About Philly Mayor's Cup

This is the Mayor's Cup: Runners from each and every Philadelphia community - fast runners and slow runners, trail runners and road runners, ultra-runners and 5K specialists, competitors and volunteers - coming together to represent the "team" they call their own.

5 Events, held on a single day, with a single start/finish line.  Clubs from all over the city, coming together for competition and socialization: if you do not have the password for your club (or want to find a new club so that you can get involved), all club contact information can be found here.

There are no individual winners.  The top male and female from each club, in each race, will earn points (based on ranking) for their club.  The winning club will be the Mayor's Cup Champion.

May the Best Club Win.

The Mayor's Cup was born out of a simple observation: Philadelphia has a tremendous network of local Running Clubs that challenge, motivate, and inspire allegiance from their runners.

Each race distance has a separate start time. Please verify your start time!

All registrations require a password from your club - if you do not know the password for your club, please contact your Team Captain via the information in their club page (here).

About Us

The Philly Mayor’s Cup was born over post-run beers among friends. From there, it has grown into a registered Non-Profit through the hard work and volunteer effort of many within the Philadelphia Running Community. In addition to the irreplaceable Team Captains, these are the faces behind the Philly Mayor’s Cup:

Founders

ImageAnthony LoCicero (CEO):
In addition to co-founding Philly Mayor’s Cup, Anthony’s hobbies include running with friends and making sawdust. He considers his personal best achievement to be putting up with Johanna for 29.5 hours at the 2014 Viaduct Ultramarathon. He is also very thankful that his wife lets him spend so much time organizing this race.

ImageJohanna Goode (COO):
When she’s not at work at RunSignUp, Johanna can be found running any available trails (or roads, in a pinch), reading, eating frosting, and organizing adventures for her unsuspecting victims (“friends”). Her talents include eating spicy food, sleeping in a crowded room, and falling down at least once a week

Board of Directors:

ImageJudith Sznyter (President):
Attorney Judith brings her organization and knack for creating fun to the Philly Mayor’s Cup Board. In her real life, she spends her time cooking masterpieces (the woman knows her vegetables), knitting in bars (or anywhere), leading up softball teams, and traveling the world with co-conspirator Carolyn.

ImageDavid Maver (Treasurer):
David Maver is a longtime member of the Fishtown Beer Runners and treasurer for the Philly Mayor’s cup. A runner for a long time, he caught a serious running bug in 2010 when he started running marathon after marathon with Race Director Anthony LoCicero. In between marathons, and even some of the nights before, Dave can be found working as an intensive care nurse at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in West Philly.

Kevin Brandon (Member at Large): Kevin joined us as a captain of the Philadelphia Runner Track Club, and is the resident speedster of the Mayor's Cup team.

Liz Pagonis (Director at Large): A captain of Team Philly, Liz is something of a celebrity in the Philadelphia running community and, as a representative of Philadelphia Runner, a trusted resource for all things running. When she’s not running, she likes big books, hidden cabins with porch swings, hammocks, craft brews, and cheese. She’s a fan of Philly, but not afraid to wander off for far-away adventures.

CFO

ImageDima Kreminskiy:
Dima lends his financial advice and saavy, detailed evaluation of procedure to the Philly Mayor’s Cup team. More cyclist-than-runner for much of his adult life, Dima impressed friends with his speedy ascent in running when he took the plunge into training for his first marathon. A native of Odessa, Ukraine, Point Breeze is now home for him, his daugher Ilana, his wife Mary, and his slightly haughty cat Nastia.

Other Contributors

ImageKate Bosco McDevitt (Logo Design):
A Fishtown Beer Runner, Kate regularly surprises unsuspecting runners with her speedy ascent of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. She pitched in her free time to design the original, seen-all-over-town Philly Mayor’s Cup logo; more of her design work can be found on her website: http://kboscodesign.com/

ImageJim Benson (Marketing/Graphic Design):
Jim is an Art Director with over ten years experience in graphic design and web development. He first got involved with the Philadelphia running community (and running in general) when he joined the Fishtown Beer Runners back in 2008. He can be found on the interweb @jimsonofben or http://www.jimsonofben.com/.

ImageChristina George (Marketing Material Production):
In addition to helping set up aid stations a dark o’clock in the morning, Christina is an Interior Designer who counts a famous author as one of her clients. She’s also responsible for much of the race signage you see, and the Race Director’s signature hats.

Photo Contributors

ImageElizabeth Encarnacion:
A children’s book editor/author and Program Director of the Spell’s Writing Lab, Liz and her camera are a staple at running events around Philadelphia. She can be spotted on the sidelines of marathons, 5K’s, and trail races, poised to snap a picture of familiar and not-so-familiar runners alike. She’s responsible for at least half your running friend’s profile pictures!

ImageLibby Maver:
The sister of runner and Board Member Dave Maver, Libby is an Early Education student at Temple University. She’s been snapping photos for years, and is a repeat photographer for a variety of Fishtown Beer Runners events throughout the years.

ImageJames Goode:
James has spent decades photographing distant landscapes, foreign cities, and the family and friends around him. He pulled double (or quadruple?) duty on race day 2015, photographing several races, driving the official race van at 4am, directing runners, and racing the 5K himself.

