Mighty Moose 5k Run/Walk for Ovarian Cancer is held in Concord, MA at Concord Carlisle Regional High School.

About Mighty Moose 5k Run/Walk for Ovarian Cancer

This year registrants will be able to participate in-person on September 27th, 2026 or virtually during the 2 weeks leading up to the in-person race day. We are waiving the entry fee again this year and hope you will consider a donation.

The Mighty Moose Fun Run/Walk is held in memory of Jenna Swaim, a loving mother, and wife who lost her courageous four-year battle with ovarian cancer on July 3, 2018. She was 43 years old. The name of the event is inspired by Jenna’s Alaskan roots, love for fun, and strength! The event is part of the Kicks for Cancer weekend, a very successful fundraiser that the Concord Carlisle High School soccer team and coaches Ray Pavlik & Steve Wells started in 2007.

We will continue Jenna‘s legacy and vision to raise crucial funding for this cause. All funds raised will support the ovarian cancer research of Dr. Kevin Elias. Together we are making a difference!

About Jenna

Image

Jenna Hoge Swaim, age 43, of Concord, Massachusetts, died peacefully at home on July 3, 2018, after a four-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Jenna grew up enjoying the majestic views and pristine landscapes of Alaska. She earned a bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1996, where she played varsity soccer, earned multiple league honors, and served as the team captain her senior year. Upon graduation, she worked in investment banking at Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley and received a Master of Business Administration from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 2001. She transitioned from finance to human resources and worked at OneBeacon Insurance and PeopleFluent, all while raising her young family. Jenna thrived in and loved her career.

Jenna met Derek Swaim the first weekend at graduate school. They shared passions for sports, the outdoors, and traveling and after getting married settled in Concord, Massachusetts. She cherished nothing more than Derek and their three beautiful children Luke, Jason, and Nora, and she put all of her incredible spirit, talent, and energy into her family. They brought smiles and laughter to her heart every day. Jenna was active in her community and tirelessly supported her children's schools, clubs, and abundant activities, always cheering for, and often coaching, them and their teams. With her family, she enjoyed hiking, biking, running, golfing, skiing, and the outdoors, and together they traveled extensively.

Her extended family and friends were also very important to her. Jenna possessed a gift for forming lasting friendships wherever she went. She loved getting family and friends together. She was tremendously thankful for all the support that her sister, family, friends, neighbors, and children's teachers provided to her family and her.

Her positive and kind attitude was infectious. She will be remembered by the many lives she touched for her bright smile, humility, thoughtfulness, strength of character, and dedication to every endeavor. Jenna loved life, cherished it, and lived it to the fullest. She was extremely grateful and felt lucky to have had such a full life in a short period of time.

OPTIONAL INDIVIDUAL FUNDRAISER PAGES CREATED

With each registration, an individual fundraising website will be created in your name with default content about our cause. You will have the option to use this page/content to help us raise money via donations for this year’s race. Following your registration, you will receive an email with details regarding how you can customize your page, including ideas for soliciting donations and increasing your fundraising goal.

Although you are not required to join a team and fundraise, we highly encourage you to join or form one and have fun with it! We’d love to see some friendly competition between teams to see who can raise the most money and have the most donors. We will also have awards for individual fundraisers!

OPTION FOR CREATING OR JOINING A FUNDRAISING TEAM

During the registration process, you will also have the option to create your own fundraising team or join an existing fundraising team. This will enable you to pull a group together to raise money as a team to support our cause.

This is a great opportunity to join your neighbors, gather your family and friends, re-engage with college buddies, or contacts from your past. How about a team of work colleagues or maybe your kids want to gather teammates, school friends, or extended family? Each team will have a Captain to help communicate and keep the fundraising team on track.

INCLUDED A “DONATION ONLY” OPTION

For those who are not interested in fundraising or participating in the race but want to support this critically important mission to prevent ovarian cancer, we included an option for a direct donation through the online registration process or the donate button.

Contribute to the event by donating to an individual, a team, or making an outright donation. Your donation is especially critical this year to fund ovarian cancer research and prevention. We need your financial support!

Below you can download a PDF version of the course map.

We have altered the Mighty Moose 5k course for 2022, in response to feedback from the Concord Police Department. The main feature of the new course is that it avoids running through Concord Center, which caused a prolonged traffic bottleneck on a Sunday morning. The new course preserves as much of the old course as possible, but reduces the impact on Concord Center. It achieves this by looping around CCHS just after the start, which then allows us to avoid running through Concord Depot and Concord Center.

Our Focus

Race Day Parking

On the day of the event, please plan to enter CCHS via Walden Street. The Thoreau Street entrance will be closed to car traffic at 7 AM and will reopen shortly after the start of the 5k. We will have volunteers to help direct you to parking spaces in front of the high school. Please carpool on Sunday morning, if possible, so we can maximize parking at the high school. If the high school lots fill up, we may ask you to park at Alcott School or the streets surrounding Alcott. You will need to account for the time it will take to walk to CCHS.

Plan to arrive by 7:00 AM for the Kids 1 Mile and 1/2 Runs and by 7:45 AM for the 5k. Please follow the direction of our parking attendants on the day of the race. We have met with the Beede Center and are asking Registrants who are members of the Beede Center to use their lot. Please park at the far end of the Beede lot that is closest to Walden Street.

Race Day Protocols

We wish to provide a Covid safe environment for the 2021 event and ask you to adhere to the following safety protocols:

  • Masks/face coverings are optional but fully supported by the Mighty Moose if you choose to wear one prior, during or following the race.
  • All event activities will take place outside and there will be no access into Concord Carlisle High School. Portable Toilets will be provided and will be located in the CCHS parking lot. There will be no face painting this year.
  • We will not require participants to wear a mask on the racecourse. In general, because of airflow and dispersion afforded by being outdoors, as well as the limited duration that any two participants spend near each other on the course, the probability of transmission during racing is strongly reduced. Water station volunteers will wear gloves, and offer cups of water with an extended arm.
  • Social distancing when outdoors, one meter (three feet), should be maintained between individuals even on the race course.
  • Medical staff will be provided with masks and gloves and be stationed outdoors if needed. Runners, staff, or volunteers entering our medical tent will be offered a mask to wear prior to entry.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available at key locations near the start of the race.
  • We highly recommend picking up your race bib and registration packet on Saturday, Sept. 25 at CCHS. The hours are 9:30 am - Noon and 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm in front of the CCHS cafeteria.
  • Children who are running the 1 mile or ½ mile will be spread out by either age or grade and will have a staggered start on the lower field. There is plenty of space on the lower fields for parents to spread out around the field.
  • Runners and walkers at the 5k starting line will be spaced out at the start of the race according to their estimated per mile time. All Bibs will have a timing mechanism tracking when you cross the start line and the finish line enabling us to stagger the cohorts at the start. Your bib will not start timing your 5k until you pass through the starting line. You must wait in your designated area with your per mile time cohort prior to the start of the race as volunteers will direct each group to progress toward the starting line of the race. This will allow participants to maintain distance on the race course.
