ARCHIVE 2020 Going Virtual
Sent 12/03/2020
Dear Runners,
This is not the pre-race email that we thought we’d be sending. No, this is the email that no Race Director ever wants to send: We are forced to cancel the Perpetual Motion 2020 in-person events.
We are just sick over this, especially after trying so hard to hold it, and we are so sorry for all the inconvenience this will cause.
We will move all runners to the Perpetual Virtual event, and will send out instructions to all runners tomorrow.
What happened? While Fair Park discusses all events with the City of Dallas for public safety reasons, events at Fair Park do not require Special Events permits from the City. This was a major factor in our decision to relocate the race from Grapevine to Fair Park 2 weeks ago, when Grapevine declined to take final action on our permit application.
However, after initially okaying the race, the City has decided that it requires sign-off from the Mayor / City Manager under TX Governor Abbot’s ‘Outdoor Gathering’ rules. Fair Park’s Management company, Spectra (aka Comcast/Spectracor) disagrees, and have involved their attorneys.
Spectra called us at 4:45 PM yesterday (Wednesday) to tell us about this development; we gave them 24 hours to get it resolved. Despite an appeal to the Governor's office for clarification and a 90-minute extension for a last-minute meeting with the Mayor, the City hasn’t budged. Spectra and the City will continue to talk, because this policy change affects all of the events in Fair Park, but we can’t hold a race that’s in legal limbo. We have no choice but to cancel.
Will there be refunds? Our COVID-19 policy does not allow for refunds at this late date since we’ve already incurred all of our expenses. All runners will be moved to a Perpetual Virtual event, and will receive the swag for the race they were registered for. All runners will also receive a 25% discount on Perpetual Motion 2021; we’re extending this discount code to include Perpetual Motion 2022 instead. For more detail, please see our policy here: https://runsignup.com/Race/WRATHRacing/Page-12
What about swag? Runners will receive all of their swag: the Quarter-Zip Logo Shirt; Health Kit; color-changing Logo Grip Water Bottle; Hammer Bag (with Endurolytes, Speed Cup, Gels, and Recoverite); Flashlight or RunRag, Bib, and Finisher’s Medal. Runners who purchased the Table/Chair rental package will be contacted separately about their options.
We’ll start packing swag this weekend for shipment starting on Thursday 12/10; and intend to have it all to USPS by Monday 12/14. Please email us if you don’t want your swag or if you want your tracking number, and please bear in mind that package delivery can be very slow this time of year.
What next? Please join us next December for Perpetual Motion 2021. We hope and pray that by then, things will be more normal and we’ll be able to all gather safely in Grapevine for a fun race. We’ll try to open registration in February or March.
Sincerely,
Kay & John

Race week is almost here! There is a lot of information to cover, we alphabetized it for easier reference. The COVID-related changes and policies are indicated by asterisks.
** AID STATION BEVERAGES:
- The Beverage Station is separate from the Aid Station tent. To reduce congestion at the Beverage table, please use the side corresponding to your cohort (see COHORTS.)
- There will be single-serving-sized packets of Heed, Fizz and other sports drinks.
- There will be bottles of G2 and water, and mini sodas.
- There will be self-service jugs of Heed and water. If you do not feel comfortable using the same jug as other runners, choose one of the single-serving options above.
- This is a “low cup” race. Runners will receive a cup and a bottle in their goody bag.
- Your bottle can be left on the table so you have easy access to it every kilometer
- Aid Station beverages are for registered participants only
** AID STATION GRAB-N-GO FOOD:
- For quick refueling, the Grab-n-Go table will be kept stocked with a selection of individually packaged chips, cookies, candy, gels, etc
** AID STATION HOT BEVERAGES:
- Hot water is always available
- Hot beverage station will have Hot Broth, Coffee and Ginger Tea after dark.
** AID STATION HOT FOOD:
- ** Please enter the side of the Aid Station tent that corresponds to your cohort (See COHORTS).
- Aid Station Tent will have 4 microwaves, 2 per cohort.
- Depending upon your comfort level, you (or your crew) may make your own meals from a selection of heat-n-eat products, or ask the volunteers to make it for you.
- Soup selections (Vegan) will include G/F Potato, Vegetable Noodle, Thai/Vegetable Noodle, & Tomato/Vegetable Noodle. Non-soup selections will include Mac N Cheese, Oatmeal, & Chef Boyardee products
- ** Limit 10 total people, including volunteers, in the Aid Station tent at one time.
- Aid Station food is for registered participants only
AWARDS:
- Each participant who completes at least 1 lap receives an Artisan-made medal. If you leave early, make sure you stop by the Aid Station to get your medal!
- Each participant that runs 100+ miles receives a buckle.
- 1st, 2nd, 3rd place receive a crystal award. (Engraved label with placement and mileage will be sent approximately 3-5 weeks after the race.)

