About End of the Road Half Marathon & One Tunnel 4 Miler
End of the Road Half Marathon (October 24–25, 2026 · Waterfall, PA) is one of Pennsylvania’s most unique fall races. Choose the Half Marathon or 4 miler and run through two long, dark tunnels on the abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike, surrounded by peak autumn foliage.
Looking for an October race that’s unlike anything else in the state? This event takes runners deep into history along a stretch of highway bypassed in 1968 and untouched by cars for nearly 50 years. The course blends five miles of tunnel running with rolling rural roads and stunning mountain scenery.
Not ready for 13.1 miles? If you’ve run a 5K before, the 4 Miler is the perfect next step. It’s approachable for newer runners, fun for walkers, and still gives you the full thrill of racing through the famous abandoned tunnels. Curious what it's like to run through the tunnels? Watch our End of the Road Half Marathon & 4 Mile preview video with footage from 2024 participant, Natasha.
Race Options:
- Half Marathon – Saturday or Sunday (choose your day)
- One Tunnel 4 Mile – Sunday
- Two-Day Challenges:

- Official pacers for both Half Marathons to help you hit your time goals
- Movie Night on the Turnpike Saturday evening (The Addams Family in 2025)
- Host hotel near the start/finish that hosts packet pickup (book early—sold out last year)
Now in its eighteenth year, this race has welcomed runners from across the U.S., raising funds for The Old PA Pike’s efforts to turn the abandoned turnpike into a permanent greenway for runners, walkers, and cyclists.
Be part of one of Pennsylvania’s most talked-about October races—and one of the most memorable courses you’ll ever run.

Club Race Day Benefits
Club Benefits TBD for 2026.
If your team has 12+ same day participants* registered two weeks prior to race day, you’ll enjoy:
- A team tent set up by Trivium, featuring a banner with your club's name/logo
- Your registration packets, ready at the tent (skip packet pickup lines)
- Dedicated club porta potties!
- Food, drinks, and goodies waiting for your team.
Check the Groups/Teams tab and see how many people your team currently has registered! Questions about Club Benefits? Reach out to Megan at megan@triviumracing.com.

*"Same Day Participants" means all 12 participants are racing on either Saturday or Sunday, not divided between the two days. If you have 12 people each day you get the club benefits both days!
Course Details
We don't have the course available on Strava. A GPS watch won't stay accurately connected to satellites in the tunnels and will give inaccurate estimates of elevation changes and distance. The Athlete Guide has very detailed course descriptions for both the Half Marathon and 4 Mile, including:
- Step by step descriptions of elevation changes
- Elevation chart
- Descriptions of the tunnels and views
- Course marking signs
- Aid Station Chart
The course has rolling hills, but nothing steep or intimidating. On the way out, many runners say it feels almost flat until they notice they’ve been gradually climbing. The rises are gentle and blend into the terrain, so you’re never facing anything that feels dramatic. The bonus: the return trip has more downhill, and that’s when you really see how subtle the climb was on the way out.
For both distances, expect occasional broken or uneven pavement, especially inside the dark tunnels where visibility is lower. We clean the tunnels thoroughly before race day, but we encourage all participants to stay alert and watch their footing.
Check out this course preview video from past participant Natasha for a peek at the tunnels and turnpike!

Courses & Distances
What is the Half Marathon course like?
The Half Marathon course is an out-and-back on the old Pennsylvania Turnpike, including two tunnels. With mild hills, it's relatively fast and unlike anywhere else you’ve raced. A headlamp is required; there are no lights in the tunnels. Watch our End of the Road Half Marathon & 4 Mile preview video.
What is the One Tunnel 4 Miler like?
The 4 Miler is a shorter out-and-back that takes you through one of the iconic tunnels. If you’ve run 5Ks before, the One Tunnel 4 Miler is your next step—it’s approachable, fun, and gives you the full End of the Road experience without committing to a Half. Again, a headlamp is required.
For both distances, expect occasional broken or uneven pavement, especially inside the dark tunnels where visibility is lower. We clean the tunnels thoroughly before race day, but we encourage all participants to stay alert and watch their footing.
Can I walk the 4 Miler?
Yes! With more than four hours on the course, you can walk comfortably and still finish.
Are strollers, dogs, or headphones allowed?
- Strollers are allowed with the caveat that they should be offroad-capable strollers. This is not a smooth paved-path race.
