What Can You Do When You Support The Lobo Cancer Challenge?
And More!
The University of New Mexico
Comprehensive Cancer Center
Albuquerque, New Mexico
The annual Lobo Cancer Challenge community fundraiser helps the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center to deliver the best cancer care in the world right here in New Mexico. Our generous Event Sponsors make it possible for 100% of every single fundraising dollar raised by our Challengers to go directly to their choice of program in cancer patient treatment and support, advanced cancer research, community outreach, or education and training — because no one should have to face cancer alone.
The Lobo Cancer Challenge event day, held at the UNM Lobo Football Stadium in September, features a 25 Mile Bike Ride, a 50 Mile Bike Ride, a 5K Run / Walk, a Stadium Stair Challenge, and a Cub Pack Fun Run for children ages 1-10, as well as a Virtual Challenger option. Sponsor booths populate a Participant Village, and games and activities are offered on the festive field in a celebration of community support.

About
The Lobo Cancer Challenge
The University of New Mexico
Comprehensive Cancer Center
Albuquerque, New Mexico
This community fundraiser, held annually in September, helps ensure access to world-class patient care and treatments based on the most advanced cancer research at The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Lobo Cancer Challenge participants, called “Challengers,” choose the program they wish to support. Thanks to our sponsors, 100% of the funds that Challengers raise go directly to the program that means the most to them in the fight against cancer. Each of these 20 programs are critical to the UNM Cancer Center’s ability to bring the best cancer care in the world to New Mexicans. For example, the Lobo Cancer Challenge provides support for:
- Gas, food and lodging for patients who come from outside the greater Albuquerque area for cancer treatment;
- Pilot programs to scientifically test new ideas for cancer prevention, screening diagnosis, and treatment, especially for those cancers that affect New Mexicans the most;
- Community events to bring awareness and information about cancer prevention and screening to all parts of New Mexico; and
- Training and education programs in cancer research for students at all levels, from high school through postdoctoral fellowships and junior faculty.
Our generous sponsors defray the costs of the Lobo Cancer Challenge, which includes route safety and support and medical emergency care. Together with our in-kind sponsors, who contribute amenities and services for the event, all of our sponsors provide an excellent experience for our Challenger community.
Find fundraising results on the Impact page (with year-by-year details in its drop-down menu). The drop-down menu of the Media contact page showcases video for the annual Lobo Cancer Challenge events.
Why do we use the term “Challengers”? As our participants accomplish their own Challenge, they also challenge cancer together in our combined efforts. Our community is formed by this common purpose of honor, remembrance, empowerment, mutual support and celebration.
Lobo Cancer Challenge Through the Years

The family-friendly event provided activities on the field that fostered camaraderie. Sponsors populated our Participant Village and Wellness Village to greet our community. Thank you to all of our Donors and Supporters for joining us to #UniteAgainstCancer.

We thank our donors and volunteers for their support in making the day of the event into a special occasion. A fun new event was added so that children ages 1-10 could be Challengers too! Everyone enjoyed the excitement of their guided 1K Run / Walk around the field at University Stadium. And, Virtual Challengers joined the effort even though they could not be at University Stadium in Albuquerque.
In 2022, the Lobo Cancer Challenge returned in person to University Stadium, home of the UNM Lobos! The 5K Run/Walk and 25-, 50- and 100-mile Bike Routes were joined by a new Stadium Stair Challenge, for an exciting event day at University Stadium. A Virtual Challenger option was also offered for participation and fundraising from any location. With the support of 200 Volunteers and 76 Sponsors, the 851 Challengers in 78 teams celebrated together to #UniteAgainstCancer.
In 2021, the Lobo Cancer Challenge was again held as a virtual event to meet the challenge of a global pandemic, and once again, 329 Challengers from 16 states more than rose to the occasion.
In 2020, the Lobo Cancer Challenge was held as a virtual event to meet the challenge of a global pandemic. The 523 Challengers — more than ever — brought a spirit of fun to their Challenges. They climbed mountains; met in safe conditions to ride or walk with families, friends and colleagues; sold crafts and got creative! Challengers met in 61 teams from 20 states around the country! In the words of the T-shirt worn by the Rule family, “we did it for those we love.”
In 2019, 480 Challengers came together on the day of the event, held at University Stadium, home of the UNM Lobos, to ride a bike 25, 50 or 100 miles, or run or walk in the 5K as their Challenge.
In 2018, key numbers more than doubled from the first year: 350 Challengers participated in 41 teams. The first 5K Run/Walk offered a new pursuit for Challengers!
Ever since the first Lobo Cancer Challenge in 2017 with 168 bike riders in routes that started and finished at University Stadium, the Challenge has grown in scope, participation and results.
More than 370 volunteers gave generously of their time and energy over the first three years to make the annual events a success.
We appreciate this community! This is an amazing and caring group that comes together each year to take up the Challenge and unite against cancer together.

Connecting the Lobo Cancer Challenge community
All of our Ambassadors have demonstrated commitment and leadership in bringing their friends, family and community together to unite against cancer. They have a passion for helping others. Now, as a Lobo Cancer Challenge Ambassador, they can take their support for fellow New Mexicans in their cancer journey to another level; building relationships on behalf of the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center, providing encouragement, and educating others on the importance of cancer research.

