About Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon

NEW LOCATION • NEW DATE

Read below to make sure you understand the changes

The Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon (“SVKT”) is one of the country’s largest triathlons specifically for kids aged SIX through SEVENTEEN.

This year, we are moving to a new venue, the beautiful and recently opened Kathleen MacDonald High School. The swim will be in the pool and the run on the track as usual. The bike course will continue to be on closed roads. There should be plenty of parking, the bike course has easy spectator viewing, and the whole event will be more compact.

Because we are in a new venue with a smaller pool, we are cutting out some of the events that have been traditionally held in order to make the event smaller as we gain more experience with this venue.

Triathlon

There are two triathlon events to choose from.

Competitive Triathlon is for kids aged 6 to 15 who are ready to race on their own. It is timed and there will be awards. No parents will be allowed in transition at any time. (We will have transition clinics to teach the kids everything they need to know.) Your child needs to be able to swim across the pool without stopping and without swim aids; no training wheels or balance bikes either.

The Super-Sprint is for kids 11 to 17. Kids 11 to 15 can choose the shorter distances of the traditional event or the longer distances of the Super-Sprint.

Not sure which event to sign up for or if your child is ready for the competitive event? Read this guide.

Non-Competitive and Duathlon Events

There will be no Non-Competitive Events at this race. But Menlo Park and East Bay Kids Triathlons will still have them.

There will be no Duathlon either. There will be a Duathlon at the East Bay Kids Triathlon.

After some experience at this venue, we hope to bring these events back.

NorCal Youth State Series

This event is part of USA Triathlon's Youth State Series. Because there is so much overlap in participants, we will not have the Bay Area Kids Triathlon Series this year. We encourage everyone to participate in the entire state series, including the Sunnyvale Kids Splash and Dash (date TBD) and the Oakland Tri Club's Splash and Dash on October 25th. Series awards will be given out at the OTC Splash and Dash.

Youth Teams and Clinics

There are two youth teams in the area: TCMTriSquad Juniors in Santa Cruz and Santa Clara Counties and First Youth Triathlon Team (FYTT) in Menlo Park. Both put on clinics and workouts.

In addition, there will be several youth clinics -- especially practice tris and transition practice -- put on by Rolling Stumps Endurance. More details to be announced soon.

NEW DATE • MAY 10, 2026

Give your mom a break - race in the morning, celebrate in the afternoon!

Anyone who identifies as a mother will get a small surprise!

Schedule

2026 Schedule

Saturday, May 9th

Sunday, May 10th

Schedule is tentative until closer to the event and registration closes

There will be many waves for each age group. Your athlete must be at the event with enough time before their wave start time to park, check in, set up their transition area, and get to the pool. We recommend arriving 30 minutes before transition opens for your assigned wave.

WAVE SCHEDULE 2025

This is just a sample. With a smaller field, we expect everything to end about 1 hour earlier this year.

- Bike

The bike course is completely closed to traffic. It is a 1 mile out and back, for a total of 2 miles for each lap. For the Non-Competitive waves, athletes will only bike halfway (around the McClennan exit) before turning around.

The athlete will leave Transition and cross the Mount Line before getting on the bike.

Slap bracelets will be used to help athletes keep track of laps. Completing the required number of laps is ultimately the responsibility of the athlete. Missed laps will incur a 20-minute penalty.

When the athlete returns from riding on the bike course, they must stop before the Dismount Line. The bike needs to be put back in the same spot where it was set up before the swim. Throwing the bike down in a random place will result in a 2-minute time penalty.

- Run

The Run Course will be around the perimeter of the track. Wristbands will be handed to the athletes for each lap COMPLETED. If an athlete does not complete the proper number of laps they will receive a time penalty of 5 minutes per missed lap. Water will be available at the track.

Athletes may run in any lane.

