Mill Pond Mile

It's time to register for the 27th Annual Mill Pond Mile!

The Mill Pond Mile is a one-mile run around the scenic Mill Pond in New London, Minnesota. It takes place each July, before the annual Water Days parade. It is a family fun run for all ages, not an officially timed race, so for those who wish to keep track of personal bests, we encourage participants, parents, or friends to bring a wearable timer or stopwatch.

The Mill Pond Mile was started in 2000 by Jim and Shelly Berg to honor the memory of their 10 year old son, Cody, who died in a car-bike accident in 1999. Each spring, all proceeds from the race go to provide college scholarships for members of the New London Spicer graduating class. In 2022, Shelly's husband, Jim, passed away after a short but hard-fought battle with cancer. The scholarship fund was renamed the "Cody and Jim Berg Scholarship Fund," and the Mill Pond Mile continues on, thanks in large part to the dedication of the entire Berg family, plus friends, volunteers, and sponsors.

Cody and James Berg Memorial Scholarship

The Berg family is incredibly grateful to our participants, sponsors, and donors for their continued support of the Mill Pond Mile. Thanks to this amazing community, we have now awarded a total of $147,500 in scholarships.

In addition, the Mill Pond Mile has contributed $5,000 to the New London-Spicer Education Foundation, supporting all students K-12. We are also proud to support other nonprofit organizations in our community.

In 2007, Jim and Shelly Berg awarded the first Cody Berg Memorial Scholarships to six members of Cody's graduating class. Three of the scholarships focused on Cody's unique interest areas (running, drama, and the outdoors); the remaining three were general scholarships. graduating class. 

In 2023, the scholarship was renamed the "Cody and James Berg Memorial Scholarship" to recognize the years of love, dedication, and effort that Cody's dad – Jim Berg – put into the Mill Pond Mile. In 2002, Jim passed away after a brief but fierce battle with cancer.

Cody was an energetic, active kid who loved all kinds of outdoor activities, including baseball, hunting, riding go-carts and running. On April 12, 1999, at the age of 10, Cody was hit by a car and died while riding his bike near his home. His parents, Jim and Shelly Berg, along with friends and family, organized the Mill Pond Mile in the hopes that others will always remember the incredible joy that Cody brought to us during his short life.