Alma Aguilar & Troy Reese
“We participate in the Lobo Cancer Challenge to honor loved ones affected by cancer and to support vital research and care services.”
Alma works at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, since 2016. She understands that the doors she walks into for work every day, has a very different meaning and purpose for our patients who come to the same building. She has been a part of the Lobo Cancer Challenge since the first year in 2017. She started by volunteering and was encouraged to get on a bike and participate. Alma took on the challenge and has been riding since. She asked her friend Troy to train and teach her how to ride a road bike. In 2019, Alma participated in her first 50 mile bike event, which was the Lobo Cancer Challenge. She became fast friends with other Challengers, including survivor and 2024 Ambassador Chaz Rowland. Troy also became more than a friend/trainer to Alma and they married June 8, 2024. Troy works at Sandia National Labs and was a motor cross competitor for years. These days he enjoys mountain biking, hiking, running and cycling. He is easing his way back into activity after knee surgery in July 2024. He and Alma love spending time together doing outdoor activities. He has become a huge supporter of the Lobo Cancer Challenge and they are excited to return as 2025 Ambassadors.
Troy and Alma are eager to participate in the Lobo Cancer Challenge with their deep personal connections to the cause and their desire to contribute meaningfully to cancer research and support services. Having witnessed loved ones battle cancer, Alma and Troy understand the profound emotional and physical toll it takes on patients and their families. By joining the Challenge, they aim to honor those affected by the disease and help raise critical funds that can lead to advancements in cancer treatments and patient care. Their participation is driven by a commitment to fostering hope, encouraging community involvement, and making a tangible difference in the fight against cancer.
They dedicate their challenge to everyone in their lives who have been affected by cancer, directly or indirectly.

Elizabeth Cochran
“I've proudly taken part in the Lobo Cancer Challenge every single year—and 2025 is no different!”
This event means the world to me. It's a chance to rally with friends and colleagues from The University of New Mexico Foundation, all united in one powerful mission: to raise awareness and critical funds for cancer care and research. Whether I’m riding or running, it’s always from the heart.
Cancer has deeply affected the Puerto Rican maternal side of my family. My abuela—whom I never had the chance to meet—and three of my tías all lost their lives to this disease. My mom and I carry their memories with us every day, and we’ll never forget the pain we witnessed. But here in New Mexico, there is hope. There is passion. There is progress. That’s why I continue to show up.
Each year, we come together—patients, caregivers, families, friends—and become a powerful force. The energy on event day is electric. There’s something magical about thousands of people moving as one, bonded by purpose and love.
“Being named an Ambassador is an incredible honor—because helping others is who I am.”
Three years ago, I wrote the name of my best friend on my bib. She was newly diagnosed with breast cancer, and I have never witnessed such strength, courage, and humor. She is my hero. To the entire team at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center: thank you for treating her with such kindness, as if she were your own.
Sadly, this year, I will add three more names to my bib who have joined the battle.
Let’s make 2025 unforgettable.

Matty Connelly
Cancer has had a presence in my life for as long as I can remember, so I am humbled by the opportunity to serve as an Ambassador for the 2025 Lobo Cancer Challenge.
Growing up I would hear adults talk about how “The Big C” had taken this ancestor or that grandparent from us too soon. Cancer took my uncle Dan, my grandfather, and my aunt.
But Cancer changed from a looming dark specter to something that could be fought, treated, and attacked. An elementary schoolteacher returned from cancer treatment and was in remission. My dad had some skin removed from his face but he otherwise prevailed. He was also diagnosed with prostate cancer, treated it aggressively, and successfully overcame it for more than twenty additional years of life. My uncle was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, but he lived for many years and enjoyed some of his life’s most rewarding experiences.
Cancer had morphed from “the Big Bad C” into a foe to be respected but nevertheless faced head on.
When I moved to New Mexico in 1994, my first new friend, Delores, was recovering from breast cancer surgery. Delores became a mentor and “chosen family” member whose resilience and admirable presence in my life as a New Mexican can never be fully described or overstated. Our relationship was formed in part by her successful pursuit of cancer treatment!
In April 2019, at 83, my dad finally succumbed to cancer. In the course of seeking solace and understanding, I learned of the Lobo Cancer Challenge. I participated as an individual that year with his name on my bib and convinced my company, YLAW, P.C., to become a Howler sponsor. My firm’s senior partner, Terrance Yenson, who had begun treatment in his own battle against prostate cancer, fully supported this sponsorship. Dear Delores and my senior partner are now on my Lobo Cancer Challenge bibs.
“Cancer is only a part of life. While cancer has power and influence, it is also subject to defeat and remission. YLAW, P.C. and I have been honored to take part in the Lobo Cancer Challenge since 2019. My personal goal is for everyone to believe that with determination, science, innovation, and good will, we can keep cancer at bay and serve cancer fighters and their families in filling their additional time with precious memories and joy.”

Kimberley Craft
I participate in the Lobo Cancer Challenge because cancer changed my life when I was just 18 years old. Instead of enjoying the normal joys of senior year — prom, graduation, and preparing for college — I found myself facing a frightening diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Navigating the challenges of chemo and radiation — and working through the feelings of isolation and uncertainty — helped me find my resilience and taught me the power of having a strong community of support. As I moved into survivorship, this passion led me to found and facilitate a peer support group for other young adults with cancer.
Through this journey, I built many deep friendships with other young adult cancer survivors. I know firsthand the unique challenges young adults face during and after their cancer journey, and I am proud to know that the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center is working to build better outcomes for AYA survivors.
As a proud UNM graduate and native New Mexican, participating in the Lobo Cancer Challenge means more than just raising funds — it’s about giving back to the community that supported me through one of the toughest times of my life. Every dollar raised stays local to help other young patients and survivors like me, ensuring they don’t have to face cancer alone.
“This event allows me to honor my own journey while helping others on theirs, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to make a difference alongside friends, family, and fellow Lobos.”

