Race Intro

Welcome to the 29th running of the Dawn To Dusk To Dawn Track Ultras!  For the most part, the object of the race is to cover as many miles as possible during the 24 Hour period starting at 7:00AM May 9th and ending 7:00AM May 10th.

Originally Co-Founded by Bob Huggins and Bill Schultz, the event started as a 12Hr race in 1984 as the Dawn To Dusk Ultras. It ran consecutively until 2001. During that time, the race grew in interest and changed to a 24Hr from 1986 to 1995. Over those years, the race included shorter events - 50K, 50M, 100K, and 12Hr.

As more runners started running in the woods on trails, interest in track ultras waned and the race reverted back to its original 12Hr format from 1996 to 2001.  At that time, after 18 years, it was decided to let the race fade away.

By 2013, interest in 24Hr and longer event seemed to be returning, and it was decided by new Co-Directors Josh Irvan and Bill Schultz to bring the race back - this time, as the Dawn To Dusk To Dawn Track Ultras.

There are three events this year.  The shortest is the 50K. It starts at 9:00AM Saturday and ends when the Runner completes the distance - 125 laps on the 400m track. The Men's Course Record is 3:31:17 held by Josh Finger in 2017.   In 2022, Melissa Tanner not only broke Pam Smith's CR of 4:12:15 that was her split in the 2016 24Hr, she broke Josh FInger's Overall Course Record running a 3:28:46! Melissa's time also set a new American Women’s 50K 40-44 Record!

The 12Hr starts at 7:00PM Saturday and ends at 7:00AM Sunday. The CR is held by Pam Smith with 88.23 miles. Again, it was her split from the 24Hr.  For the Men, Rich Riopel put up 85.89 miles in 2019. Like Pam, Rich’s 12Hr was his split in 24Hrs.

As mentioned, the 24Hr starts at 7:00AM Saturday and ends 7:00AM Sunday. Should be no real surprises as to who holds the CRs. Overall, Rich Riopel ran 161.82 in 2019 and Pam Smith ran 143.66 in 2016.

Virtual 50K Rules and Results

How To Report Your Results For The D3 Virtual 50K:

Since this is an officially unofficial event, here are the officially unofficial ways you can report your results for the D3 50K Solo Challenge.

The event begins at Friday May 9 at 7:00 PM and ends Sunday, May 11 at 7:00 AM.  These are officially unofficial start and finish times – if you’re a few minutes (or even a couple of hours) early or late, no harm no foul.  If you try and start on Wednesday May 8 and finish Thursday 16, then those results won’t be posted.

You have 36 hours to cover the 31 miles as you wish, and it’s a go-as-you-please event, meaning you can start, stop, run, walk, as many times as you wish during the 48 hours.  You’ll get D3 swag, an awesome face mask, for participating in the 50K.  The officially unofficial 36-time period is pretty firm – please don’t fudge this!  You’re only cheating yourself if you do.

Report your results as follows – upload your results directly through this RunSignUp page by clicking the 'Submit Virtual Results' on the Result page of this site, post any documentation you have to the D3 Facebook page, or email the race timer Mike Melton at mike@mcmelton.com, or use the ‘Contact Us’ button on the D3 RunSignUp race entry page.  All of those methods are acceptable, although it would help if you tag Mike Melton in your Facebook post so he gets notification of your post.

What documentation is acceptable?  A photo of your GPS watch, a link to your online account such as Strava, a link to some course such as MapMyRun, a letter from your Mom, a pinkie promise that you did it, just give us anything you have.  It’s all officially unofficial anyways!

Remember to have fun!  That’s what it’s all about!