- Swim

The pool entrance is to the right of the pool building. Volunteers will direct athletes and spectators to the correct areas. Do not try to enter the pool directly from transition. If you are trying to cross a timing mat to get to the pool, you are going the wrong way. Ask a volunteer to redirect you.

THE POOL
All athletes start their race at the pool. This includes Duathlon participants. Participants in the Triathlon will swim and then run to transition. Participants in the Duathlon will not swim, but run directly to transition.

FOR BOTH EVENTS:
Drop Off Process - the same for the Triathlon and the Duathlon

  • Drop your athlete at the pool area approximately 20 min before their wave starts.
  • Do this AFTER Registration
  • Do this AFTER setting up Transition
  • Once your athlete is in the swim area, if they are swimming, go around to THE OTHER SIDE OF THE POOL to watch them race; to watch your duathlon athlete, go to the bike course viewing area
  • We will be staging athletes up to three waves in advance of their start times

DUATHLON ONLY
Even though duathlon participants do not swim, they do go to the pool because that is where the duathlon's first phase (running to transition) starts. Everything listed above for the triathlon besides the actual swim applies to the duathlon too.

About Us

The Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon is hosted by the Bay Area Multisport Initiative, a 501c3 charity.

This event promotes a fun and healthy way for kids to have a feeling of accomplishment and encourage self-esteem while introducing them to the sport of triathlon.

With the support of the community, the Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon has improved thousands of lives. The Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon also provides the event’s sponsors with the opportunity to be recognized as organizations that are committed to the youth of our community by encouraging sports and a healthy lifestyle.

Our History

In 2000, the first Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon was held with 215 boys and girls participating, ranging in age from 3 to 15. Each year, we’ve continued to grow with over 1,200 kids participating in 2025. We are now one of the largest youth triathlons in the country. Thousands of youth have participated in this nationally recognized community outreach event. Some of our early participants are now adults and have children who participate in the event.

Our Mission

The guiding principle of the Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon is two-fold.

First, to introduce the sport of triathlon to young people in our community in a safe environment. Distances are short and intended to expose our youngest athletes to the basic elements of triathlon.  The sport also encourages young boys and girls (ages 6 to 17) to lead a healthy lifestyle and enjoy the benefits of outdoor activities.

Second, with charitable contributions of over $220,000 to local charities that serve youth, we have a unique opportunity to raise awareness and encourage young people to give back to their community.

Bay Area Series Leaderboard

The Leaderboard has been updated with the results from all three races --  the 2025 Menlo Park Kid Tri (MPKT) and the East Bay Kids Tri (EBKT) and the Silicon Valley Kids Tri (SVKT).

To win awards in the series, you must do two or more events. The top two scores from each event are counted and the top five finishers for each age will get an award.

Below are the results for series participants. If a racer did more than one event and does not appear on this list, please contact us.

The full list, including those who only did one event, is attached to this page.

Bike Checks

Bike Check dates for 2025:

5/17-5/31 - for the Menlo Park Kids Tri on June 1st
6/28-7/12 - for the East Bay Kids Tri on July 13th
8/2-8/16 - for the Silicon Valley Kids Tri on August 17th

Pre-Race Mandatory Bike and Helmet Check

Your child’s bike and helmet must be checked before they race. Checks done for the Menlo Park Kids Triathlon and the East Bay Kids Triathlon will count for this race. But if you child has a bike crash, you should get a new helmet and if they grow a lot between races, you might want to get their bike checked again.

Please bring your child with their bike and helmet to one of the participating stores listed below for a mandatory bike and helmet check. You will not be able to get your race packet unless you have the proper stickers proving your bike and helmet have been checked. Helmets that are too big or too small or not certified by SNELL or CPSC are the number one reason bike checks fail.