ImageMike Searer (Member at Large):
Mike is a reluctant runner, sometimes better recognized as a gigantic bull, Obi-Wan Kenobi, or Blitzen the Reindeer. He can be found offering (un)professional therapy sessions, playing pool, and providing late-morning coffee to weary Philadelphians. In addition to his work on the Board, Mike provided hundreds of high quality photos to the 2015 Mayor’s Cup runners.

And help from our friends at the Fairmount Park Conservancy, Mark Elsasser and the rest of the Belmont  Plateau Trails Alliance, Tim Krueger & Joe Berta at Run The Day, previous Board Members Carolyn Redmond, Michael Pidgeon, David April, Anthony Wojciechowski, and all the Race Day Volunteers.

Belmont Plateau

The history of Belmont Plateau - the Crown Jewel of Cross Country Running in Philadelphia

One of the draws for bringing the Philly Mayors Cup to Belmont Plateau is the storied running history, and the herculean efforts of a few individuals to continue that tradition. Although the specific course changed a few times, the plateau was home to premier high school and college cross country races for decades, as well as a USA National Championship to celebrate the bicentennial in 1976. Over the years, the course suffered from significant erosion problems, and the wooden signage faded to nothing.

The Keepers of the Course

Starting in 2012, Dave Thomas of the Philadelphia Athletic Charities reached out to the City of Philadelphia for help, and began a major initiative to restore the course to its former glory. The color-coded signage you see marking the cross country courses today is the result of that effort, and the continued work of Dave Thomas. Philadelphia Parks & Recreation employee George McNally maintains the course, with funding for the equipment and stone & gravel supplied by funds from the Blue Cross Broad Street Run.

The Belmont Plateau Cross Country Hall of Fame and 5K

The Belmont Plateau Cross Country Hall of Fame evolved from the Philadelphia Athletic Charities, with a mission to preserve and promote the sport of cross country in the Philadelphia area and the iconic courses at Belmont Plateau Park.

You can learn more about the Belmont Plateau Cross Country Hall of Fame and the running icons who raced there at their website here

To support the Belmont Plateau Cross Country Hall of Fame, and the continued maintenance of the cross country courses, come out for the Belmont Plateau Hall of Fame Classic (a 5K and a 1 mile youth run)! The 2019 race will be held on August 24th.

Ben Franklin Mob Hash House Harriers

Image

Club Name: Ben Franklin Mob Hash House Harriers

Club Information:

A drinking club with a running problem! The Ben Franklin Mob Hash House Harriers (BFMH3) is the Philadelphia-based chapter of the Hash House Harriers, a worldwide group of non-competitive running social clubs. We [kinda] run, following a puzzle-like trail marked by one of us (called the hare for the evening) every Thursday night somewhere in the city of Philadelphia. Runs typically last about an hour and a half (with plenty of stops) covering 3-5 miles. We begin and end each run at a bar because we like beer. Some of us also like running. We’re not competitive about running, though some of us are competitive runners; we’re not competitive about drinking beer either, though many of us are better at that than running. At the bar we “circle up” to socialize, sing bawdy songs, and cause a general ruckus, all in the name of the fight against sobriety and to persuade the older members that they are not as old as they feel.

Run Information:

Every Thursday night, rain or shine, 7:00pm with meet up locations rotating within the city.

Find Your Club

Participating Clubs are ones that meet three key criteria:

  • Running is a primary purpose of the club
  • The club meets regularly, primarily within the city boundaries of Philadelphia
  • The club exists for reasons beyond participation in the Philly Mayor's Club.

Each club entry is organized by a Team Captain, and renews it's membership in the Philly Mayor's Cup on an annual basis. All Team Captain's agree to adhere to the spirit of the competition:

Kids (Almost) Mile Fun Run

New in 2018!

Children (10 and under) associated with any participating runners (or volunteers) at the race can participate in an untimed 0.9ish mile fun run around the full loop of Belmont Plateau.

While participants in the fun run will not score for the team, the intention is to get kids involved in the fun of running and show them how much fun running can be when surrounded by a supportive team.

The associated adult does not have to be a parent (Aunts, grandparents, family friends are fine), but a guardian must register the child and sign the waiver for them. Kids will full names are not be visible on registration lists. Kids are encouraged to run on the own (the course will be marked with cones, and volunteers around the plateau), but an adult may accompany their kids if needed.

Lez Run/Philadelphia Front Runners

Image

Club Name: Lez Run & Philadelphia Front Runners

Club Information:

Lez Run: Lez Run was created for all members of the LGBTQ community, their friends and family. Our group welcomes all skill levels from beginner to pro! We meet 2x per week, Wednesdays and Sundays, rain or shine, but within reason :). Wednesdays we meet in the city at 2300 Market St at 6:15pm and will do up to 4 miles in distance. Sunday runs will vary in location and distance. Please check our posts for more info. We aim to run local, out of state and out of the country races to represent our community and show off our skills! We will train together for upcoming races and help each other reach personal goals. Besides running, we also like to socialize and will meet for happy hours, pasta dinners, and after run brunches. Please keep in mind we are not a dating site, but runners are hot so we understand if it happens. Our focus is to provide lgbtq athletes (newbies and vets) a safe, supportive, and healthy outlet via running. FInally, a place where you can freely talk about losing a toenail, chafing cream, carbo loading, cold weather running, Garmin watches, and that strange feeling you get when you miss a run. So grab your running sneaks but leave your inhibitions at home and join us because running just got gayer!

