves with the Event Alert System prior to the race, remain alert for directions from race officials and announcers and take precautions to prepare properly for varying weather conditions on race day. Website communication during race week will inform participants of the current Event Alert System status and provide preparation tips based on advance weather forecasts.
- Current Alert Level — Green, Good Conditions.
- On race day, the current Event Alert System status will be communicated via announcements and color-coded flags at the race starts and at Aid Stations along the course.
Road Closure
- Portions of M-203 will be closed from 8-11 a.m. from High Point Road to the blinking light on the corner of US-41.
- All racers should plan to take the shuttles to their race start.
- This is especially true for participants in the two- and five-mile events as the road will be closed for vehicles at their starting location. Racers who miss their events' last shuttle will not be able to get to the start because of the closure.
- Final Shuttle for five-mile start is 7:45 a.m.
- Final shuttle for two-mile start is 8:45 a.m.
- Participants who get dropped off at the half marathon and 10-mile starts will need to take the detour through Lake Annie Road on their way back.

Other Notes
- To eliminate congestion at the finish line, walkers are asked to come through the finish line single file.
- Those entering the walking events are not allowed to run and will be disqualified from the event if seen running. If you’d like to run an event but would like to walk some of it, please register for a running event.
- Walking the entire half marathon or 10-mile run will not be permitted.

Race to 1,000
One goal for the 2024 Canal Run is to push participation to over 1,000 racers. The marketing initiative, called “Race to 1,000” is a referral program where past Canal Run runners and walkers can refer first-time racers for a discount on their own race.
How It Works
- Anyone who registers for the 2024 Canal Run can refer new racers for a $5 discount. Get 2 new racers to sign up and get $10 off your race entry. In fact, runners and walkers can continue to get a $5 discount per registered new racer up to the total amount of their race! It cannot go over the cost of the race.
- A “new” racer is defined as somebody that has not done any Canal Run event in the past 10 years.
- Registered racers will receive a unique link on their registration confirmation page that can be shared to gain referral credits.
In addition to the discounts, any Canal Run runner or walker that refers five or more new racers will get a special edition Race to 1,000 water bottle. An exclusive item, not available anywhere else.
Road Closures
With safety in mind, most of Canal Run course will be closed for vehicles in 2025
Portions of M-203 will be closed from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025 during the Canal Run, which is celebrating 50 years this year. The closure will be from US-41 to High Point Road. Downtown Hancock on Quincy Street will also be closed as it normally is from the finish line (in front of Quincy Green) down to the start of M-203.
"Safety has always been our number one concern," Race Director Angela Luskin said. "This move will make the likeliness of an accident much smaller and should give our participants much more peace of mind as they move along our picturesque race course."
The biggest change for racers, in addition to the greater levels of safety, will be slight changes to the shuttles. All participants in the two-mile fun run/walk and five-mile events must take the shuttle to the race starts. The final shuttle for the five-mile race has been moved to 7:45 a.m. The final shuttle for the two-mile fun fun/walk remains at 8:45 a.m.
On race morning, a detour will in place that directs traffic down Lake Annie Road to get back to M-203. This change is in place to try and make the race as safe as possible for racers and volunteers. The Canal Run's organizing committee will reevaluate next year.
This change comes after many years of discussions and planning with local and statewide officials.
"We want to thank Michigan Department of Transportation, the City of Hancock, Hancock Township, Houghton County Sheriff's Office, Houghton County Road Commission, Michigan State Police and many others who provided guidance through this process," Luskin said. "The timing is great as it looks like we might have the biggest event in our 50-year history."
This year's Canal Run includes a half marathon, 10-mile walk, Bob Olson 10-mile run, five-mile walk, five-mile run, two-mile fun run/walk and Keweenaw Coop Kid's Dash. Registration is open now at www.canal.run. Volunteers are also still needed, with a full list of volunteer opportunities listed on the website.
Road Closure (new for 2025!)
- Portions of M-203 will be closed from 8-11 a.m. from High Point Road to the Finish Line in downtown Hancock.
- Shuttles leave from the Church of the Resurrection, 900 Quincy St. in Hancock
- Participants who get dropped off at the half marathon and 10-mile starts will need to take the detour through Lake Annie Road on their way back.
- This change is in place to try and make the race as safe as possible for racers and volunteers, the Canal Run's organizing committee will reevaluate the decision for next year.

Get Involved — Get Creative
The Canal Run hasn’t been successful by doing the same thing as everyone else. We’ve had chip timing longer than most other regional events have existed, our free high-resolution photo downloads have made the Canal Run a social media darling, and our signature t-shirts are collector items for thousands of people across the country. With that said, we’re always looking for ways to push further. We’d love to have your help to do that. Things like becoming a race name sponsor, offering a scholarship to get more racers in free or having an aid station named after you are all things we’d love to work with you to do. The ideas are endless, and we look forward to working with you to make the next great thing happen.

About Canal Run Volunteering
It takes more than 150 volunteers to make the Canal Run the great event it is. From the very start, this event has been run by some of the very best volunteers the Copper Country has to offer. Most of them have been doing it for many years and can tell you many stories of their time at the Canal Run.
Volunteer Opportunities
Why? Because they love the Canal Run. It’s a great event and one that the Keweenaw community is proud of. Are you ready to help us continue the Canal Run’s great tradition? Every year we need volunteers to help with registration, organizing the finishing chute, helping with timing, helping at the aid stations, leading and following the race, controlling traffic and setting up the course. Even if you’re participating in the event, we still need your help.
Oh yeah, have we mentioned that all volunteers get a FREE Canal Run t-shirt?