Kaylee Deutsch-Armijo
I am thrilled to be a returning ambassador for the 2025 Lobo Cancer Challenge!
As a thyroid cancer survivor, I know first hand how important it is to have access to world class doctors, excellent care, clinical trials, and support — all of which can be found at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center! As a young adult cancer survivor, I have been involved in the cancer research community since my diagnosis in 2011. My illness drove me to pursue a career in oncology clinical research and I am proud to still work in the field today. Clinical trials play a key role in providing life saving treatment to cancer patients- and your donation helps bring further treatment options to New Mexico’s cancer patients.
I have been involved with the Cancer Challenge since its inception and I am excited to participate again this year! Not only is the event a blast, but its even better knowing that the funds are used to help patients and caregivers within our beautiful state! We are so lucky to have a such a wonderful facility within our community and this event ensures that that we surround patients with the best medical treatments, care, and support now and for years to come!
“I hope to see you on the bike path, race course, or stairs this year!”

Matthew Fero
Together with his wife, Jutta, Dr. Matthew Fero moved to New Mexico in 2015 to start and direct The University of New Mexico’s Stem Cell Transplant Program and to establish a new cancer and bone marrow and blood stem cell research laboratory. The Fero Laboratory uses pre-clinical models to identify novel therapeutic targets for hematological malignancies, and to test the therapeutic efficacy of novel agents.
Before Dr. Fero’s arrival, patients requiring a bone marrow transplant to treat their cancer needed to travel out of state. Now, thanks to the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, they can receive this treatment in Albuquerque.
In addition to treating leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and offering stem cell transplantation, Dr. Fero is the Director of the Stem Cell Therapy Program and co-leader of the Hematology Clinical Working Group. Clinical trials offer the most recent developments in cancer treatments to patients.
On many fronts, Dr. Fero is instrumental in bringing innovative treatments for blood cancers to New Mexico. As a Team Captain in the Lobo Cancer Challenge, he calls his team the “Heme Team” to honor those facing hematological (blood-related) cancers.
The Heme Team was the Top Fundraising Team in 2018 and has been among the Top Three Fundraising Teams every year. Dr. Fero’s family and friends have come from as far away as California and Montana to join the Heme Team, and to ride their bicycles 100 miles and 50 miles in the Lobo Cancer Challenge in support of the UNM Cancer Center’s lifesaving cancer research.
Dr. Fero is the first to sign up for the Lobo Cancer Challenge every year, and the first physician from the Cancer Center to set up a team, earning Bib No. 1. Dr. Fero invites everyone to join the Heme Team, even if they choose to support other areas of cancer research and patient services.
Dr. Fero’s dedication to fighting blood cancers on behalf of the people of New Mexico is extraordinary.
“The Lobo Cancer Challenge helps us to fight cancer together,” says Dr. Fero.

Elaine Gronberg
How does a California native and resident become a Lobo Cancer Challenge participant? Well, I’ve been following my brother Matt’s lead since I was born... Matt’s just a year older than I am and growing up I considered him my very best friend. Together we were competitive pair figure skaters, runners, skiers, hikers, and at some point we both became cyclists.
I didn’t follow him, however, into medicine. My brother Matt became Dr. Matthew Fero, and is now an Oncologist at the UNM Cancer Center! In 2017, when Matt asked me to join his ‘Heme Team’ for the inaugural Lobo Cancer Challenge I couldn’t say no.
This time it wasn’t just to follow Matt’s lead, but because I believe that everyone should do what they can to help people fighting cancer, to help fund research, and to always help in their community, whether that community be local, national or global. I may live a few states away, but I’m not too far away to see the importance of New Mexicans having a comprehensive cancer center right in their own state.
Since I’m not in the medical field, a cancer researcher, a doctor or nurse, I’m thrilled that there is a way for me to help...by raising money and encouraging others to do the same. Over and over again I tell people that 100% of their donations go directly to patient care and research.
“This is so important! The UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center is making the very most of every dollar we donate, and I proudly support them!”

Tim Harris
“I am Tim Harris and I have participated in the Lobo Cancer Challenge for 4 years. This year is 5 and I will be doing the 5K Run / Walk with my New Jersey.
“I still love to continue to be a fighter and to help others fight their own battles.
“I got chosen to be an Ambassador for 2025 this year. I am so excited...
oh yeah!”

Tyler Jenson with mom Michelle Jenson
Tyler Jenson and the Jenson Family Ambassadors
We participate in the Lobo Cancer Challenge to take a stand against cancer and support those facing this difficult journey. When Tyler was diagnosed with cancer at 15 years old, it changed our family’s story forever. We understand firsthand the fear, uncertainty, and emotional rollercoaster that comes with a cancer diagnosis.
Cancer is now a part of our story — and it fuels our commitment to making a difference. For us, the Lobo Cancer Challenge is more than just an event; it’s a powerful reminder of the strength found in community, hope, and action. Every step taken and every dollar raised brings us closer to a world where cancer no longer holds power over families and their futures.
“Together, we can make a difference and offer hope to those in need!”