Philadelphia Front Runners: Philadelphia Front Runners is a running club serving the LGBT+ community and our allies in the greater Philadelphia area since 1983. As a chapter of the international organization of Front Runners, our name stems from the 1974 novel “The Front Runner”, a depiction of queer life within the running community. We aim to cultivate an inclusive & safe space while fostering the passion for running that we all share – essentially, our mission is to be gay (in both the “queer” and “happy” sense) and run. We meet every Monday night at 7:00pm at the William Way Center and every Saturday morning at 9:30am at Lloyd Hall, and welcome runners (and walkers!) of all paces. Whether you’re training for a marathon PR and can’t stand another 20 mile run alone, wanting to look toned in that fabulous dress you plan on wearing at your next drag show, or even just feeling a little run-curious, we’d love for you to come out and run with us!

Philadelphia Races: Status Updates

Link: Philadelphia Area Race Status List

With the Coronavirus impacting races across our region, we want to help the community sort out what is happening, and when. A few caveats about this resource:

  • This is a dynamic situation, and the calendar is somewhat static. We are updating it as often as we can (last date of update is at the top), but use the linked race name to check websites for the most current status.
  • Race information can be located in a variety of places. If you have information that is new or different from what we found, please email us at phillymayorscup@gmail.com
  • We have no affiliation with these races. If you have questions about their process moving forward, please look on their linked website for contact information to reach the race directly.
  • We will expand into later dates as the situation progresses
  • Races listed are those that show as within 50 miles of Philadelphia

Definitions:

Current race statuses include:

  • Proceeding: The physical race is proceeding as originally planned
  • Converted to Virtual: The physical race has been converted to a virtual race. The specifics of virtual races can vary (contact the event for details about their race), but generally allow for participants to run a pre-determined distance at any location, often over a range of days. Virtual races often include results, swag, and social media groups for encouragement and the sharing of accomplishment. While it's not the same as a physical race, a virtual race can allow you to participate in an event with a friend or family member that you're currently separated from.
  • Postponed: The race is being moved to a new date, either with or without a confirmed new date
  • Cancelled: The race will not occur in 2020.
  • Uncertain: The race has acknowledged that the situation is likely to impact their race, but has not yet made a determination about moving forward.
  • No Updates: The race has not indicated if/how they will change their event

Any updates can be sent to phillymayorscup@gmail.com. Updates will be made as time allows; if we have not yet gotten to your race date, please understand that we will update the list in order of race date.

Philly Mayor's Cup Virtual Edition: FAQ

This FAQ covers general questions about participating in the 2020 virtual event. To view an FAQ for a specific Challenge Week, visit their specific pages:

Club Membership and Participation

Why is it asking me for a password?

Philly Mayor's Cup is built as a team competition. The virtual edition, like the physical one, requires participation with a club - and your club has the password. Just check their social media or website (found on the club information pages here) and contact the club or club captain directly if their password isn't shared publicly.

I just moved here, and haven't run with the club yet because there haven't been any group runs. Can I still register with them?

Yes! Club membership for most of our clubs is loosely defined as anyone who comes to the runs. But if you have not yet gotten the chance to run with them physically, we hope that participating digitally will help you to connect with a local group virtually.

What about family/friends of the club?

Sure. If you have family and friends who want to participate in your online engagement and be a part of the club from afar, send them the password and let them join. The same goes for former members who have moved away.

Registration Questions

Do I have to register each week?

No. Your registration will get you entry to each of the four weeks of challenges, including the option to do any/all of the distances on Week 4.

If I register, do I have to participate every week?

No. We think you should (you're automatically registered each week), but if you're busy or just don't want to do one of the challenges, there's no penalty for your club. The answer is the same for a club - we think it's a good opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and do something a little different as a club. But if you choose to skip a week, that's up to you!

What's the cost of each week?

There's just one registration fee ($10) for every runner. This automatically enters you into every week. We have a few administrative costs to cover, still (like insurance), but are keeping the registration as low as possible since most of our costs will be null this year. If we get more than enough runners to cover our costs, we will donate any additional proceeeds between our charities.

I can't afford to participate this year, but want to stay connected with my club.

No problem. We know a lot of people are struggling financially right now, and our main priority is helping club members connect and stay active. Just email us at phillymayorscup@gmail.com and we will send you a coupon code to register, no questions asked.

Scoring and Fairness

How do you verify that runners really complete the runs that they say they do?

We have a few checks, but for the most part, we don't. This is an event to celebrate the Philadelphia running community - no one would dare be a jerk and cheat at something with such low stakes. We will ask the scoring runners for Speed Week to submit verification (GPS from a watch or phone app, treadmill data, etc), as well as requiring the runner to be in each of the photos submitted for the scavenger hunt (at least partially), and reserve the right to ask for back-up for any results that are questioned. But basically, it's honor system, and don't be a jerk.

But...if our courses aren't all the same, how does winning count? What if it was hotter and more uphill when I ran?

Courses (and conditions) won't all be equal. You, and all your competitors, are welcome to try to find the fastest course and best conditions.

Does the run I submit have to be done during that week of the challenge, or can I use, for example, a 5K in July for my Speed Week submission?

