FAQS & HOW TO
Frequently Asked Questions
GENERAL
WHAT IS SWIMRUN?
Swimrun is the fastest growing endurance sport on the planet. NOT an aquathlon, swimrun is comprised of 2-person teams and solo athletes swimming and running back and forth, in their wetsuits and shoes (without changing), over multiple legs of open water swimming and all-terrain running, totaling anywhere from 10-20 miles from start to finish.
I'M MORE OF A RUNNER (OR A SWIMMER), WILL I BE ABLE TO DO THIS?
Of course you can. We welcome athletes of all ages and abilities at Odyssey. Our swimrunner base is comprised of people from all walks of life and all endurance levels. While it is true that we have a large quantity of triathletes that have transitioned to swimrun or simply work swimrun into their triathlon season, we also have just as big of a population of swimmers, runners, and those that really didn't do a lot of either until they got into swimrun. If you swim, or run, you can certainly add the missing piece. Remember that swimrun is about the fun you have out there so if you are better at one than the other, that's ok, you'll find yourself loving them both equally out on our courses.
HOW COMPETITIVE IS SWIMRUN? WHAT'S THE VIBE?
Just like anything else, it's what you make of it. Swimrun can be as competitive or as laid back as you want it to be. The great thing about the sport is that there's absolutely no pressure and everyone is there to have fun and support each other. If you've been to a trail run or ultra, swimrun has a very similar vibe. Whether you're the kind of athlete that takes off like a cannon when the gun goes off red lining it the entire time, or someone that likes to ease into things and enjoy every second along the way, Odyssey has a home for you.

Yes you can. CLICK HERE to learn how.
CAN I SWAP OUT MY TEAMMATE? HOW DO I DO IT?
Yes you can. The easiest way to do so is to just email us. We will delete your current teammate and your new one can sign up for the team as normal.
SHOULD I REGISTER AS A TEAM OR SOLO?
When the sport started it only allowed registration as teams of 2. Over the years we have expanded it to allow solo athletes because we realize that some people can't find a teammate and/or they would rather just race alone, and we prefer to still allow those athletes to race. That being said, certainly recommend racing as a team. In our opinion, team racing is the pinnacle of fun at swimrun. Being part of a team offers added safety, encouragement, and camaraderie along the way, something that many find essential to their race day success.
CAN MINORS PARTICIPATE IN SWIMRUN?
Yes. The minor's parent or legal guardian MUST sign him/her up for the race. Prior to signing up that parent or guardian MUST email us for approval.
I HAVE COMPLETED MY TEAM REGISTRATION & PAID, HOW DOES MY TEAMMATE SIGN UP?
First, your teammate MUST sign up him/herself, you cannot sign up your teammate. Next, your teammate can sign up by either following the normal process you did but selecting the team name from a drop down on the third screen OR going to our GROUPS/TEAMS page, finding your team, and clicking the "JOIN" button under the name of the team. Either way works.
WHAT IF I SIGN UP FOR MULTIPLE RACES BUT AT DIFFERENT TIMES, CAN I GET BUNDLE PRICING AFTER THE FACT?
Just email us, we will extend the same bundle discount via a refund in the price difference done manually.
IF AN ATHLETE NEEDS A NEW TEAMMATE IS THERE A RESOURCE WHERE HE/SHE CAN FIND ONE?
Join our Facebook Group. With well over 1,000 athletes it is a great resource to find a teammate if you need one.
GEAR
DO WE HAVE TO WEAR A WETSUIT IN SWIMRUN AND WHY?
Unless otherwise stated, wetsuits are mandatory at all events without exception. There may be a very limited number of events that are warm enough, that we will announce in the weeks/days leading to the event, that they are optional, but everyone should go into each race assuming they are mandatory and that that will not change. Wetsuits are not just about keeping an athlete warm they are about flotation and given the ground the athletes and race crew cover, any added level of individual safety we can implement is a step towards a safer race for everyone.
WHAT TYPE OF WETSUITS ARE ALLOWED?
Athletes may use any wetsuit they wish. That being said, we highly recommend purchasing (or renting) an Ark SwimRun Wetsuit. While triathlon wetsuits may technically work, hardly anyone uses them. They are a lot thicker, stiffer, and harder to run in that Ark SwimRun Wetsuits, which are designed for the sport of SwimRun. Ark suits are thinner, more flexible, and are comfortable to run in making the transition from swim to run and run to swim much easier and enjoyable.
HOW DO I RENT A WETSUIT?
We have a limited number of wetsuits available for rent at each of our events. These are Ark wetsuits. The cost to rent them is $55. They are given at packet pickup and excepted to be returned after the event. You can reserve and pay for yours as an add-on during registration. If you decide you want to rent one after you've already registered you can go back in and add it on after the fact. If you do not know how to do so CLICK HERE. If you decide later you no longer need your rental suit email us, we can remove it and issue you a refund as long as it's not the week of the event.
WHAT TYPE OF SHOES ARE RECOMMENDED FOR SWIMRUN?
Any type of lightweight trail shoe with grip that will drain easily and not retain water.
ARE HAND PADDLES & PULL BUOYS ALLOWED IN SWIMRUN AND WHY?
Yes they are. They are allowed because with all the swimming and running a pull buoy will help save your legs and energy throughout the day. Same mindset with the paddles. While paddles do require some training prior to the event to get used to, they can offer some relief while maintaining speed on the course.
ARE SNORKELS & FINS ALLOWED IN SWIMRUN?
They are but we do not recommend them. Anyone we have ever seen use them ditches them at the first or second hydration station. Remember you have to carry whatever you start with for the event, or at least in between hydration stations and carrying paddles and a snorkel all day is not appealing and doesn't make the race easier.
IS IT MANDATORY THAT TEAMS BE TETHERED TOGETHER DURING THE RACE?
It is mandatory that each team has 1 tether on them at all times. It is only mandatory to actually be tethered together if you are continuously separating during the swim or we institute a tethered policy at the start or during the race due to fog, waves, other weather, etc. Otherwise the tether is optional, but it does add another level of fun.
WHAT OTHER GEAR IS MANDATORY?