CAMPING / PERSONAL SHELTERS / RVs:
- Unfortunately, there is no overnight camping at Fair Park prior to the event.
- You may set up your personal shelters anywhere around the Esplanade Fountain, starting at 4:00 PM on Friday, December 4. We have dedicated security from 6PM on Friday until 12PM on Sunday.
- IMPORTANT: NO STAKES. Please sandbag or weigh down all shelters.
- All shelters should be removed by 3:00 PM on Sunday, December 6.
- No cooking or open flames, please.
- Unfortunately, there is no overnight RV parking at Fair Park prior to the event. There are no RV hookups.
** CHECK-IN:
- Check-In consists of the following 3 elements in this order, and will ONLY be available on race morning
1. Temperature Check: A volunteer will take your temperature, and tell you if it’s okay (Yellow or Green.)
2. Health Attestation: You will sign the Health Attestation saying that you are not a COVID risk. A volunteer will give you a wristband.
3. Chip Pickup: You will pick up your chip. You cannot pick up your chip if you have not completed the Health Attestation.
- Runners do not need to wear the wristband while running. You just get one so that Timing knows you’ve signed the Health Attestation.
- Runners whose temperature is RED will be asked to step aside to cool down for 3-5 minutes before rechecking their temperature.
- IMPORTANT: If a runner/volunteer/crewperson/spectator receives 4 RED readings, they will be asked to leave for the safety of everyone else. (Runners will receive a full refund plus a 25% discount for Perpetual Motion 2021.) This could be very awkward for everyone involved, so PLEASE, if you feel sick, do not come to Perpetual Motion. Email Kay.WRATHRacing@yahoo.com to discuss your options.
** COHORTS:
- To limit the number of people congregating in any one area, we have instituted cohorts for Packet Pickup, Check-In, Aid Station and Beverage Station and the 9AM start
- Your cohort is based upon your last name: Alpha Cohort A-L and Zeta Cohort M-Z
COURSE:
- We will switch directions every 6 hours: 3:00 PM; 9:00 PM; and 3:00 AM.
- If you leave the course at any time, please complete the lap you are on in the same direction before switching.
- There are 4+ trashcans on the course; please use them :)
DEFERRALS / CHANGES:
- The deferral window is open until November 29th.
- The event transfer window is open until December 3rd.
- Race changes to the Perpetual Virtual can be done at any time, up to the start of your race (just let the RD or Timer know.)
FRIENDS & FAMILY:
- ** Friends and family that come to Fair Park to come cheer you on or crew for you will be required to have their temperatures taken and sign the Health Attestation. Please see the process under CHECK-IN.
-** Non-Runners are expected to wear their Health Attestation wristband so we can easily see who has signed and who hasn’t (so we don’t keep asking the same people over and over.)
- Your friends and family may run/walk up to one lap with you. Any more than that, and they should sign a pacer waiver.
- Friends and family may be driving on the same road as we are running on. Please ensure they drive courteously.
- Aid Station food and drinks are for registered participants and registered volunteers only.
LIGHTING:
- Sunset 5:22 PM; Sunrise 7:17 AM; Moonrise 10:18 PM; Moonset 12:20 PM
- Headlamps or other lights are recommended; 12-hour and 24-hour runners will receive a flashlight in their goody bag.
- There will be a lot of lights on the course (Assuming all lights are in working order.)
** MASKS & SOCIAL DISTANCING:
- Per Dallas County health ordinances, please wear your mask anytime you are indoors. This includes the restrooms, but not the Aid Station tent.
- Per USATF guidelines, Masks should be worn during packet pickup, Check-In, when gathering in the race corrals, during the Awards ceremony or any time when Social Distancing/6 feet cannot be maintained.
- Also per USATF guidelines, we do not need to ‘mask up’ when passing other runners, because the course is wider than 12’.
- All runners will receive a disposable mask in their goody bag.
PACERS:
- Per USATF rules, runners who are in contention for a record or podium placement may not have pacers.