Laura Niel
When my cycling team, the New Mexico Spokettes, found out about the inaugural Lobo Cancer Challenge in 2017, we knew we wanted to participate as we are passionate about cycling and fighting cancer. I volunteered to be a team captain then and have continued in that role ever since. I am also a team captain for the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT). Our medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. I am honored to be an Ambassador this year.
The Lobo Cancer Challenge is an opportunity to remember and honor our family and friends who are no longer with us due to cancer and to support our family and friends fighting cancer. My cycling team rides in memory of our teammate Kathy Thompson who passed away from cancer just before the 2019 Lobo Cancer Challenge. My work team participates for loved ones and with gratitude for our professionals. My loved ones include my mom who died from cancer 33 years ago and my twin brother who has stage 4 cancer. I am hopeful our efforts will fund research that will help him and everyone fighting cancer. I am so thankful for the great medical teams providing care and doing research at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. These efforts lead to more time with loved ones. The Lobo Cancer Challenge is a great time to celebrate them.
Cancer changes many lives. The Lobo Cancer Challenge is a way to fight back against cancer and support our community. One of my favorite quotes is the African proverb, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."
Let's go together and make a difference.

Family Ambassadors Steve, Kaitlin and Colleen Petranovich
We are so grateful this year to be Family Ambassadors for the Lobo Cancer Challenge!
About 5 years ago, our original team captain Marilee Petranovich (mom to Kaitlin and Colleen and wife to Steve) got us involved with the Lobo Cancer Challenge for the first time. When she first told us that she was going to bike 25 miles and wanted us to join her we thought she was crazy, but she inspired us all to start training. At that time she was in the midst of treatment for a very rare and aggressive gynecologic cancer, and she was getting excellent care at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center.
She was so immensely grateful for the care she had received that she wanted to do anything she could to give back, and the Lobo Cancer Challenge felt like the perfect opportunity.
Unfortunately Marilee passed away in September 2019, just weeks before what would have been her second Lobo Cancer Challenge. Up until her final few weeks she was absolutely determined that she would participate, no matter what.
“While we still grieve the loss of such an incredible person, we continue to be inspired by the attitude of joy, optimism, gratitude, and compassion that she always had.
“The UNM Cancer Center provided Marilee, and all of us, with a place of compassion, empathy, support, and most importantly hope during one of the most challenging times of our lives.
“It is our great honor to carry on her legacy and to continue supporting the Lobo Cancer Challenge in her memory.”

Deanna Rhodes
As a 2025 Lobo Cancer Challenge Ambassador, I'm honored to step into this role after years of dedicated involvement in the event. From volunteering to leading teams like The Pirates of the Cure-ibbean and participating as a walker and rider since its inception in 2017, my journey with the Lobo Cancer Challenge has been deeply personal and purposeful.
My passion for this cause stems from firsthand experiences with cancer's impact. Witnessing a loved one navigate the devastating loss of a cherished individual to this disease has been profoundly impactful. Conversely, I've also rejoiced in the triumphs of those who've conquered cancer through new, innovative therapies, reinforcing my commitment to drive change.
In my capacity as an ambassador, I'm determined to amplify awareness and support for cancer research, directing the funds I raise to be dedicated towards the General Research Fund, a broad research spectrum to benefit various cancer types. My aspiration extends beyond the local borders of New Mexico, aiming to contribute to a global fight against cancer's reach.
In my professional journey at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center over the past eight years, I've been privileged to witness the remarkable strides made in cancer research. Working in the cancer registry and engaging in oncology data abstraction and cancer conferences has given me a unique perspective on the multidisciplinary efforts and clinical trials shaping the future of cancer treatment and care.
“Through my ambassadorship and continued work, I aspire to inspire hope, foster awareness, and drive progress in the fight against cancer.”

Joshua Rogers
Together with her other two sons and Polly’s best friend, Josh founded Polly’s Run in 2009 to honor his mother after her passing. Polly inspired countless students and athletes through her teaching and coaching, and the annual Polly’s Run event rallies hundreds of friends, family members, and survivors to increase awareness and raise funds for the research to help end pancreatic cancer.
Bringing people together with a passion for fighting cancer:
“The Lobo Cancer Challenge is an incredibly special event for me. As the director of Polly's Run and the Polly Rogers Endowment for Pancreatic Cancer, it is a wonderful opportunity to fundraise and continue to raise awareness for the disease. The event has become a lifelong passion for me and I can't wait to do it again this year and the next!
“It’s also just a whole lot of fun that brings together people who all have a passion for fighting cancer.”

Charles Rowland
Ever since the 2nd Lobo Cancer Challenge in 2018, one could find me on my bike celebrating the incredible fact that such a possibility is even real. Granted that not all types of cancer are the same, and not all patients are the same, cancer is scary. My prostate cancer was discovered just weeks after an annual PSA screening revealed that my number had gone beyond 4. Dr. Satyan Shah and his team jumped on it, and I am forever grateful to the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center for the thoroughness, expertise, and patient care this institution brings to the table.
By the time the radical prostatectomy was performed two months later, the PSA reading was almost 6, and subsequent analysis disclosed that the rise had reached a catastrophic rate of increase. If no one had noticed the cancer, my life expectancy was probably no more than five years.
It’s been 13 years now, and I am still enjoying the wonderful autumn air and sky here in central New Mexico from the saddle of my bike. Participation in this event has led to remarkable friendships with several administrative staff members who have each had an impact on my life.
Other bridges have been crossed in the meantime, but the inspiration and encouragement from every single person I have encountered at the UNM Cancer Center make me proud to be a Challenger and proud to be a Lobo!
Go Lobos!