- Dogs are welcome to join the fun—as long as they’re on a leash and well-behaved. We love seeing furry friends on the course and at the finish, but please keep in mind that not everyone is comfortable around dogs. A little extra courtesy goes a long way toward making sure everyone has a great race weekend.
- Headphones are allowed, but please keep the volume low and stay alert to volunteers and other runners.
Will the course be marked?
Yes—mileage will be clearly marked and volunteers will guide you. You can view course markings in the Athlete Guide.
Are there Aid Stations?
Yes! Check the Athlete Guide for a full Aid Station chart and AS locations. Aid Stations will have water, Tailwind, Huma gels, and candy, depending. All of the Aid Stations are located outside of tunnels.
Where are the Porta Potties?
Bathroom Locations:
- Start/Finish Line
- West of Sidling Hill Tunnel
- East of Rays Hill Tunnel
All porta potties are located OUTSIDE of the tunnels.
Tunnel Temperature
The temperature can be as much as 20 degrees warmer in the tunnels compared with the above ground miles. The secret? Good layers and venting! If the morning is chilly, consider:
- A wind breaker or vest that keeps you warm above ground that you can unzip when in the tunnels
- A hat or ear band you can take off when in the tunnels
- Arm warmers you can roll down in the tunnels
- A neck gaiter you can pull up or down
Two-Day Challenges
What are the Two-Day Challenges?
We’ve created two challenge options for athletes who want to experience both days of racing:
- 26.2 Road Closed Rambler Challenge
Run the Half Marathon on Saturday and the Half Marathon on Sunday for a total of 26.2 miles. - 17.1 Tunnel Traveler Challenge
Run the Half Marathon on Saturday and the One Tunnel 4 Miler on Sunday.
Do both races have to be run, or can I walk?
You can run or walk, as long as you finish within the course cutoff times.
Swag & Awards
What do I get with my registration?
- Custom race shirt
- Finisher medal (Half Marathon and 4 Miler)
- Live results and timing
- Race-day photos
- Post-race food and drink
- Half Marathon pacers
- Two-Day Challenge participants receive bonus swag as well.
Are there age-group awards?
Yes! Top 3 overall (male, female, non-binary) plus age group awards will be recognized in the Half Marathon. The 4 Miler will award top 3 overall male and female finishers plus age group awards. There will be separate awards for the Saturday and Sunday Half Marathons.
Movie Night on the Turnpike
What is Movie Night?
On Saturday evening, we’ll host Movie Night on the Turnpike at the start/finish area. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy a movie projected under the stars.
Do I need a ticket?
Yes—tickets are $10 for adults and free for kids 16 & under. They include snacks and are limited to the first 100 people. You can purchase tickets during registration or later through your RunSignup account. Just follow these instructions to add the item or update your add on options.
Volunteers & Spectators
Can I volunteer?
Absolutely! We rely on amazing volunteers to help with packet pickup, aid stations, and finish line support. Volunteers can choose from a free race shirt, free future Trivium race entry, or donation to a group. We love volunteer costumes! Sign up on our Volunteer page.
Can friends and family spectate?
Yes! The start/finish area is spectator-friendly, as is the turn around point. You could also spectate at entry points from the road that parallels the course.
To access the turn around point navigate to this pin: https://maps.app.goo.gl/A8btve7hMGt5GXC37. It's very close to the host hotel at 16503 Lincoln Hwy, Breezewood, PA 15533. The trailhead parking lot is an island between Tannery Road (T441) and Lincoln Hwy (30). You can park and walk or bike to the course. It's about a mile to the race turnaround point.
Travel & Lodging
Where should I stay?
We’ve partnered with the Holiday Inn Express in Breezewood for a discount. This is also where we host early packet pickup on Friday night. See our Lodging page for recommendations.
How far is the race from major cities?
Harrisburg, PA: ~1 hour 20 minutes
Pittsburgh, PA: ~2.5 hours
Washington, DC: ~2 hours 15 minutes
Philadelphia, PA: ~3 hours
Safety & Other Policies
What happens if it rains?
The race is rain or shine. Please dress appropriately for the weather and remember the temperature is typically warmer in the tunnels. Don't ditch your jacket in the tunnel; you'll be chilly when you emerge back into the turnpike.
Are headlamps required?
Yes—tunnels are completely dark. All runners/walkers must carry a headlamp or flashlight.
Is the race USATF certified?