- All pacers need to sign a Pacer Waiver (available at the main Aid Station)
- Pacers should bring their own aid. The aid stations are for registered runners only.
- Please yield the inside lane to faster runners, this may result in the pacing in front of or behind the runner.
PACKET PICKUP:
- At race location Friday, Dec 6 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
- At race location Saturday, Dec 7 starting at 6:00 AM
- ** When picking up your packet, please enter the side of the tent that corresponds to your cohort.
- Limit 10 total people, including volunteers, in the packet pickup tent at one time.
PARKING:

PRERACE / POSTRACE:
- There is no organized pre-race dinner. Feel free to organize something informal within the Facebook event!

- Restrooms will be sanitized on a regular basis.
- Please comply with all signage and instructions from the Fair Park custodial staff.
TIMING & RECORDS:
- The race will be chip-timed two ways for accuracy: timing chip on the race bib and chip-timed with an ankle strap. Both must be worn at all times. The race bib timing chips are keyed to the online live results, while the ankle chip is the backup system.
- Please yield the inside lane to faster participants.
- Please be sure to turn in your ankle chip before you leave the park!
- If you are seeking to set a record or meet a qualifying mark, please let the RDs or Mike Melton (Timer) know so we can make sure all the I’s are dotted and T’s are crossed.
- We will count partial laps. About 10 minutes before your race ends, you will be given a flag with your number on it. Plant it where you are at the time the race ends (as signified by a blast of the air horn.)
- Links to live results and results live stream will be posted when available.
VOLUNTEERS:
- We can always use volunteers! If your friends or family come to spectate, let us put them to work!
- ** Volunteers and Staff are required to complete the Health Attestation.
- ** Volunteers and Staff should wear masks and gloves whenever they are interacting with anyone. We provide gloves, of course!
WEATHER:
- Per the long-range forecast, High of 57 on Saturday, with a chilly (36*), potentially rainy overnight.
- Long range forecast shows moderate winds with strong gusts, but the course is well protected by trees and buildings.