Kristin Underwood
This will be the seventh year I have participated in the Lobo Cancer Challenge. This event offers our community a chance to come together and honor cancer patients… and I participate in honor of them. I’ve been able to train and enjoy this event with my family and friends… as well as include my Eisai colleagues from all over the United States.
One of the greatest gifts of the Lobo Cancer Challenge is that 100% of the funds stay right here in New Mexico.
“To be asked to be a Lobo Cancer Challenge Ambassador is such an honor and I am so excited to continue to pay it forward. This is something I look forward to every year!”

Christine Valdez
My first year participating in the Lobo Cancer Challenge was in 2020 — I hiked Pino Trail! My second year in 2021, I hiked La Luz and have dedicated both of my Challenges to my friends, family, and patients who I treat and who we have lost.
I am an Oncology Nurse here at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. Being an Oncology Nurse offers me the opportunity to see my patients and families in some of their most vulnerable moments. I participate for ALL my patients and families. I am grateful that I can support specific program areas in the Lobo Cancer Challenge, which allow me to raise funds towards research and patient care for those families who are struggling financially and otherwise.
“I am excited to be an Ambassador this year!”

Mike Westphal
Cancer seems to touch every one of us. Several people in my family and friend circles have had cancer, including my Aunt Carol who received excellent treatment for lung cancer at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC).
UNMCCC is our local home for the fight against cancer and is the “safety net” treatment facility as well. The wealthiest and the least wealthy New Mexicans receive world class treatment, side by side.
I'm proud to have ridden in all of the Lobo Cancer Challenges and I've made friends with many fellow participants along the way. The Lobo Cancer Challenge gives my friends, family and me a great combination of physical challenge, important fundraising tools and a lot of fun. Meeting some of the UNMCCC community of patients, doctors, researchers and other team members and supporters is an added benefit of the event.
“It's awesome to see how much the Lobo Cancer Challenge and the UNMCCC have grown and achieved.”

Strength rising, fighting a war
Hope blooms with each dawn
— Sterling Wind
I am thrilled and honored to join my husband, Sterling Wind, as Family Ambassadors for the 2025 Lobo Cancer Challenge and to ride again with the indomitable HEME Team!
Sterling rides as a person touched by skin cancer, as a member of a family touched by cancer, and as a witness to what cancer can steal.
I grew up riding a solo bicycle, often following behind my parents on their tandem, as we criss-crossed the USA. Sterling and I were thrilled to bring one of those tandems to Albuquerque last year, riding in their honor in many ways, and my love of the bike was reborn after a multi-decade hiatus.
As a pediatrician, I have witnessed firsthand the ravages cancer inflicts on patients and families, and I have also experienced the unparalleled joy of cure that advancing research delivers more frequently every day.
“For our parents and the love of the bicycle, for friends, family and patients inflicted by this frightening disease and for the commitment to the research needed for finding cures, WE RIDE!”
Supporting cancer care and cancer research has never been more important, so I hope you will join Sterling and me in sponsoring the life-changing 2025 Lobo Cancer Challenge!

We will make every effort to conduct the event. However, if we judge the weather to be hazardous we will cancel it. Unfortunately, we cannot refund entry fees if the event is canceled.
Do participants have a fundraising commitment?
No. Each participant has a suggested fundraising minimum of $100, but don’t stop there. Raise more for the program of your choice and win great incentives in the process. We welcome over-achievement!
Please visit our Fundraising Incentives page to learn what you can earn by raising more than your minimum.
What do my fundraising dollars support?
As a registered participant, you can choose a program in cancer research, patient care, community outreach, or education and training for medical professionals at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. 100% of your donation dollars go to your program of choice.
Does my registration fee count toward my fundraising commitment?
No. The registration fee covers a portion of the cost for a great experience on your route. What kind of incentives do you offer for fundraising?

They will be announced at the Kickoff Celebration held prior to the Challenge event day. Only the amounts raised as of noon on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 count towards this recognition. Please visit our Fundraising Incentives page for details.
Why is there a suggested fundraising minimum?
The Lobo Cancer Challenge is a community fundraising event to provide money needed for patient services, patient clinical care and advanced cancer research at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. Funds raised by the Lobo Cancer Challenge support areas of patient services, patient care and cancer research that are not supported by federal, state, and private funding. Some examples include transportation for patients to get to and from their appointments, overnight stays for patients and their families in Albuquerque, and pilot research projects that help our cancer scientists secure larger research grants.
How do I get started on my fundraising?
We’ve compiled guidelines, tips and ideas on our Fundraising Tips and Tools page to help you get started and get it done. First, customize your Fundraising Page (your online fundraising web page). You may customize this page as part of registration, or at anytime after by logging in. Then, tell all your friends and family about your commitment to the Lobo Cancer Challenge!

FAQ
From our Director
Yolanda Sanchez, PhD
Director and CEO
University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center
Dear friends,
The Lobo Cancer Challenge helps us to deliver the best cancer care in the world. And when you support this fundraising event, you help all New Mexicans who are facing cancer.
The support of our generous sponsors enables us to channel 100% of the fundraising dollars to directly support cancer patient care, research, community outreach, and education and training at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center.
We are profoundly grateful to everyone in our community who has participated, volunteered, sponsored and donated. Thank you for your continued support.
Why Your Support of the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center is Critical
• The UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only cancer center in New Mexico that is designated by the National Cancer Institute. It holds NCI Comprehensive designation, the most rigorous and elite designation, and is one of only 56 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States.
• The UNM Cancer Center offers our region cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship care. More than 136 cancer physicians in every cancer specialty and more than 600 staff members provide treatment to patients from every county in New Mexico and from out-of-state as well. Together, almost 15,000 people were treated last year in more than 102,000 clinic visits.
• The 123 cancer scientists at the UNM Cancer Center focus on discovering the causes and cures for those cancers that most frequently affect New Mexicans. They provide cancer education and screening programs and engage with communities throughout our state to address specific cancer needs.
• Our cancer doctors and scientists are working together to discover new approaches to screening, diagnosing and treating cancer. From using pilot funds to collect preliminary data, to translating their discoveries into investigator-initiated clinical trials, they are developing new approaches to address the cancer burden in our state. Their discoveries have led to new and more effective treatments for many cancers such as those of the breast, ovaries, brain, skin, and blood.
• Through the collaborative statewide network called the New Mexico Cancer Care Alliance, our Clinical Research Office offers access for all New Mexicans to new drugs and therapies in clinical trials.
• The UNM Cancer Center trains more than 200 cancer physicians, scientists, pharmacists and nurses every year, contributing to our future healthcare workforce.
Join me in supporting these critical parts of our missions!
Sincerely,
Yolanda Sanchez, PhD