The Half Marathon course is not USATF certified, but it is accurately measured and chip timed.
Half Marathon Pacers
Saturday and Sunday Half Marathon Pacers will be provided by Beast Pacing. The pacers will help you achieve your race day timing goal. They will be wearing a custom pace shirt and will be carrying pace signs. Find your pace goal sign when lining up for the start and stay with the pacer to meet your time goal. Is the One Tunnel 4 Miler Right for You?
Why the One Tunnel 4 Miler Is the Perfect Step After a 5K
If you’ve run a 5K before, you may already be thinking about your next challenge. That’s where the One Tunnel 4 Miler at End of the Road Half Marathon & One Tunnel 4 Miler comes in. It’s approachable, fun, and gives you the full End of the Road race-day experience—without committing to a Half Marathon.
Why Step Up from a 5K?
Moving from a 5K (3.1 miles) to a 4 Miler is the perfect next step. You’ll add less than a mile to your distance, but that extra stretch helps you grow as a runner. It’s enough to feel like a true challenge while still being achievable—even if your training has mostly been focused on 5Ks.
Many runners find that racing four miles makes them feel stronger and more confident. It’s a chance to push just a little farther, test your endurance, and earn some well-deserved bragging rights. It's also a great intermediate step between the 5K and 10K (6.2 Miles).
An Approachable Distance for New Runners
Not ready for a 10K or Half Marathon? The 4 Miler is a fantastic way to be part of race weekend. With a generous course time of 8:20 AM to 12:30 PM (4 hours, 10 minutes), you could even walk the entire distance and still finish comfortably. It’s a race anyone can tackle—whether you’re a first-timer looking to cross the finish line or a walker soaking in the atmosphere.
The Full End of the Road Experience
The One Tunnel 4 Miler isn’t just about the distance—it’s about the setting. You’ll run or walk through an abandoned stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, complete with 2.4 miles in a spooky tunnel that makes this race unlike anything else in the region. You’ll experience the same race-day excitement, post-race celebration, and unique vibe as the Half Marathon athletes—just in a distance that’s more approachable. Want to check out the 4 Mile (and Half Marathon) course ahead of time? Check out this video with race footage from 2024 participant, Natasha!
Training for the 4 Miler
The best part? You don’t need to overhaul your routine to get ready. If you’ve been running or walking a few times a week, you’re already on track.
For a little extra structure, you can follow a Hal Higdon training plan:
- Newer runners can start with a Hal Higdon 5K plan and slightly extend their weekly long run to reach 3.5-4 miles. There are beginner to experienced plans and even a plan specifically for walkers!
- More experienced runners can look at an 8K plan, which builds endurance a bit further and makes 4 miles feel like a strong, fun effort.
With 6-8 weeks of consistent running or walking, nearly anyone can go from finishing a 5K to confidently taking on the One Tunnel 4 Miler.
Why the 4 Miler Might Be Your Perfect Fit
- You’ve run a 5K and are ready for a small step up
- You want a race that’s fun and unique, not intimidating
- You’d love to run or walk through a tunnel for the experience
- You’re looking for a fall race with big energy and small-town charm
The One Tunnel 4 Miler gives you all of that and more. Ready to take the next step? Register today for the One Tunnel 4 Miler and see why it’s the perfect bridge between the 5K and longer races.
Light Recommendations

The Half Marathon course takes you through 5 miles of tunnels and the 4 Mile course takes you through 2.4 miles of tunnel. You’ll need a light source.
Thank you to all current and past participants who sent us your favorite lights for running through the tunnels! This list is divided by non-headlamps, headlamps, and additional tips noted at the end.
Non-Headlamps
for those looking for alternative options
Noxgear safety vest with Noxgear’s Tracer Lamp: Light your path and boost your visibility with the new Noxgear Tracer Lamp! A 500 lumen rechargeable LED light that securely attaches to the buckle of any Tracer. Noxgear was recommended by numerous End of the Road participants and it’s *End of the Road Race Ambassador Recommended*
Volcano Eye Light Harness, Running Light for Runners: "I use the volcano eye. It's across the body, with a red light in the back and an adjustable bright white light in the front. Plus it's rechargeable. I like it being across body because it's hands free, and I've found it annoying running with a headlamp (plus I had a cheap headlamp my first year which all but died through the last tunnel.... which, did actually make me run faster LOL). Can be purchased on Amazon for under $30" *Recommended by 3-time End of the Road participant*
Clip on Running Lights: “Clip on running light :) compact-magnetic- and bright!!!” is how an End of the Road participant describes these clip on lights from Amazon!