All challenge runs must be done during the week of that Challenge (Saturday to Friday). You cannot count a race or run from earlier in the year.

Oops. I forgot to submit my miles and/or time.

All miles (for Distance Week) and times (for Speed Week) must be submitted by 11:59pm on the last day of the Challenge week to count. No exceptions. This also applies to submitting scanvenger hunt photos and artwork entries.

Safety

So...I'm just supposed to run by myself? What about water? Snacks? A medical team?

You're on your own! For a virtual event, there are no provisions or medical teams provided by the event. Please prepare and make sure you are always hydrated properly, understand your limitations, and are prepared to call for medical assistance if you need.

I want to win! I'm not stopping for anything, even cars.

All participants are expected to obey traffic rules and use caution at intersections, when running in the road, and when navigating near or around pedestrians or bikers.

Can we just all run together?

We don't know what July and August will look like, but all runners are expected to follow any local orders, as well as CDC guidelines during their participation. In the event of uncertainty, use extra caution and run alone (really, we recommend this regardless). Clubs that are not following local orders risk disqualification.

We put the word “Queer” at the forefront of everything we do. Many people view “Queer” as being a negative, derogatory term. The more we say it, the more you read it, the more the world hears it, the less derogatory it feels and the more empowering it becomes. We are not a bad word.

We are human.

Queer Run was established in April 2022 and is dedicated to creating safe spaces for LGBTQIA+ athletes and allies in the community. Inclusion and mental health are very important to us, and we welcome people from every background to join us.

Run Information:

Every Monday 7pm — Spring–Fall: Rittenhouse Square; Winter: William Way Community Center
Wednesdays 6pm — Manayunk Philly Runner
Thursdays 6am — Love Park Visitor Center

Getting to Belmont Plateau

Parking on the Plateau is very limited. When possible, we recommend alternative methods for getting out to the race:

  • Public Transportation: Several Septa bus routes run close to the park (including the 38, 40, 43, and 65), and the 15 will drop you off about 1 mile from the start line. Check Septa.org before race morning for any potential delays or detours.
  • Personal Bike: If you choose to ride your own bike out, leave a little extra time to find a safe spot to lock it up – there are options, but it can sometimes take a little creativity. If you have someone from your club watching the stuff at your area in the Athlete Village, you can ask them if they feel comfortable keeping your bike over there.
  • Uber/Lyft or Cabs: Cabs are relatively available in the city; from the park, you will need to either call one or utilize the Uber or Lyft Apps.

If you HAVE to drive (carpool, if possible), this is the situation:

  • There is public parking in a small lot on Belmont Mansion Rd, as well as in the Car Barn Lot off of Montgomery Drive (between Belmont Ave & MLK Drive). There are VERY limited spots in these lots; I recommend leaving plenty of time for an alternative option in case you cannot park in either.
  • Other options within a mile of the start can be found at the Horticultural Center (opens at 8:00am), as street parking by the  Please Touch Museum/Memorial Hall, or on N. Georges Hill Dr (by the Mann Center).
  • The Army Rd parking lot on Belmont Mansion Drive will be reserved for event staff and for Club Captains to distribute to the club members responsible for bringing their items for the Athlete Village. Cars will not be able to access (in or out) this lot between 6:20am and the close of race (11:00am); a parking permit will be required for access prior to 6:30am.

Athlete Village

This is where the running ends, and the celebration begins!

  • Pop up tents, blankets, etc, are encouraged for your comfort, but not required
  • Please make sure that your setup is not tearing up the grass or in any way damaging the property
  • Food and beverages are fair game (and highly recommended!) – we encourage sharing your surplus with other teams to get to know each other!
  • Please be respectful of any group electing not to have alcohol in their area
  • We are generally trusting of our running community, but you leave items in your group area at your own risk.

If you aren’t sure if you can do it in Fairmount Park, here are all the rules: Parks & Rec Rules

You can find a map of the Plateau (including parking lots, check-in area, and porta-potty locations) in the drop-down menu above.

The Races:

Race have staggered start times to allow most runners to end within 2 hours of each other. Start times:

Half Marathon Trail Race: 6:30am
10 Mile Road Race: 7:30am
10K Trail Race (Men): 8:15am*
10K Trail Race (Women & Non-Binary): 8:25am*
5 Mile Road Race: 8:45am
5K Cross Country: 9:15am
Kids Run: 10:30am

*The 10K will have a staggered start, with men starting 10 minutes prior to women & non-binary runners to reduce crowding on the single-track trails.

Race FAQ

Club Participation

Q: During my childhood growing up on Evergreen Terrace back in Springfield, my friends and I started a club in my treehouse called the No Homers Club.  We are still friends and have recently gotten into distance running.  Can the No Homers Club enter the Mayor’s Cup?

A: No, the Mayor’s Cup is only open to clubs based in Philadelphia with a primary purpose of running, and who exist for reasons other than to participate in the Mayor’s Cup.  If you feel your Club meets those requirements, please contact the Race Directors at phillymayorscup@gmail.com to set up your club.  As an aside, creating a club specifically to exclude Homer is rude.

Q: While competing in races, I like to dress as my favorite Star Wars character, R2-D2, to really emphasize my individuality.  Can I run in the Mayor’s Cup in my costume?