WHAT WE DO IF MY TEAMMATE OR I ARE HURT OR WE COME ACROSS SOMEONE ELSE THAT IS?
In any actual severe emergency we always recommend calling 911.
IN THE WATER If an emergency occurs in the water, first try to get the attention of the kayaks and/or rescue vessels by waving your hands above your head and blowing on your whistle until someone comes to help you. If no one immediately comes to your aid float on your back while still waving your hands and blowing on your whistle to the best of your ability. If swimming to shore is a viable option you may want to do that as well and seek help from the shore, if you're able to do so. ON THE TRAILS If you find yourself in trouble on the trails and cannot continue to the next hydration/nutrition stop, stay where you are and blow your whistle until someone comes to help you. If you stay on trail odds are someone will come by that's part of the race. If possible to continue on foot, we recommend moving forward on the course until you get to a station or come to someone that can help.
While we certainly do all we can to add an element of safety to both the land and water, please remember that these are open courses in remote areas and you are participating in this event at your own risk fully realizing the inherent danger that comes with being in nature.
WHAT IF MY TEAMMATE CANNOT CONTINUE BUT I CAN?
Generally if one teammate cannot continue then unfortunately the day is over for both members of the team. That's just how it is. However, if you find yourself at a hydration station and your teammate has a way back to the finish line and has been medically cleared, then you can have a volunteer or staff member call the race director(s) and we can issue you the ok to continue. This is a rare occurrence and may not be done without our approval.
WHAT IF I/WE DON'T FINISH?
Our goal is to help get everyone across that finish line. That being said, sometimes that just doesn't happen. Although it's rare, it's understandable, and certainly nothing to be ashamed of. If you have to drop out we ask that you let us know by making your way to a hydration station, volunteer, finish line, etc and letting them know your you didn't finish. We also need you to turn in your timing chip and strap to our timer (or at least a staff member or volunteer) once you have decided you won't be continuing. Those that start and do not finish are welcome to join the finish line festivities if they wish.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT THE FINISH LINE?
Our finish line chute consists of large teardrop flags and a custom inflatable accented by upbeat music and a charismatic announcer proclaiming your accomplishment! Beyond the finish you will have food and drink as well as a finisher's item (if we are giving one) and an awards ceremony later in the day.
WHAT TYPE OF POST RACE FOOD & DRINK IS SERVED?
Pizza Rocks makes fresh made to order pizzas all morning and we have keg beer ready to go!

DO YOU OFFER LIVE TRACKING?
No we do not.

