Aid Stations

There will be three aid stations on the course: Mile 2.3, Mile 5, and Mile 7.6. 

All Aid Stations will have water. There will be additional food and beverages at the Finish such as oranges, cookies, bread items, and more.

This is not a cup-less race though runners are encouraged to bring their own bottles/drinking vessels to help us reduce our impact on the environment. No littering will be tolerated on the course. The race director has the right to disqualify a participant if they are caught littering on the course. 

Awards

All finishers will receive a custom special edition Finishers Medal. 

Participants will be eligible for Overall, Masters (40+), and Age Group awards. Awards ceremony will occur in the Finish Zone area towards the end of the race (approximately 10:30am).

Where Can We Pick Up Our Bib/Shirt/Packets? Early Packet Pickup will be held on Friday June 6th from 2:00pm to 6:00pm at Jus' Running. Race day packet pickup will begin at 6:30am at the Start/Finish area. Runners are highly encouraged to pick up their packets on the Friday before the race.

Will there be Porta-Johns? There will be Porta-Johns at the Start/Finish area.

Is The Race Chip Timed?: Yes, the Flying Squirrel Ten Miler is chip timed by Right On Time Productions using the state-of-the-art Mylaps Bibtag chip timing system.

Are There Refunds or Deferrals? There will be no refunds due to weather, emergencies, pandemics, sickness, etc. No deferrals at this time either. We do allow for bib transfers. 

What Is The Typical Weather in Asheville in Early June? Be prepared for warm and humid conditions. The average temperatures in early June are about 78°F and 58°F, though keep in mind that our race begins at 8:00am which is often the cooler. The average relative humidity in June in Asheville is 75%, which is quite high. The majority of our course is shaded which should provide a reprieve from the sun. 

Best Local Running Store To Grab Gels/Gus/Gear In Asheville? Jus' Running is our favorite local running store and is located just about 1.5 miles from the Start/Finish. They are located at 523 Merrimon Ave, Asheville, NC 28804. They are the best place to stock up on nutrition for race day, an extra pair of shorts, fresh shoes, and advice!

Are Strollers Allowed? TBA.

Are Headphones Allowed For Race Participants? Headphones are allowed, but are discouraged because they tend to distract the runner from their surroundings. 

Are There Time Cutoffs? Yes. Runners must maintain a pace faster than 20:00min/mile. Runners must leave Aid Station #2 (top of Patton Mountain Road - Mile Marker ~5) by 100 minutes into the race (9:40AM assuming the race starts promptly at 8:00AM). This means that runners must average a pace of at least 3 miles per hour, which is a fast walk. Keep in mind that the first 5 miles are uphill and will longer than the final five miles which are downhill.

Parking

Participants are encouraged to carpool to our event, though there should be plenty of race-day parking.

  • There is street parking on the neighborhood streets near the Start/Finish.
  • Downtown Parking Garage: The public parking garages in downtown Asheville (164 College St and 57 Rankin Ave) are an option and are located a short walk (about 1/2 mile) from the Start/Finish. 164 College St parking garage is the closet public parking garage to the Start/Finish. 
  • Downtown Street Parking: There is also lots of street parking just south of the Start/Finish in downtown Asheville on Central Ave and Woodfin St. 

What's Included?

All registrants will receive a custom race shirt (we will do our best to ensure that every single participants gets a shirt, but participants must register by May 16 in order to be guaranteed a shirt), finishers medal, amazing post-race food, freebies from our 2025 race sponsors, and bragging rights. 

Finish Zone

Be sure to hang out after your run to party with us at the Finish Zone. All our food and drink options are included with your registration!

The Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) permanently protects and stewards our region's most beloved natural areas. Since 1974, over 80,000 acres of unique plant and animal habitat, clean water sources, farmland, scenic beauty, and places for people to enjoy outdoor recreation have been permanently protected in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. For the Flying Squirrel Ten Miler we are proud to support a Western North Carolina based non-profit who is helping to conserve the endangered Carolina Flying Squirrel. The Carolina Flying Squirrel is a subspecies of the Northern Flying Squirrel and requires high elevation habitat to thrive.