A: While we won’t prohibit you from running in costume, we would prefer that you dress like your Running Club (i.e., a Running Club Shirt) and show pride in your team.  Don’t be an ‘A’ hole.

Q: I’m a lunatic ultramarathoner who enjoys running multiple races on the same day.  Can I enter more than one event in the Mayor’s Cup?

A: Since the races occur simultaneously, it is not possible to enter more than one event.  Unless you are Jay Garrick. (Even if you think you can physically finish one race in time to start another, your score cannot count for your team twice).

Q: To prove my self-worth, I enjoy receiving medals for completing races.  Will I receive a medal for competing in the Mayor’s Cup?

A: No, individual awards will not be given out.  Instead, you will receive the pride of knowing that you gave your all to represent your running club.

Q: I ran too much in June, and plan to take the rest of the summer off...but I'm already registered. Can my friend run in my place?

A: Yes! But only if you transfer your registration to them by 8/6/2023. You can "gift" transfer your registration to a teammate - meaning any reimbursement needs to happen directly between the two of you - until that date.. For instructions on transferring your registration, follow the instructions here (look for the "Transfer as Gift" option): https://help.runsignup.com/support/solutions/articles/17000062921-transfer-to-another-runner

 Pre-Race Preparation

ImageQ: I signed up for the half marathon, but instead of training, I spent all spring eating pints of Rocky Road and watching reruns of women’s gymnastics from the 1992 Olympics.  I love Kim Zmeskal.  Can I get a refund on my registration fee?

A: I’m sorry but refunds are not offered.  If you don’t think you can do the half marathon, you can transfer to a less imposing distance (as long as the cap for that distance has not been reached), or transfer your spot to another runner.

Q: What happens if it rains?  What happens if it is hot out?

A: This is August.  It will probably be hot, and it could rain.  This event is rain, shine, or super-sunshine.  In the event of extreme weather beyond our control, we are at the mercy of the weather-Gods and the safety-decisions of Philadelphia Parks and Recreation for event adaptations or cancellations, and we will communicate any safety measures in a timely fashion.

Q: When and where can I pick up my packet?

A: Race Headquarters, starting 1 hour before the half marathon, and throughout the day.  Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your event.  Not every question and answer has to be funny!

Q: I plan to drive to the race.  Where should I park?

A: Parking in and around Belmont Plateau is extremely limited.  All runners are encouraged to use alternate transportation to get to the start line. SEPTA bus lines operate or terminate near northern West Fairmount Park. You can also run (warm up for a half marathon, anyone?), Uber, taxi, or bike to the start.

Q: Are strollers or dogs allowed in the Mayor’s Cup?

A: Unfortunately, no.  Due to the nature of the course, strollers and dogs are not permitted for safety reasons.

Q: Where should I go during Race Day if I have a questions?

A: Our Volunteer Race Day Captain will be manning our information table during The Mayor’s Cup at the Start/Finish area.  Visit him/her if you have questions, or just want a hug (hug availability will be at the discretion of the volunteer.)

Q: Is this Course Certified?  Will I set a PR?

A: No, the Mayor’s Cup courses will not be certified, and none of the courses are fast, flat courses.  That being said, it is possible that you will PR in the 6.27 mile distance. You can expect all courses to be close to advertised, but we think this is about racing other teams, not reaching for personal goals.

Q: What are the exact courses? Where are the Aid Stations?

A: You can find basic descriptions of each course, and approximate Aid Stations on The Mayor’s Cup Events Page.  Please check back closer to Race Day for course maps , more thorough descriptions, and specific locations for each Aid Station.

Q: What does my entry fee pay for?

A: Real talk: your entry fee pays for entry.  This race is focused on clubs, not sponsors.  We are doing everything we can to keep costs low, and charging entry fees to cover them.  We’re giving you the option of buying some so that you only pay for it if you want it, and we are not offering individual medals because you are competing for your team, not yourself.

Q: Is this Race accessible for athletes with disabilities?

A: It depends. While we are happy to offer guide spots to runners and are open to additional accommodations, there are some unavoidable elements of the courses that could be challenging for some athletes with disabilities. If you wish to participate as a wheelchair athlete or believe you might need some accommodations, please reach out to the race as early as possible to learn more about the courses and ensure time for a mutually acceptable plan for participation.

Post-Race Information

Q: After I race, I like a pint of Cookies & Cream Ice Cream and pretzels.  Will there be any available at the post-race party?Image

A: The post-race party will be a potluck hosted by the participating running clubs.  If you really want ice cream, you should talk your Team Captain into providing it.  And some spoons.

Q: After the race I will want to relax by laying out in the sun and reading a few chapters of War & Peace.  Can I check a bag containing a change of clothes, a book, and other gear?

A: While we are not offering a general bag-check area, we encourage you to talk with your Team Captain about a space to leave bags in your team’s area.

Q: How do I know that I won?

A: Results will be posted on-site and online as soon as they are available.  Please remember that while you will be able to find your individual finishing information, it’s the Team Scores that count here.

Q: Please help! I ran your so-called race, and I just checked the results and I am not listed.  Don’t you know how hard I trained for this?  You people are terrible.

A: Run The Day will be timing and scoring our race.  Unfortunately, technology is not 100% reliable, and the main timing mat could miss a chip.  There will be mistakes; please try not to panic.  There are back-ups in place; if you think there is an error, just contact Tim at Run The Day.

