Going the extra mile

The Trolley Run is the largest annual fundraiser event for Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired. As one of only five not for profit early childhood education centers in the country that serves children birth to school age who are blind or visually impaired, our organization ensures that kids reach their full potential regardless of their vision. After a diagnosis, caregivers are often told what their child will not be able to do, while CCVI shows them what their child can do. Since 1952, CCVI has provided a comprehensive program to 10,000+ students including specialized instruction, individualized therapy, and family education while fostering community awareness.

The average cost to educate a child at CCVI is $40,000 and all of our families receive financial assistance. When you choose to be a CCVI Trolley Run fundraiser, you make exceptional learning experiences possible for children with vision impairments. The education and services CCVI provides equips students and their families for elementary school and the world beyond.

Safety Measures

We are monitoring the current COVID-19 situation closely and are working with the City of Kansas City to host an event with Kansas City’s public health and safety guidance. Should their guidance result in necessary changes to the event, we will be in contact with all participants. Please see our cancellation policy.

Please see some of the safety measures we will have in place for the event, and check back often as guidelines are subject to change.

2023 TROLLEY RUN SAFETY MEASURES:

Assigned Wave Starts: We will be using a staggered wave start to ensure safe and proper spacing at the start line, and on the course. Participants will be assigned a wave start times based on pace selected during registration with the faster runners going first, followed by the slower runners then walkers. Please pay attention to race week communication, as this is when your start time will officially be scheduled. This will result in extremely low course density allowing runners plenty of space in the corrals and on the course. In the starting corral, participants will position themselves at markings, measured six feet for social distancing and will be released in small groups.

Bag Check: In an effort to limit contact points for the event and combat the spread of COVID-19, there will not be a bag check at this year's event.

Registration Transfer: Participants have the ability to change their in-person registration to a virtual registration in the event that you have been exposed to, or tested positive for COVID-19.

The Cause

For over 70 years, the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired has been preparing blind and visually impaired children for success in the sighted world. Trolley Run is the largest annual fundraiser for CCVI. All funds raised from the race go toward critical programming at the center. Donations from the Trolley Run are critical to our success.

OUR MISSION

To prepare children with visual impairments, including those with multiple disabilities, to reach their highest potential in the sighted world.

Did You Know?

More than 85 percent of what a child learns before the age of five is through vision and incidental learning. Vision provides the motivation to explore one’s environment and to understand one’s position in space, and it is an important avenue of sensation for the acquisition of speech and language.

Who We Run For

Since 1952, the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired has provided comprehensive programming for blind and visually impaired children, including those with multiple disabilities - from birth through school age - with highly-specialized instruction, therapies, and family education.

CCVI serves over 300 children annually from ages birth until 21. Our Early Intervention Program, Early Learning Academy, and Mobile Outreach Vision Education (MOVE) Program provide children in our community a customized, innovative, and stimulating learning environment led by specialized teachers and therapists.

From the Kansas-Colorado border all the way to Cape Girardeau in Missouri, CCVI finds ways to reach kids in our community who are underserved and need high quality vision services. 50% of all children at CCVI live at or below the poverty line, which means that your support is crucial to ensure that CCVI remains a resource in the region.

What is the CCVI Trolley Run?

It's Great to Lace Up with You!

Kansas City's most inspiring race will be held on April 28, 2024. Trolley Run is the largest fundraiser for Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired (CCVI). All money raised from the race supports educational or therapeutic services for kids with vision impairment, including those with multiple disabilities.

Each year, thousands of runners take to the streets of Waldo, Brookside, and the Country Club Plaza for a 4-mile route full of fun! Some of us go for gold finishing the race in under 18 minutes(!) and some of us take our time, stop for pictures with friends and stroll down the beautiful boulevards. It doesn't matter if you're fast or finish last. When you join the race, you're already on the winning team.

One of Kansas City's Most Inclusive Parties

We're about bringing the community together for an amazing cause-- no experience or athletic ability required. Since the CCVI Trolley Run is owned and operated by Children's Center for the Visually Impaired, our priority is ensuring all feel welcome, regardless of ability, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, or gender.

History of the Race

Now in its 36th year, the idea for this fundraiser was presented to the Friends of CCVI by the former Michael Forbes Restaurants, Inc., which owned two restaurants, four miles apart in the heart of Kansas City and The Plaza shopping area. The four-mile course follows the old streetcar/trolley tracks and hence, the name, Trolley Run. Trolley Run is the largest annual fundraiser for CCVI and provides critical funding to support the specialized education and individualized therapies children receive every year. Trolley Run has succeeded through the generous support of our individual and corporate sponsors, including former title sponsor Sabates Eye Centers, NASB, and many others.

The CCVI Trolley Run is one of Kansas City's oldest and largest runs and was the first major run in Kansas City to use chip technology for race results.