ARCHIVE FAQs fp
COURSE:
Is Perpetual Motion USATF Sanctioned? Yes, Sanction #TX 20-26-075
Is the course USATF certified? Yes, certification # TX20018LAB
What is the course like? The course is mostly flat. It's primarily pebbled concrete, with some flat concrete and brick cobbled sections. It's got a lot of shade. Check out the cool 3D depiction of the course on the Race Info page!
Where can I see a video of the course? We hope to have one up soon!
Will I need lights? We always recommend lights. This year's race won't have a lot of moonlight, but if the night is clear, the lights on the course may be enough for some runners.
What are the course records? There are none! This is your chance to set a course record!
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Is there an official Race Hotel? Not this year. Check out this link for hotels recommended by Fair Park: https://www.fairpark.org/visit/where-to-stay
Is there a bag check or other place where I can put my things? We don't provide a spot for you to drop your stuff (unless you buy the Table & Chair rental add-on for $30) but you are welcome to make your own home base - you can bring tables, chairs, tents, canopies, etc. There are also picnic tables along the course that you can claim.
**IMPORTANT** No stakes can be used on Fair Park property. Tents and canopies must be weighted/sandbagged in place, not staked. This is to protect the Park's irrigation system.
What about the Kantina, the Courtesy Tent or one of the other race tents? We ask that you not leave your things in the Kantina, Registration or Medical tents. These tents can get pretty crowded, drinks and soups get spilled, people trip on other people's things, etc. Not good.
Where and when can I set up my tent or canopy? Personal tents and shelters can be set up anywhere on the inside or outside of the loop, starting at 4PM on Friday. They should be removed by 1PM on Sunday.
WEATHER:
What's the weather like? The average High temperature for this weekend is 62*, and the average Low temperature is 41*, but the weather in December in Texas can be unpredictable: hot, cold, sunny, overcast, still, windy, and sometimes all of those within 24 hours. Because of the shade from the buildings and trees, the 'Feels Like' temperature may be cooler during the day. We recommend that you pack for all possibilities, and look for weather updates in the final pre-race email.
Under what circumstances might the race be cancelled? The race could be cancelled due to a severe weather event that causes dangerous conditions, or at the request of local authorities
REFUNDS AND TRANSFERS:
Can I get a refund if I won't be racing for some reason? We don't offer full or partial refunds, except as outlined in our COVID policy.
Can I transfer my registration to someone else? Yes, you can; there is no charge prior to October 1. After October 1, the recipient will pay a $15 transfer fee that will cover any fees the race may incur.
MISCELLANEOUS:
Is there an early start? Unfortunately, we can't accommodate an early start this year.
Are there any discounts? Yes, there is a Marathon Maniac discount on the MM Calendar page.
I'm a Marathon Maniac. What if my race doesn't get 15 starters? You're in luck! The Maniacs clarified their criteria; we just need 15 starters for all 3 races combined.
What are the GPS coordinates? 32.781478, -96.762094

ARCHIVE VIRTUAL Rules / Posting Results
Dear Runners,
All of you should have been transferred into the Virtual Race that corresponds to your In-Person distance: 6-Hour Perpetual Motion => 6-Hour Perpetual Virtual, etc. The system should have sent you an email when it completed the transfer. If we transferred you incorrectly or if you would like to drop-down to a different distance please let us know: Kay.WRATHRacing@yahoo.com
** Good News: We have 18 beautiful heavy crystal awards just sitting here, so we will be giving awards 3 deep male/female for each virtual event. Shipping crystal gives me ulcers, but there is no point in letting them go to waste **
Here are the rules for the Virtual as we've got them in the system right now.
1) You can run anytime between November 21, 2020 and January 3rd, 2021. This revised time period gives one month for all of the runners that were transferred from the In-Person races to the Virtual race.
2) The race must be completed within a 6-hour, 12-hour or 24-hour period. So if you start the 12-hour race at 3:04P on Monday, your Perpetual Virtual will be complete at 3:03:59A on Tuesday.
3) All runs within a 6-hour, 12-hour or 24-hour period will count towards your total. If there is more than one run and the system won't let you upload them all, email all the links to kay.wrathracing@yahoo.com
4) You need to report your time and mileage by end of day on January 4, 2021. If you miss the window, email us and we can help, but it may be too late to be eligible for awards.
5) To be eligible for awards, your mileage and time need to be verified. It does not need to be Garmin/Strava, etc (though that helps) as long as we can determine your start time/end time and total mileage. For instance, if you are 'double-dipping' the 6-hour with a 50K, you can send us the link to the 50K results. Photos of your watch may be eligible if they contain the required data.
6) If you aren't interested in awards, then you can enter your results without data to back them up.
7) Minimum mileage to be considered a "Finisher" is 1 mile.
8) We want to share your experience! Post your photos in the Facebook group or on IG. Use #HowIHammer
How to upload results:
A) Go to the Results page on RunSignUp. Click on the "Submit Virtual Results" button at the top of the screen.