How do I know which route is best for me?
All routes are achievable with the proper amount of training and physical preparation. If you currently ride, use an online app to measure a route you can comfortably ride to give you an idea of which route you might prefer. Geodistance.com and other websites allow you to draw out a route and measure it online. You can also ask a local bike shop or friend who rides a fair amount to guide you.
Where can I find training tips so I’m prepared to tackle my route?
Consult with bike shops, bike clubs, and your friends who bike to get their suggestions for preparing for your bike ride. Connect with other Lobo Cancer Challenge participants on our Facebook page and train together. Another idea is to join a Lobo Cancer Challenge team and do regular training rides together.
Animal Policy: Are pets allowed?
For the safety of all participants, no animals are permitted at the Lobo Cancer Challenge on the course or in the spectator area. In accordance with UNM Policy and ADA guidelines, trained service animals are welcome. Please note that emotional support animals, therapy animals, and pets do not qualify as service animals under the ADA guidelines and are not permitted.
What kind of support is provided on the route?
We’ll take good care of you out there! We’ll have rest stops about every 12 -15 miles where you can hydrate, grab a snack or seek mechanical or medical support. We’ll also have SAG (Support And Gear) vehicles on course if you need help or a lift back to home base for any reason.
Do I need to wear a helmet? What do I need to know about rider safety?
The Lobo Cancer Challenge is a “Rules of the Road” bike ride:
• All participants must wear a helmet.
• All participants must obey City of Albuquerque Bicycle Laws and Safety Tips while riding in the Lobo Cancer Challenge.
• BE PREPARED to ride safely.
Why do I need a timing chip?
We use the timing chip to know where you are on your route. If you need help, we’ll be able to send help more quickly. Also, as you approach the finish line, we can prepare to announce your name as you complete your ride!
What happens if it rains on the day of the event?
We will make every effort to conduct the event. However, if we judge the weather to be hazardous we will cancel it. Unfortunately, we cannot refund entry fees if the event is canceled.

As a Cub Pack Challenger, how do I fundraise and what does it support?
Cub Pack Challengers receive a Fundraising Page (an online fundraising web page with a Donate button) upon registration, just like all of our other Challengers. We encourage our Cub Pack Challengers to personalize their fundraising page and then share it with their family and friends to invite them to donate to their fundraising efforts. When you register, you choose where 100% of your fundraising dollars will go from among 20 programs in cancer research, patient care, community outreach, or education and training for medical professionals at The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center. The child receives a T-shirt and a bib.

- strollers may not weave through packs of runners or walkers; and
- strollers must yield the right of way to others on the course.
Is the route accessible to people who use wheelchairs?
Yes, the event will be accessible to people using wheelchairs. Please note, however, that racing wheelchairs will not be permitted on the course.
If I don't pick up my shirt at Bib and T-Shirt Pickup, can I get one mailed?
No. Our purpose is to devote the maximum funding we can to cancer research and patient care, so unfortunately we cannot mail any T-shirts or bibs.

Sponsorship Opportunities 2025
The Value of Sponsorship
Partnering with the UNM Cancer Center enhances your company’s public profile; supports vital research and patient care that impacts employees and the wider community; and demonstrates a deep commitment to health and wellness.
- Now entering its ninth year, the Lobo Cancer Challenge is the premier fundraising and community outreach event benefiting the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center.
- Held annually in September, it offers bike rides, a 5K run/walk, a stair challenge and a Cub Pack Fun Run for children.
- Starting line and finish line celebrations are held at University Stadium, home of UNM Lobo football.
- Every dollar that Challengers raise goes to their choice of fund that supports cancer treatment, research, clinical trials, education and training, or community outreach at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center.
- Sponsorship is critical to allow the Center to direct 100% of participants’ fundraising to education, research, and patient care. In 2024, 1,704 participants, 83 teams, 150+ volunteers, and 38 sponsors joined together to raise more than $652,000 in support of world-class cancer care and research at the UNM Cancer Center. We hope you’ll join us in 2025!
As the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center within a 500-mile radius, we have the state’s largest team of cancer physicians and served more than 15,000 patients each year from every county in the state. Our mission is to focus scientific and clinical expertise—as well as interdisciplinary education and training programs—on those cancers that have high incidence, mortality, or disparity in the multiethnic and underserved populations of New Mexico.
We turn discovery into hope, translating groundbreaking research into new treatments for cancer patients.
The significant cancer health disparities in our state require financial support far beyond our budget. We depend upon the generosity of donors and community partners to help us honor our commitment as a public service health organization and to reduce the health barriers our patients face.
Philanthropic investment in the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center makes a difference in the lives and futures of New Mexicans each and every day.