Alternate Types of Participation

ImageQ: Instead of running in the Mayor’s Cup, can I volunteer at packet pick-up or at a water stop?

A: Yes!  Thank you!  Thank you!  Volunteer registration will open in June.

Q: I am injured/out of shape/don’t want to run your race, but I want to come out and cheer on my fellow clubmates/the random girl I met at a bar.  Can I watch?

A: Yes! We highly encourage club members who are not competing to come out and cheer on the runners. Supporting your team IS participating with your team.  Non club-members are welcome to come out an cheer as well.  We encourage spectators to focus on the start/finish area so they can provide support to runners in all race distances.

The Rules

The Mayor’s Cup Championship (the Meet) is a competition to determine the top running club (Club) in the City of Philadelphia.  The Meet is composed of five running races of varying distances (Events) – 3.1 miles, 5 miles, 6.2 miles, 10 miles, and 13.1 miles.  Each Club may enter an unlimited number of Competitors into the Meet.  However, each Competitor may only run on behalf of one Club and may only enter one Event.

The competitor in each category (distance/age/participation type) from each Club to finish in each Event shall constitute a Club’s Scoring Competitors.  Each Scoring Competitor will be assigned a score equal to the number of Scoring Competitors from other Clubs of the same category who they finish before. The Club’s Score will be the sum of Scores of their Scoring Competitors.

In plain English, if 29 clubs enter a participant in the men's 10K, the first team gets 29 points, the second team gets 28 points, and so on. Categories include men's, women's, and non-binary options for each distance, with separate options for either running/walking or wheelchair participation. The number of points available in a given category depends on the number of clubs who enter that category.

May the Best Club Win.

Trail Sisters Philadelphia

Club Name: Trail Sisters Philadelphia

Club Information:

Our mission is to increase women’s participation and opportunity in trail running and hiking through inspiration, education and empowerment.

All our events are no drop. The Trail Sisters community welcomes and encourages inclusion from All who identify as women: our sisters of Color, our Indigenous sisters, our LGBTQIA sisters, our Trans and Non-Binary sisters, our Adaptive Athlete sisters and our White sisters.

Pace, size, shape, experience level, whether hiking, running, or racing, none of that matters. What does matter is that sisters are experiencing a valuable and enjoyable time on the trails, surrounded by those who are supportive and empowering.

No sisterhood is truly a sisterhood without diversity in every way, as each woman is unique, significant, and can provide strength, love, and support to her fellow sisters.

Run Information:

We have a regular Sunday morning run in the Wissahickon and Wednesday night hill repeats. As well as monthly long runs, special events and lots of friendly, casual meet ups.

WEEK 1: SCAVENGER HUNT

Overview:

The Scavenger Hunt list is on the PDF linked here. The club that finds the most items, or finds all the items the fastest, wins. Here's how it works:

When you find an item, upload it to your club's album in the Philly Mayor's Cup Facebook Group to get credit (or have a team member upload it for you). To upload the photo(s), you must be signed into Facebook and be a member of the group (join ASAP to prevent any delays!).

Click on the album for your club, and then click +Add Photos/Videos at the top of the album:

This will allow you to pick the photos to upload from your device. If you want to add more photos after you select the first one(s), then click on the rectangle with + Add Photos to pick the photo(s) to upload:

Eligibility Requirements:

- Your photo MUST have some part of you in it (face, running shoes, club shirt, etc)
- Your photo upload MUST be labeled with the corresponding item number in the scavenger hunt list. You can enter the number in the highlighted space when you upload the photo:

- Your photo MUST be taken on a run (or walk, if you usually walk for exercise instead of running) between 7/11-7/17/20 (11:59pm). Previously taken photos are ineligible.
- Only ONE of each numbered item counts for your team. To ensure we can count your items correctly, avoid uploading duplicates.
- If/when your club finishes the challenge, comment with "Finished" on the album so we know to verify completion as quickly as possible.
-  If possible, drag the photos (just click into the album, click on the photo, and move their position once they are uploaded) to stay in numerical order so that we can quickly verify what items you have found. If your computer or mobile device will not allow you to re-order, it will not impact your ability to get credit for the challenge.
- Photos count at the time of upload, not at the time of the being taken.
- Runners must be registered to have their photos count for your team.
- If you upload a photo to the wrong album, that team gets credit. Pay attention to the album you select!

Scavenger Hunt

What happens if more than one club member uploads the same scavenger hunt item?

That's fine. There's no bonus for it, but it doesn't hurt you.

What if I don't have a Facebook Account?

At least one member of your club needs to have a Facebook Account and be a member of the group. If you don't have an account, you can send your photos to a club member to upload for you, or you can create an account just to use for submission.

Are there bonus points for the coolest submissions?

Technically, no. A sign is a sign. But we'll like you more if you find really funny or cool ones!

Do the Scavenger Hunt Items have to be found in Philadelphia city limits?

Nope. Wherever you're running, that counts.

Can one runner find everything on the list?

If they can, sure. Go ahead. But it's a long list, so you might want some help from your club!

