About Rose Rock Trail Run

Join us for our 7th annual Rose Rock Trail Run!

Picture this: 400+ runners and walkers conquering miles of pristine, normally off-limits trails. The thunder of footsteps on single-track paths. The cheers echoing across 1,100 acres of Oklahoma wilderness.

What makes this extraordinary? These well groomed trails at Crosstimbers Riding Area, located at Lake Stanley Draper, are closed to pedestrians 364 days a year. For one special day, we transform this hidden gem into a runner's and walker’s paradise—3 distance options welcoming all fitness levels.

Never tried trails? You're missing out! Rose Rock is a great event for first timers looking to get out in nature and try a new experience.

Already a trail running mountain goat? Rose rock is a great opportunity to see some new challenging terrain on a 25K course option!

Proceeds from this event supports the Earlywine Park YMCA, providing scholarships for children, programs for seniors, childcare for single parents, and life-saving swim lessons. We never turn anyone away. When a family faces financial crisis, when a child needs a safe place after school, when someone battles isolation—the Y is there. But only because partners like you make it possible.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We are a cup less race. What does that mean?                                                                                                                                                     Trail races have minimized cups for years. There are two practical reasons. One, can you imagine all the cups you see on a marathon course thrown into the woods? Awful! Next, in a trail race, you often run miles between aid stations and need a hydration system. You must carry a hydration system to carry water and your electrolyte drink.
We will have minimal water bottles (single-use plastic) at the finish line. We recommend that you bring a reusable container to fill with cold water. This is for both you and any family members who attend our events.

I registered for the race, but now I can’t run. May I get a refund?      There are no refunds.

If I can no longer run, may I still get my bib and shirt?        Yes, you or a friend can pick up the bib and shirt during packet pickup. However, we will not mail race shirts, nor will we provide finisher item to anyone who did not attend the event.

How do I fix an error on my registration?      If you need to change the distance, shirt size or emergency contact information. Simply email us through race page.

Do you have an age requirement to participate in your race?       Minors (under the age of 18) are allowed to participate if the parent/guardian gives permission. We do not have a specific age requirement because we believe the parent/guardian knows best what their child can handle.
If the minor runs with you, please ensure they can handle the distance. Ensure they have the gear needed for the trail, including proper shoes and a hydration system.
If the minor runs independently, they must also be able to follow course markings and instructions. They should also follow all rules of the trail and race course.

Do you cancel if it rains/snows or if there is severe weather?      We can plan and prepare for a lot, but we can’t control the weather. Most of the time, when it rains, we will still hold the event. When you register, you sign an agreement that you understand unexpected natural occurrences happen, and you will not receive a refund. The reason is that our race expenses are sunk long before race day.
We will do everything possible to avoid this from happening. Options we will consider include postponing to an alternate date.

May I change the distance I am running?      You can change your distance, but it must be done before the race starts. Simply email us in advance or tell us race morning.
If you choose to drop, you must come by timing vehicle at start/finish and notify us before leaving the event.

May a friend/family member pick up my bib?      Yes, make sure you have had a conversation and there is no confusion about who is picking up your bib and race shirt.

May I exchange for a different shirt size than what I registered for?         We want you to have a shirt that you can wear. Shirts are ordered based on the sizes given during registration. Bring your clean, unworn shirt to the start/finish area and if shirts available we can exchange.

Are dogs allowed on the trails or at the start/finish?         We love dogs and know that many runners love to run with them. However, for safety of all participants, we cannot allow dogs in the race. We also know that many people bring their dogs to the start/finish. If you or your guest bring a dog, they must always be on a leash and under control.

Why are headphones/music discouraged?         We share the trails. It is essential to be aware of your surroundings and hear people coming up behind you. For this reason, we suggest that you either don’t wear headphones or listen to music in only one ear at a low volume. We also strongly discourage music played by a speaker while on the trail. This makes it harder to hear others on the trail and disturbs the people around you.

Have friends who want to register?     We will keep registration open online until race start. The sooner they register, the more likely they will get a race shirt

INTRODUCTION TO TRAIL RUNNING

You have registered for a trail run, and this may be your first trail running experience. Welcome to our community!

We are so excited that you are joining us.
Now that you are signed up, you might wonder what to expect and how to prepare. We are here to help!

Differences between Trail and Road Races

Aid Stations: These are situated at points where there is good access near a road. Typically, aid stations are further apart than in a road race. Our aid station will have water, (to refill your hydration device) pickle juice and snacks.  5k/10k aid station at start/finish, 15k/20k on course.

Litter: Garbage should never be thrown on the trail. If you partake of anything on the trail please carry the trash out with you.

Trail Markings: The trail will be marked.  Make sure you follow the blue arrows and directional signs., look for them at intersections. Do not cross any taped off areas. We do our best to mark the course so you can stay on course. Be sure to listen to the race director during the pre-race brief.

The most common reason people get off trail is that they zone out and forget to pay attention to the markings. The second reason is that they follow the person ahead of them, again, not paying attention to the markings.

Exact Distance: Trail races follow the most natural course provided on the trail and are rarely precisely the “advertised” distance.

Trail Running Gear
Much of the gear you use for trail running is the same as road running. Depending on the trail and the distance you are running, there are a few additional items you might need or want.

Hydration System: This is required! You must have a hydration system to carry water throughout your race. This could be a handheld water bottle, vest, or belt. Consider how far you are running, the distance between aid station, and the weather conditions. We recommend that you go to Red Coyote Running and Fitness to find the best option for you.

Trail running shoes: The more technical the trail, the more likely a trail shoe will help you. However, some people wear regular running shoes.

Gaiters: Worn over your socks and shoes, gaiters can be helpful to prevent rocks and sand from getting into your shoes.

Trekking poles: Some people like to use them, and in some cases, people will use them in a local race as practice for a race that does require the use of poles.

The YMCA gives financial assistance to individuals, and families that need a helping hand to participate in the programs and activities at the Y.

RACING SAFELY

Please practice common sense regarding your health and participating in any physical activity.

Trail running/hiking can be strenuous and challenging. Early training and preparation will aid in success.

Portable restrooms will be on site at the start/finish area.

The event will use a CHIP START system and scoring will be done on chip times. Runners should line up  based on your expected finish time.

ALTERNATE RACE DATE

As you know, winter running weather in Oklahoma can be unpredictable. We've planned ahead and set an alternate date if for any reason, (monsoon, snow, ice, plagues of locust, rivers turning to blood, etc), we are unable to have our run on January 30th.

If weather circumstances force a change, our preplanned postponement date will be Saturday, February 20th, same venue, and same time. We hope we don't need plan B but it's in place if needed.

RACE INSURANCE

We are pleased to announce that optional race insurance is available during the registration process made available by AGA. Should you need to file a claim you can refer to https://help.runsignup.com/support/solutions/articles/17000073422-claiming-event-insurance for information on how to proceed. Race insurance is offered by a third party and Rose Rock Trail Run has no oversight or ability to manage or intervene with claims.