Team Fun
While many teams enjoy training together and riding, running or walking together on the day of the Lobo Cancer Challenge, this is not a requirement. Team members may actually choose different routes, or join the team as a Virtual Challenger. Team members pull together in spirit!
Many teams choose to design custom jerseys or T-shirts or carry a banner as a fun way to show their unity. Learn more about Team T-Shirts.
What is the difference between a Corporate Team and a Family Team?
Corporate Teams are made up of colleagues and organizations rallying together to support our cause through workplace-driven fundraising and participation. Family Teams, on the other hand, are made up of loved ones—parents, children, siblings, and friends. Both groups play a vital role in the success of our event, and we are grateful for the unique and powerful ways they each contribute to our mission.
Fundraising
Each team member is responsible for their individual suggested minimum commitment.
However, team members can work together on fundraising activities and have fun at the same time!
Team members can help each other towards their individual goals by passing along fundraising ideas, participating in fundraising activities together, and reaching out to support and encourage each other in their efforts.
- All members of the team are eligible for individual fundraising incentives.
- As we celebrate the incredible efforts of all our participants, we are proud to recognize the Top Three fundraising Corporate Teams and the Top Three fundraising Family Teams in this year’s event during the event weekend. We’ll highlight the Top Fundraising Teams on our website.
Advantages of Being on a Team
- Teams are a great way to meet other people with a passion for fighting cancer.
- Team members can train together, even if you don’t ride the same route.
- Teams can hold joint events to raise money and have fun together.
- Team members can support each other.

Testimonials
The Lobo Cancer Challenge brought people together
KOAT-TV covered the event on Saturday, Sept. 20, when 1,940 participants, hundreds of volunteers, sponsors and supporters turned out together to raise money for ongoing research at the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center. Participants challenged themselves with walking, running, climbing stairs and bicycling events. A survivor shares how she sees the Lobo Cancer Challenge as an antidote to the pain, fear and loneliness of cancer. Another man said he wasn't "expecting all this, to be out on the Lobo field ... and everything you see here and the start-finish line. It's cool."
The Lobo Cancer Challenge supports New Mexicans fighting cancer
The Patient and Family Support Services Program is one of the funds Challengers may choose for their donations. Support therapists, registered dietitians, a case manager, a resource specialist and others are available to help cancer patients manage after diagnosis. The program helps with things like transportation, lodging, food supplements and medical equipment that cancer patients may need. In this coverage from KOAT-TV, a patient attests to the difference this made for her experience.
The Lobo Cancer Challenge provides training for future scientists
The Training and Education of Cancer Health Professionals is one of the funds Challengers may choose for their donations. This fund includes support for the Continuing Umbrella of Research Experience (CURE) program, which offers students from high school through college the opportunity to work alongside scientists and engage first hand in research. They can explore other avenues and are offered support in navigating next steps in their career. In this coverage from KOAT-TV, a student describes support and guidance for choices in their career path, including UNM seminars and other activities along with UNM Faculty and “near-peer” mentorship.
When You Support The Lobo Cancer Challenge, you can...
...help provide pilot funding to a number of our researchers. Pilot funding helps kick-start the new research projects that deepen our understanding of cancer and how to treat it.

Fundraisers like the Lobo Cancer Challenge are so important
Dr. Matthew Fero says the cancer center is needed in New Mexico. “Some of my patients have told me they did not even know there was a Comprehensive Cancer Center right down the street from them. They would travel out of state... and weren’t getting the same quality of care we can provide here... A lot of times we struggle in the early phases of research, where we don’t have the funds to get things going. That’s why fundraisers like the Lobo Cancer Challenge are so important.”

How To Ask For Donations
Asking for support is easier than you think, and after a while you are on a roll!
MENTION it to everyone you meet, talk to, text, email, chat, or have contact with in some way. Donations do not always come from where you expect them. Some people may say no but there are plenty who will say yes — so keep including your participation in the Lobo Cancer Challenge in your conversations!
Add a signature to your email with a link to your Fundraising Page. Set up a custom URL for your Fundraising Page to make it easy to write the URL in your signature.
TELL your own story. Tell people why you are participating and why challenging cancer is important to you. The more personal your story, the more others can relate. Cancer has affected everyone in some way.
REMIND your supporters that 100 percent of their donation will go directly to help cancer patients and research. And, tell them the fund you’ve chosen to support and why.
SHARE stories, encouragement and updates. Send your supporters emails, letters or an invitation to an online group. If you’re on a team, share this fundraising tip with your teammates and encourage them to do the same.
EXPRESS your gratitude — often! Thank your supporters often. Update them on your progress. Show them that their donation is making an impact on your campaign. And then thank them again.
FOLLOW UP with those to whom you’ve reached out but haven’t heard from. Many people are happy to give but just need a reminder.
WEAR your team gear. If you’re on a team, create something unique for your team to wear often. It can be a conversation starter to let others know the Challenge you are all taking on together. It’s also a great place to list your supporters as a way to thank them! Some ideas for team gear: t-shirts, buttons, and stickers.

Video - Early Years
for the Lobo Cancer Challenge
Thank you to our Media Sponsor KOAT-TV.
2021

A story of strength, pain and resilience
At 14, Kyle Stepp was diagnosed with stage four osteosarcoma. Doctors replaced part of his leg with a steel rod and he went through massive amounts of chemotherapy. Over the years, the doctors and staff at UNM Cancer Center and the other kids going through treatment became part of his family. In Fall of 2020, a mountain biking accident required the removal of his leg. "That pain has given me a perspective on the world and that perspective for me is a privilege. I get to view the world from such a deep, beautiful place. It's become a calling," he said. He brings the inspiration of his outlook to his support of the Lobo Cancer Challenge.