COMMONSENSE & RESPONSIBILITY
REMEMBER THAT YOU SIGNED UP OF YOUR OWN FREEWILL FOR THIS EVENT - YOU ARE ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN DECISIONS & SAFETY.
In signing up, you also acknowledge there are inherent dangers that come with participation in outdoor endurance events, open water swimming, trail/road running, etc. By signing up you agree that there is a risk of injury and/or bodily harm and to not hold the event, venues, municipalities, vendors, volunteers, and sponsors responsible.
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR EDUCATING YOURSELF ABOUT THE RACE.
This includes knowing the course and surroundings to the best of your ability. We realize that with some courses it’s impossible to fully know and memorize the course. Just do your best and always keep your head up and be aware of your surroundings. Don't assume that because the person in front of you goes a certain way, that's the correct way. See the markings for yourself and make your own decisions.
BE KIND AND RESPECTFUL.
If you are just kind, polite, and respectful to everyone you see at all times (associated with the race or not), then you will be in a good place. Be helpful to those in need and please thank everyone that's out there helping out, without them we couldn't do what we do.
HELP OTHERS IN NEED.
If you come across anyone in need of help while racing, you are expected to offer them assistance when/if it’s safe and you are able to do so. We are out there to race but to also have fun and experience swimrun together. Take care of each other. It’s a big course and we cannot be everywhere at once.
DO NOT LITTER.
Please be sure to leave the race site better than you found it. That means not only picking up after yourself but if you see discarded trash please do your part to help us keep the area clean by picking it up. The places we hold swimrun events are remote, beautiful, and pristine. We MUST keep them this way if we are to be allowed back year after year. Thank you.
How To Make Changes to Your Registration
We give athletes full access to self manage their RunSignup account. This means that you can login to your account and change/update a majority of the information for most of the time leading up to the race. 4-weeks prior to the event date we restrict editing of shirt size and race deferrals because that’s the time at which we have to order materials and supplies for the race. See below for more details on deadlines and how to manage your registration.
6-WEEKS PRIOR - Sun, Aug 4, 2024 - 11:59 PM CST - Deadline for the following:

Inclement Weather Protocols
In the unlikely event of bad weather (lightning, flooding, hurricane force winds, etc) we will delay 20-minutes at a time until the weather clears. If the weather does not clear we will assess the situation 20-minutes at a time (on-going) and decide what necessary steps need to be taken to still have the event, in some fashion, whether it’s a shortened distance, or just a run. We do NOT want to alter or cancel part of or all of the event but we will do what is necessary to ensure the safety of our athletes. Please know that whatever is decided in a bad weather situation it is with your best interest in mind.

SITE MAP
The button/link below is a live google site map. It also contains the course maps for the event. If pulled up when onsite you will see where you are (blue dot) in relation to the items on the map.
Placement of Race Wearables
Follow these instructions to properly wear the items we give you during packet pickup for the race.
- Silicone Swim Cap - Wear it on your head during all swims. Yes you must wear the one we give you. Yours to keep after the race.
- Number Bib Singlet - Each team is assigned a number and should have matching bibs representing that number. This is our way of identifying you during the race. You MUST always wear the bib on the outermost layer (over your wetsuit). If you take your wetsuit down to your waste after your swim the bib must go back on after. Same applies to putting your wetsuit top back up/on to go in for a swim. Yours to keep after the race.
- Silicone Collapsable Cup - Each person is given one and expected to carry it unless you have another form of hydration you wish to carry on you. This can be easily balled up and put in a pocket or between your apparel and wetsuit. Whatever works. If you have a flask, bottle, camelback, whatever, the point is you need to make sure you have a way to take in hydration from the coolers at our hydration stations or carry your own on you. Yours to keep after the race.
- Timing Chip & Strap - Be sure to feed the velcro strap through the timing chip holes and secure it to your ankle via the ankle strap. Tight enough that there's no doubt it will stay on but not too tight that it cuts of circulation. If you're worried about it coming off you can secure the two ends of the strap (once put on your ankle) with a safety pin. Each solo athlete gets their own timing chip and strap. Each team gets only one timing chip and strap. It does not matter who wears it since you race together and cross the finish line at the same time. DO NOT COVER YOUR CHIP WITH SOCKS OR COMPRESSION GEAR. COVERED CHIPS HAVE A TOUGH TIME CAPTURING TIMES. Please return these to us at the finish line.
- Restube - These are only given to solo racers because they do not have a teammate to rely on during the race for an added layer of safety both on land and in the water. The restube is given as a free rental at packet pickup. Solo racers wear this around their waste like a fanny pack but it's much smaller and if firmly secured it is not really noticeable during the race. This device is meant to be used in emergency situations in the water (whatever that may be). Pull the ripcord and it auto inflates a moderate sized yellow buoy to help you float and help us identify that you are in need of help. Additionally the ripcord has a built in whistle so solo athletes can count it towards the mandatory whistle requirement. Please return these to us at the finish line.
- Rental Wetsuits - Be sure to wear these (applies to all swimrun wetsuits) with the zipper in the front. Please empty out all pockets and return these to us at the finish line.