B) If you are logged in, the system will take you straight to the entry screen. If you aren't logged in, enter your information, and follow the prompts until you get to the entry screen.
C-1) Enter your total time and total mileage. OR
C-2) If you are on a desktop, this screen will also have the option to "Load Activities From File". Connect your GPS to the computer using an USB cable and drag the file to the blue square on the left.
E) Choose Submit
F) Once the submission period is over after January 4, we'll request data for verification from the top 5 runners in each category, so we can determine who gets the awards. This proof is usually a link to your Garmin/Strava/RunKeeper. etc. If you don't have these but want to be considered for an award, please email Kay.WRATHRacing@yahoo.com to discuss your options. Remember, we only need proof of your run if you want to be eligible for an award.
This is the first Virtual we've hosted, so we're more than open to constructive criticism, and especially to ideas on how to make it fun for everyone. Have fun and stay safe!

FAQs & Answers
COURSE:
Is Perpetual Motion USATF Sanctioned? Yes, USATF sanction 22-26-141526
Is the course USATF certified? Yes, certification TX15110ETM (expires 2025)
What is the course like? The loop is an elongated oval. The two long sides are flat and straight; the two rounded ends have some slope to them. There are no sharp turns.
Where can I see a video of the course?
There are a few on YouTube. Watch this one OR this one
Will I need lights? We always recommend lights. This year's race won't have a lot of moonlight, but if the night is clear, the moon and the streetlights may illuminate the course enough for some runners.
What are the course records? These are the best performances of the ten events held on this course (UltraCentric '15, PseudoCentric '16, Perpetual Motion '17 - '19, & Perpetual Motion '21 - '25)
- 24 Hour: (M) Greg Armstrong '17 151.05 miles (F) Rebecca Cunningham '17 103.41 miles
- 12 Hour: (M) Robert McElroy '17 71.69 miles (F) Johanna Wender '25 70.08 miles
- 6 Hour: (M) Daniel Miller '25 44.24 miles (F) Katie Graff '15 41.12 miles
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Is there an official Race Hotel? Not this year. However, Grapevine has a lot of great hotels to meet every budget: https://www.grapevinetexasusa.com/
Is there a bag check or other place where I can put my things? We don't provide a spot for you to drop your stuff (unless you buy the Table & Chair rental add-on for $30) but you are welcome to make your own home base - people bring tables, chairs, tents, canopies, etc. Some just use their cars, which can be parked along the outside of the course.
What about the Cantina, the Courtesy Tent or one of the other race tents? We ask that you not leave your things in the Cantina, Registration or Medical tents. These tents can get pretty crowded, drinks and soups get spilled, people trip on other people's things, etc. Not good. If there is an unsold spot in the Courtesy tent, we may offer that space for general use, especially in the event of inclement weather. However, we are not responsible for any items stored there.
Where and when can I set up my tent or canopy? Personal tents and shelters can be set up anywhere on the inside or outside of the loop, starting at 4PM on Friday. They should be removed by 3PM on Sunday.
WEATHER:
What's the weather like? The average High temperature for this weekend is 62*, and the average Low temperature is 41*, but the weather in December in Texas can be unpredictable: hot, cold, sunny, overcast, still, windy, and sometimes all of those within 24 hours. Because of the proximity of the lake, the course usually has a breeze and will feel cooler than the forecast indicates, especially at night.
No, we don't offer full or partial refunds.
Can I transfer my registration to someone else? Can I defer it to next year? Yes and Yes. For more information on transfers, deferrals, etc, please see WRATH Racing's standard policies.
MISCELLANEOUS:
Is there an early start? Unfortunately, we can't accommodate an early start.
Are there any discounts? Yes, there is a Marathon Maniac discount on the MM Calendar page.
What are the GPS coordinates? 32.959208,-97.056219

Virtual Awards
We'll give awards for virtual categories with 5 or more runners. To be eligible for awards, we must be able to verify your time and distance. Once the submission period is over, we'll request data for verification from the top runners in each category, so we can determine who gets the awards. (Note that we do not have access to gpx files that were uploaded to RunSignup.)
What is 'proof'? It's usually a link to your Garmin/Strava/RunKeeper. etc, but it can be something else, as long as we can determine your start time/end time and total mileage. For instance, if you are 'double-dipping' the 6-hour with a 50K, you can send us the link to the 50K results. Photos of your watch may be eligible if they contain the required data.
Remember, we only need proof of your run if you want to be eligible for an award.