WEEK 2: DISTANCE CHALLENGE

Overview

This week, we want to see how far you can go! Log your individual miles, and we'll score you as a team - the team who has the most average miles per registered runner is the winner this week. Requirements:

  • Each runner should report their daily miles (if they have any) each day of Week 2, between Saturday, July 18 (12:00am) - Friday, July 24 (11:59pm), 2020. PLEASE TRY TO REPORT ON THE SAME DAY THAT YOU RUN. If you forget one day, you can submit later, but in the spirit of fairness, try to stay up to date.  If you run twice in a day, you can add it together for one submission or enter them as separate runs.
  • At the end of the week, the total miles for the club will be added up and divided by the total number of runners registered for your club. Be encouraging and supportive of your teammates!
  • Run reporting will be done on the honor system. However, we reserve the right to ask for verification (watch or app GPS file, treadmill data, etc) if there are any questions about a result, so please keep some sort of tracking. If you do anything crazy like run 100 miles, please save us from asking and just email us the verification at phillymayorscup@gmail.com.
  • We refer to it all as running, but walking counts as long as it is walking for intentional exercise. Walking around your neighborhood counts. Walking around the grocery store does not. If it feels like cheating, it probably is. If you're really not sure, ask.

How to Log Your Miles:

1. Navigate to "Log Distance Challenge Miles" from the menu (or follow this link). There are actually buttons that say "Log Activities" or "Submit Virtual Results" ALL OVER the site and on your RunSignup profile. Any one of these buttons will take you to the right place
2. Search for yourself by name or by email address and date of birth
3. You'll show up twice in the seach. This is fine - only one of you will have a button to log activities. Click the Log Activities Button.

4. Enter the date of the activity and the distance in miles. If you have a fun note about the run, you can add a comment, but it isn't required. Hit Submit at the bottom.

You can also add your miles directly from a GPX file, but this does not give us access to the GPX file for any verification. It just fills in your date and distance automatically.

5. Your submitted! There is usually a lag of 2-4 minutes before your results will show up on the results page, so don't be too impatient.

6. Repeat with each run.

Checking Results

You can view results in three ways, none of which will tell you directly who is winning

  • The main individual results, sorted by distance run, can be found on the Results menu item (or here).
  • Your individual distance log, with every run submitted, can be found by clicking on your name from that Results menu item above.
  • Club results by the most distance run overall can be found by clicking on the Team Results tab from the Results menu item above. Remember, these are total miles, and clubs have different numbers of registered runners, so this does not tell you who is winning.

Distance Challenge FAQ's

But I'm not great at running distance. Am I going to hurt my club?

Any miles are better for your club than no miles! The average is on total registered runners for the club, so anything you can do is better than doing nothing at all. And don't stress: this is the only week where distance counts, so you can shine on onther weeks.

If I go for a walk, does that count?

Maybe. The regular walking you do throughout the day does not count. But if you use a run/walk method or just walking for your intentional exercise, then yes, that counts. Use your common sense and integrity: if it counts for you, it counts for us.

WEEK 3: ARTWORK CHALLENGE

Overview

The artwork challenge will ask each running club to submit one running route that expresses artistic design or drawing (with your feet).

The rules are important if you want to get credit!

Submission Requirements:

  • Club captains will be sent a Google Form to use to submit your final designs.
    • If you have more than one captain, you must agree on who is submitting the final design - only one will count for your team!
    • The final submission must be a PDF, JPEG, or PNG under 100 MB.
  • Runners who run all or part of the course are required to show verification that they actually ran (versus designed a course). There are two ways to do that:
    • Join the Philly Mayor's Cup Strava Club (with a name identifiable to your registered name), track your run with Strava (watch or phone) and make sure that specific run is publicly viewable. We will verify there.
    • Fill out this form with a link to a publicly viewable track of your course from any tracking system (Garmin, Strava, Runkeeper, etc.): https://forms.gle/Tpg856PoBJBBvjz76
  • Both the final artwork and the runner tracks must be submitted by 11:59pm on Friday, July 31st for credit.

Route Creation Requirements

  • All of the route must take place within the Philadelphia City Limits.
  • The route may be run by a single runner or multiple runners from the club
    • Using multiple runners for the challenge allows the total distance run to be longer.
    • If using this option, each runner should run a different section of the artwork, not run together.
  • Each section can be (digitally) put together to create one piece of artwork.
  • The entirety of the route must be run during week 3, between Saturday, July 25, 2020 and Friday, July 31, 2020.
  • You can be as creative as you want with how you assign and put together the route. You'll be the final judges!

How to Create a Multi-Section Submission

If you are creating artwork from multiple runs, you will need to piece them into a single image. You can do this however you want (paper and scissors?), but our recommended methods would be:

  • Have every runner send you a screenshot (or the original link to their run) of their route.
  • Use photoshop, or - if you aren't talented with photoshop, Canva is a good free tool - to put the different tracks together into a single image and download that.

How The Winner(s) are determined

Submissions will close on Friday at 11:59pm. On Sunday, August 2, we will send Captains a gallery with all of the photos and a form to rank their top choices. Each club gets ONE vote (their own cannot be included in the top choices), so the team should work together to select the final choice(s).

Voting will include ranking your top 10 choices, with points assigned based on Borda Count (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranked_voting). The design with the most points wins.

Voting will close on Tuesday, August 5th at 11:59pm.

Artwork Challenge  FAQ

Can we run more than one route as a team?

You can run as many routes as you want! Only one can be submitted for results, but you are encouraged to share other creative routes via Facebook.

