About Race The Fires 5k (virtual)

I am hosting the Race The Fires 5k to raise money for the intense rehabilitation of the Boundary Waters/Superior National Forest that will follow the recent destruction due to wildfires taking place in the northern states. 100% of profits gained from this race will be donated to the Friends of the Superior National Forest Organization.

This is a virtual 5k you can do from wherever you are located. Roll, run, walk, however you want to complete the miles!  Each person registered will be mailed a race bib and t-shirt.

Read below for more information about the Boundary Waters/Superior National Forest:

There has been a series of documented wildfires throughout the Superior National Forest as a result of a widespread lightning event that occurred on July 6th. As of Wednesday July 15th there are 15 active wildfires throughout the Superior National Forest, with 4 inside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Due to extreme weather conditions and numerous wildfires burning within the Superior National Forest and BWCAW, the Forest Service closed public access to the BWCAW on Tuesday (the 14th) to protect the health and safety of visitors and firefighters. These fires have caused severe air quality conditions impacting much of the northern states with the AQI reaching above 150. Many businesses and schools are being shut down and towns are being evacuated.

Wildfires are very hazardous and threaten not only the trails, campsites, and wildlife -- but they create very dangerous conditions that are unpredictable with rapidly changing conditions that can change in a matter of seconds with a wind change. Forest Service wilderness rangers are continuing to conduct sweeping efforts within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to inform and evacuate campers.

Friends of the Superior National Forest: This is a nonprofit organization dedicated to volunteer-powered stewardship of the Superior National Forest. We work with individuals, groups, and partner organizations to maintain trails, clean campsites, and restore natural areas throughout the Forest’s three million acres—including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. https://www.friendssnf.org/about