Giving Back through the Lobo Cancer Challenge
A three-time cancer survivor is giving back through the Lobo Cancer Challenge. From a nurse to now a fitness coach, she wants to make sure all of you battling cancer have a friend who knows exactly what you are going through.
Thank you KOAT-TV for your support.

Presenting Sponsor and staple of the community
Dr. Cheryl Willman proposed the idea of a cancer-fighting fundraiser with a bicycling component to the owner of Blake’s Lotaburger, Ron Rule, as they shared an enthusiasm for cycling. He was “to the moon” about this, as he saw it as a way to help prevent what happened to their family from happening to others. Lannie Ziemann of the family says the Lobo Cancer Challenge is “our way of turning what was a negative experience for us into something positive and hopeful and helpful we hope.” Blake’s Lotaburger has been the Presenting Sponsor of the Lobo Cancer Challenge from the very first year.
Thank you KOAT-TV for your support.

New Cancer-Fighting Tools
Bernard Tawfik, medical oncologist, says we are in a very big time right now where knowledge is power. Every year cancer survivor numbers go up. At UNM, we are actively starting a survivorship care program, which includes following patients through their cancer, screening tests, monitoring side effects to treatments received, and a summary document that stays with you from doctor to doctor. The Theranostics Program is another new approach. Instead of delivering radiation or chemotherapy to the whole body, Theranostics delivers a medicine that goes directly to the cancer and kills it on-site, and radiation is only used in close proximity to the tumor. Theranostics was not in use in the U.S. until about 2018, and the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only place in the state that offers it. These life-saving programs are generated by funds from the Lobo Cancer Challenge. Every pedal, every drop of sweat, and every dollar you raise, helping to save lives right here at home.
Thank you KOAT-TV for your support.

Helping with Hardships Cancer Survivors Face
Dr. Jean McDougall’s research with the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center focuses on food insecurity and financial hardships cancer survivors face. People who have never found themselves struggling financially can suddenly have a lot of extra costs. A certain group of people also face struggles with getting food. “We are working really hard to make sure we can help link people to organizations that can help bridge that financial gap… Cancer occurs in all groups of people. It all comes down to resources. The more you bring to the table, the better the outcome will be. [The Lobo Cancer Challenge is] raising awareness in the community and bringing it to the people in a way that we can all participate… [it’s a] really great thing.”
Thank you KOAT-TV for your support.
2019

Bike Partners
Two bike shops have partnered up with the Lobo Cancer Challenge since the beginning, to help ensure that participants’ bikes are road-ready, or to provide high-performance bikes to rent at a discount. Joshua Arnold of Routes Bicycle Tours says he enjoys the “aspect of health and cycling and seeing the community come together to better itself in such a wonderful, outdoor healthy way. Help fight the battle that affects so many of us.”
Thank you KOAT-TV for your support.

Riding to Honor his Brother
Marcos Paz rides to honor his brother Robert who passed away from leukemia. Marcos says had it not been for the treatment Robert received at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, he would not have had the extra time that he did. He was able to say goodbye to everyone he loved. Not long after his passing, his brother Marcos rode in the inaugural Lobo Cancer Challenge. “That was probably the best ride I had ever had in my life.” He was able to think of his beloved brother. Since then he has taken part in every Lobo Cancer Challenge.

The Lobo Cancer Challenge grows in its second year
The second annual event doubled the number of participants along with significant growth in fundraising. A 5K Run / Walk event was added to the 25, 50 and 100 mile bike routes. The Lobo Cancer Challenge isn't just about the people taking part. It's also about volunteers and the people cheering them on. Each story is the same yet each story is unique.

Fundraisers like the Lobo Cancer Challenge are so important
For the very first Lobo Cancer Challenge, participants could register for 25, 50 or 100 mile bike rides to raise money for diagnosis and treatment along with important research at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, founded in 1971.

Lobo Cancer Challenge participants ride to help others
Sandy Gold loves to cycle and credits it for getting her through a lot. She defeated melanoma and breast cancer and now she is riding in the very first Lobo Cancer Challenge to raise money for others who are in the middle of their cancer battle. She says the UNM Cancer Center is a very special place. Register to ride 25, 50 or 100 miles as a team, a family or by yourself. Sandy says, “Each mile could mean one more New Mexican beating cancer.”

No. We’re grateful for your time, effort and energy. But, you’re more than welcome to volunteer AND fundraise.
How can I volunteer and raise funds too?
In addition to signing up for your volunteer shift(s), you may also register for the Lobo Cancer Challenge. If your volunteer shift is on the day of the event, you may need to register as a Virtual Challenger to complete your Challenge before September 20, 2025. There is a suggested fundraising minimum, although we encourage you to set your own fundraising goal. Upon registration, you will have access to your own Fundraising Page to personalize!
How old do I need to be to volunteer?
You must be 18 years or older to volunteer. Volunteers younger than 18 (ages 14 - 17) must have parental or legal guardian consent, and must remain with their parent or guardian at all times. The parent or legal guardian will sign a waiver on the minor volunteer's behalf.
I want to share the importance of volunteerism with my children; can they join me during my shift?
We encourage families to volunteer together as long as everyone is at least 14 years old. Children under 14 years old are not eligible to volunteer.