I don't live in Philadelphia. Since the rules require the route take place in Philadelphia, can I not participate this week?

You can't physically run the route if you aren't in Philadelphia, but you are encouraged to participate by helping your club create a route to run - and inspire them by running your own route in your town and sharing it on social media. And don't worrry: this is the only challenge with a city-limits requirement.

WEEK 4: SPEED CHALLENGE

Overview:

This week will look a little more familiar! Each club will participate in a 5 different races (plus an optional kids run), with one runner scoring in the men's and women's division for each distance.

This week is based off of the normal Philly Mayor's Cup, with a few tweaks for the virtual format. Requirements:

  • There are 5 distances (5K, 5 Mile, 10K, 10 Mile, Half Marathon). Scoring details can be found below.
  • All runners are automatically entered to run any/all of the 5 distances. You can run as many of the distances as you would like (or just one); unlike in a normal year, runners can score in more than one distance.
  • Each must report their time for any/all distances between Saturday, August 1 (12:00am) and Friday, August 7 (11:59pm). No late submissions will be accepted.
  • All runs must also be completed between Saturday, August 1(12:00am) - Friday, August 7 (11:59pm), 2020.
  • All reported times must by total elapsed time, not time moving. This means you cannot pause your run, etc. If you are running for time, please consider a route away from traffic to ensure you can run continuously.
  • Unlike our normal, very hard courses, there is no elevation/difficulty requirement. Get strategic and pick your own course.
  • If you score for your team (or think you might, maybe score for your team), you are required to submit verification of your time. There are two options for doing that:
  • Join the Philly Mayor's Cup Strava Club, and make sure your run is set to public.
  • Fill out this form to submit a link to any tracking service (Garmin, Runkeeper, Strava, etc.): https://forms.gle/W7aFamVU47RuoGyq6
  • For efficiency, we strongly prefer the methods above. However, if you know you will likely score and are having trouble with those, please email us at phillymayorscup@gmail.com so we can ensure verification.
  • If you run a distance more than once the last reported time is the one that will count. This also means if you make a mistake on your submission, you can simply re-submit it correctly.

How to Submit Your Time:

1. Navigate to "Submit Week 4 Times" from the menu (or follow this link). There are actually buttons that say "Log Activities" or "Submit Virtual Results" ALL OVER the site and on your RunSignup profile. Any one of these buttons will take you to the right place

2. Search for yourself by name or by email address and date of birth

3. You'll show up twice in the seach. This is fine - only one of you will have a button to Submit Results. Click the one next to Week 4: All Distances with the Submit Virtual Results Link.

4. Pick the distance that you are reporting on and enter your time (and any notes if you wish to). Make sure you are reporting for the correct distance!

You can also add your miles directly from a GPX file, but this does not give us access to the GPX file for any verification. It just fills in your date and distance automatically.

5. Hit Submit Your Time and you are submitted! There is usually a lag of 2-4 minutes before your results will show up on the results page, so don't be too impatient.

6. Repeat with each distance.

Scoring and Results

You can view individual results (and see all the reported times for your club) at any point by changing the results set on the results page here. If you want to track who is actually winning via the scoring below, you'll have to create your own very complicated spreadsheet and update it regularly (trust us, it's not worth it). We'll post the final team results on Saturday (August 8).

Scoring:

- Scoring for the Speed Week will be in line with standard Mayor's Cup scoring, with a few adaptations this year:
- The finisher in each category (Men, Women, Non-Binary, and Adaptive Racing), in each distance, will be eligible for points.
- Points will be assigned according to the number of teams with at least one runner finishing the distance (so, if 20 teams have a 5K Male runner, first place will earn 20 points, second place will earn 19 points, etc.
- If there is no one registered in the category/distance, no points are awarded).
- The team with the most points wins.

Speed Challenge FAQ

How do we submit our times for the distace we run?

You will be able to submit your results online, from the Results Tab. How-to's for reporting will be available before Week 4.

Can we run more than one distance? If we do, can more than one of them count?

Yes! Unlike a normal Mayor's Cup, you are automatically registered for each distance and can run one, several, or all of them. Additionally, we will score the top finisher for your club in each distance, even if they are top in two distances. Go crazy.

Can we run the distance more than once and count the best one?

Yup. If you run a 5K on Monday and report it, and then run a better 5K on Thursday, you can re-submit your time. Just know that the last time you submit is the one that will count.

Can we run all downhill?

If you can find 13 miles of downhill in Philadelphia, go for it. You can run any course you want.

But...if we aren't all running the same course, how is this fair?

It's not fair. A virtual race will never be fair the way that a one-day race against your opponents, on the same course, will be. Embrace it, and just run the best race you can.

Can we run the regular Philly Mayor's Cup Course(s)?

Sure. We're not sure why you would want to choose those courses if you want to get the fastest time possible, but you can run them if you choose. Just please be aware that the roads will not be closed and traffic moves quickly on Chamounix, and please follow any social distancing guidelines in place at the time.

I'm slow. Will I ruin things for my team if I run on Speed Week?

No! Only the fastest runners (1 male and one female division) will count towards your team score. So, you may have a faster teammate that will score for you, but if not, any points are better than no points.

I'm not going to score for my team. Should I still report my time?

Yes! We'll only count the scoring club members in final club results, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't still get credit for your race.