Ultra Bright Mini Hands Free Cree LED Clip on Cap Light: This option is $12 on Amazon and clips onto a running hat.
Lumen 200 waist light: This 200 lumen waist-mounted light casts shadows across uneven surfaces giving you a clearer understanding of your terrain. The belt’s conical shape provides comfort and stability, and its quick release SR buckle is secure and easy to use.
Lumen 600 4.0 waist light: Another wait light option from Ultraspire!
AVANTO Triple Beam Chest Light, Original, 500 Lumen Outdoors LED Night Running Lights for Runners: “I run a lot in the mornings. Headlamps just blind other runners… so I started running with a chest light. Plus it has a flasher on the back too!” is how one End of the Road participant explains a preference for this chest light offered on Amazon.
RABOW USB Rechargeable Illuminated & Reflective Vest for Running: Another vest option offered through Amazon.
Knuckle Lights: “I used Knuckle Lights I prefer to be able to have more control over where the light is going and you dont blind the runners coming in the other direction, you can point them down to the ground to see your footing better as well.” - End of the Road participant
“I have used Knuckle Lights in most past events I have participated in- they are very bright with a very wide cone. They are easy to turn on/ off at the thumb, they are lightweight/ comfortable and don’t really feel like you have anything on your hands. They can easily be left on and still have that hands free feeling, but I like that they can tuck nicely in a pocket when not in the tunnels so I don’t have to have them on my hand for the entire race if I don’t want to.” - End of the Road participant
Nathan Zephyr Running Flashlight: “I have used a Nathan Zephyr Fire rechargeable hand held for several years! It’s lightweight, has a comfortable hand strap and holds a charge for quite a long time. I use it all the time as a flashlight, not just for running. And this one has an emergency beeping sound that actually deterred an aggressive dog once” - End of the Road participant
RunLites Gloves: These are gloves with built in lights!
FomaTrade Super Bright Wrist LED Light Rechargeable Waterproof LED Flashlight Wristlight: “I’ve used this one for a few years now. Love it.” - End of the Road participant
Headlamps:
Lumen 300 sidekick headlamp: This light features a zooming lens allowing you to toggle between spot or flood at outputs of 300, 105, and 62 lumens.
Petzl headlamps: This brand has a great reputation and was recommended by multiple participants. It is also our *End of the Road marketing team pick!* Check out the ACTIK or TIKKA Core.
“I also have the Petzl tikka headlamp. Extremely bright and comfortable to wear even for long distances. I prefer it with a hat, but have never had a problem wearing it without a hat either- I’m just not a person that likes things on my head that often but it would be my number one rec if you don’t want anything in/on your hands” - End of the Road participant
Rechargeable LED Headlamp,COB230° Wide Beam: This rechargeable headlamp is just $12 on Amazon or you can choose a multipack for backup lamps.
Curtsod Headlamp Rechargeable, 2-Pack 1200 Lumen Super Bright with White Red LED Head Lamp Flashlight: This rechargeable headlamp is being used by a few of your fellow End of the Road runners.
Black Diamond Sprinter 500: The Sprinter 500 is purpose-built to handle everything from early morning urban runs to all night mountain running adventures. Ultra-thin and well balanced, the Sprinter 500 features nearly twice the lumen output of previous versions, emitting 500 lumens on the light’s brightest setting.
Black Diamond Storm 500-R: For a technical consumer who expects all-around performance and features out of their headlamp but still values a small size and compact package. This user has access to a power source and values the ability to go out on their mission with a fully charged battery.
Princeton Tec headlamp: A few End of the Road participants highly recommend these Princeton Tec headlamps!
Energizer Headlamps: Energizer offers multiple headlamp options and they are sold on Amazon, Walmart, Target, and other convenient stores.
GearLight 2Pack LED Headlamp: This headlamp has a runtime of up to 10+ hours on the low setting.

Additional Tips:
“I also carry a small flashlight as a back up in case the headlamp stops working mid-tunnel.” - End of the Road participant
Another backup option to carry in case your primary light stops working: “I used my iPhone flashlight. I thought it was pretty lit with all the runners in the tunnel even when on my way back with less people.” - End of the Road participant