COURSE MARKINGS
The entire run course is marked through a combination of neon pink survey flags, tree-hanging ribbons, and circular arrow ground signs. The swim course entry is not usually marked beyond the land markings guiding you to the edge of the water. The swim itself may have an orange buoy or two if there are coves that a swimmer needs to swim in to. Usually it's just the exit of the swim being marked with a huge neon yellow wind flag.
RESTROOMS
There are a handful of permanent structure restrooms located on the course but we do not bring any portable restrooms in for the event. There are nice indoor restrooms at the start/finish area.
ON-COURSE HYDRATION
We will have a hydrations station stocked with one cooler of water and one cooler of electrolyte water. The electrolyte water has little to no calories. Additionally each station will have a bucket of gels. Please do not "stock up" on gels taking more than you need to use in that immediate moment. If you need to have more hydration and nutrition than we provide please plan ahead and carry it on you. We recommend at least carrying a soft silicone hydration flask you can fill with liquid at each station and carry with you. We do provide a collapsable silicone cup you carry on you and drink from at each station but it doesn't allow for carrying hydration between stations. Some stations will have snacks and/or sandwiches as well, specifically the ones at Mountain Lake and the top of Mt Constitution.
POST RACE FOOD & DRINK
All finishers will have access to post race food and drink near the finish line area. This swimrun specifically is known for pizza that's made to order and keg beer!
SAFETY
All of our courses are open. This means that although we have boats monitoring traffic in the water, everyone should be alert and aware of their surroundings at all times. On land all trails are open to the public and any road crossings may have vehicular or bicycle traffic. Always look both ways before crossing. On the course we have safety boats and kayaks as well as land medics traversing pivotal areas most likely to require their attention. We cannot cover every mile of the course at all times, that’s why having a teammate is beneficial. Also remember to carry all mandatory gear during the race, some of it includes safety essentials.
COURSE MEDICAL
We will have medical stationed at the start/finish line and also roaming the entire course throughout the day.

RESULTS & RANKINGS
Rules
- Minors MUST have race director permission to signup. Contact us for permission. Minors are anyone wishing to sign up under the age of 18. Minors must also have their parents sign them up.
- Mandatory gear is just that, mandatory. We reserve the right to check for mandatory gear any time during the race. Those that do not have their mandatory gear on them while racing will be disqualified. For a full list of mandatory gear please CLICK HERE.
- Teams MUST carry a tether on them but are only required to be tethered together while racing if:
- They want to race tethered together for extra fun.
- They find themselves continuously separating on the swims.
- If the race institutes an "all teams must be tethered" announcement because of wether (fog, heavy rain, choppy conditions, etc). We may institute this before the start of the race or during the race letting teams know while racing at any time.
- Teams MUST stay together at all times. There is no exception to this. If one teammate cannot continue the other may NOT leave him/her.
- Stay on the marked course. Even going off course and returning to the course is not allowed. Swimrun is like trail running, it's heads-up racing. Be sure to always be scanning and looking for course markings to guide you.
- No littering. There are various areas with trash cans along the way. You may also dispose of your trash at the hydration station as long as there is a trashcan and/or volunteer there to take it. We are allowed to have swimrun in these beautiful locations because we respect nature and strive to leave each area better than we found it.
- Educate yourself. Coming into a swimrun event unprepared is unacceptable. Please be sure to read over this entire website, read all emails, and watch/listen to all YouTube videos. It is each individual participant's responsibility to come the start line as prepared as possible.

Travel & Lodging
CLOSEST AIRPORT & DISTANCE TO RACE SITE
- Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, or SEA
- From the airport it's about 100-miles and 90-120min drive to get to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal (Washington State Ferries).
- Once on the ferry to Orcas Island it takes 45-60min.
- Once off the ferry the drive to Rosario Resort from the Orcas Ferry Terminal is 14-miles and takes about 30min.
The entire trip from the aiport to Rosario takes about 3.5-hours. There are also flights available from a local smaller airport via Kenmore Air, that allow you to take a shuttle from SeaTac to Kenmore's planes and then fly direct to the island. This option is a lot shorter but it costs more.
LODGING
We do not offer event specific lodging or discounts. Most athletes stay at Rosario Resort as it is an affordable option. Outside of that there are many B&Bs to stay at in the area.
Volunteer Groups
Large groups help us fill our volunteer positions fast and greatly contribute to setup/teardown, and work during the event. Volunteers make what we do possible and groups that come out make it that much easier. We allocated anywhere from $500-$2,000 per event to groups that signup and come out. Below are the guidelines we have set for those groups wishing to earn a donation.
Eligibility - All groups/clubs/teams must follow these steps:
- Step #1 - All group members MUST register via our online volunteer registration portal. Button above or click "VOLUNTEER" on the website menu to sign up.
- Step #2 - Inform each member of your group that when they signup they must clearly list/identify what group they are part of to be counted in your group's total. There's a place during registration where they may input this info.
- Step #3 - Any group member that is signed up and wishes to receive credit for their shift must be on time, work the entire shift, and check in and out with our volunteer coordinator and/or the director of the area they are assigned. We send instructions on this the week of the event.
Donation Rules - Below is our system for distribution of donations to groups that come out and volunteer at our events.
- Once a team/group/club/organization hits 6 volunteer shifts worked they get $15 per shift worked. For example if 12 volunteers from a group signed up and completed 12 shifts they would receive a check for $180 for their group.
- Checks will be mailed once volunteer numbers and hours are verified. Please allow 4-6 weeks for check delivery. If the steps and rules clearly listed above are not followed those individuals not following them will not be counted towards a groups total.
What is USA Triathlon Sanctioned & Certified?
A majority of what you will read below was written by CapTex Triathlon & High Five Events. They did such a great job explaining things on the sanctioned and certified topic we figured it best not to reinvent the wheel, but we have to give them credit where credit is due. Good job!
BENEFITS OF ÖTILLÖ SWIMRUNS IN THE USA BEING USAT-SANCTIONED WITH A CERTIFIED RACE DIRECTOR.
What does an event labeled as a “Sanctioned Event” with a “Certified Race Director” mean? Why should you care?
USAT-Sanctioned
USAT means USA Triathlon. USA Triathlon is the governing body of the sport of triathlon in the USA, part of the overall Olympic Committee, making USAT officially part of Team USA. This means that they must adhere to a strict set of rules put forth by the Olympic and Paralympic Committees. When you see that an event is “USAT Sanctioned” it means they have to complete a thorough application process drawing out all aspects of how they plan on conducting the event. Everything from permitting, to safety, to water quality, course design, and more! As a participant, seeing that an event is sanctioned by USAT should give you at least some confidence that the event is at least meeting the minimum standards concerning fairness of competition and overall safety of the competitors.
Annual Memberships or 1-Day Licenses to Race
In order to participate in a USAT-sanctioned event you must have a current USAT membership. This can be in the form of an annual or one day membership. Most registration platforms (we use RunSignup) automatically link to the USAT database to real time certify the validity of your membership status. During registration you will be asked for your USAT membership number. Once you input it you will be permitted to continue with your registration without any additional info or fee.
If you do not have a current membership you have two options:
- Option #1 - Purchase a $50 Annual Membership good for 365-days from the date of purchase
- Option #2 - Purchase a 1-Day $15 License good only for the race you’re registering for. If you plan on racing more than 3 times in the next 365-days, it’s worth purchasing the annual license.
Please Note: this fee and license (annual or 1-day) does not go to the race. This fee is to help pay for the events insurance, national ranking system, education of coaches, directors, and officials, etc.
Most adult triathlons in the United States are sanctioned by USA Triathlon. This helps the individual event. It also helps keep the national governing body strong so that it can support race directors, growth of the sport initiatives, and Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
Participant benefits of a USAT-sanctioned event:
- Access to the collective wisdom of over 35,000 sanctioned events over the past 30-years.
- Giving the peace-of-mind with industry-wide Safety Standards.
- Ensuring a fair race governed under industry-wide Competitive Rules.
- Providing the Gold Standard of event insurance for the event, athlete, and venue.
- Regional and national points and ranking system awarding annual designation of USA Triathlon All-American status.
- Opportunity to qualify for the National Championships and then possibly the World Championships as a member of Team USA.
USAT-Certified Race Director (Level 2)
USA Triathlon has a Race Director Certification program that goes above the standard sanctioning process. Those Race Directors who choose to become certified go through approximately 16 hours of coursework and complete an exam. They are required to recertify every two years and complete a background check through NCSI and take SafeSport training. The recertification and coursework ensures that the race director remains current in their knowledge and engaged in the triathlon community. There are two levels of Race Director Certifications.
Aaron Palaian of ÖTILLÖ SWIMRUN is a USAT LEVEL 2 Race Director, the most difficult to obtain. Only the most qualified reach this level. He was one of the first to receive this certification and has since used his knowledge and experience to produce events all over the USA, and world (Texas, Maine, Michigan, Washington State, Alaska, Hawaii, and Iceland) for the last 15-years.