At the Pre-Race Bike Check, your child’s bike and helmet will be inspected for:

  • General condition with an emphasis on tires and free movement of the chain ring system
  • The ends of the handlebars have plastic plugs (called bar-end plugs)
  • Bike helmets are approved by CPSC or SNELL (label inside)
  • Helmets must fit properly and the straps adjusted so no more than two fingers can fit inside
  • There are no overly sharp edges on the pedals that could cut a leg in a fall
  • The brakes work
  • No aero-bars (if you don’t know what that is, the bike doesn’t have them)

If the bike is much too small or much too large for your child, it is up to the bike check technician to determine if this is a safety hazard. A small child on a bike who can’t touch the ground easily is unsafe. A helmet that is too big so it is wobbling around is unsafe. A helmet that is too small so it doesn't cover the head is unsafe.

USA Triathlon rules specify that all bikes must have ONLY two wheels and each wheel must have a brake. Also, motors are not allowed. Disc brakes are fine as are electronic shifters. This means:

NO FIXIES • NO UNICYCLES • NO RECUMBENTS • NO E-BIKES • NO SCOOTERS

EXCEPTIONS:  Children in the Non-Competitive event may ride a balance bike or a tricycle or have training wheels on their bike. If the bike comes with only a rear brake for a younger child, we will make an exception.

We strongly recommend taking the bike to the pre-race inspection BEFORE the race (see above information). If the bike or helmet is deemed unsafe at the race, your child will not be allowed to participate.

Attending one of the Pre-Race Bike Checks will help speed up the packet pickup process on the morning of the race. The bike technician will give you stickers that show you have passed the pre-check safety inspection.

You MUST get the stickers from one of the Bike Check locations in order to bypass the “Bike and Helmet Check” station on Race Day. The line in the morning could be an HOUR LONG in addition to the registration line. It is highly recommended to go to the Pre- Race locations!

NOTE: Please make sure your child’s footwear is suitable for running and riding. No flip-flops or sandals or other open-toed shoes. We recommend shoes with no laces or you purchase lace lockers as most falls in the race are caused by loose shoe laces.

Check-In

To speed up Packet Pickup, have your registration QR code ready. It is in your confirmation email. If you can’t find your confirmation email, go to

RunSignUp > Profile > (Select the child’s profile) > Upcoming Races and click to resend it

Packet Contents

Inside the packet is

  • A small sticker for the bike helmet. This is used by the photographers so you can find the athlete’s pictures on the bike course
  • A larger sticker for the bike. This is used by the volunteers to match the bike to the athlete
  • A bib with your bike number, age group, and distances to complete. You must wear it on the bike and the run
  • A timing chip. Place it on the left ankle. (This keeps it away from the drive train.) Exception: Non-competitive athletes will not have a chip since they are not timed

Wristband system

Along with your packet, you may get a wristband.

  • Challenged athletes may get a wristband to remind the volunteers of their accommodations. Depending on their challenge, their adult may get one too
  • One adult per racer in the Non-competitive event gets a green wristband that lets you go anywhere with your child (except IN the pool) even while racing
  • One adult per racer 8 & Under in the Competitive event and/or with special needs gets a red wristband that allows you to help with setting up & tearing down, but nothing else
  • Athletes aged 9  and up can race on their own so their adults do not need to go into transition and will not get a wristband

T-shirt

You will get the size you ordered. If it does not fit, come back after 11:00 am to see if you can swap it.

Body Marking

Once you get your race packet and goodies, proceed to body marking. The volunteers will mark the athlete’s body so that we know who they are, what wave they are in, and the athlete will have a reminder of how many Bike and Run laps they need to do.

How the Series Works

NorCal State Youth SeriesOverview

This race is part of the 2026 NorCal Youth State Series

Scoring Model

Each race will give you the opportunity to add to your score. The 1st place athlete in each age group will receive 50 points, and each place behind that will receive 2 points less. Everyone in places past 25 will receive 2 points.

Individual Age Groups

Series scoring will be done by single age age groups (7-year-old females, 7-year-old males, 8-year-old females, 8-year-old males, etc). Your age is calculated as your age in 12/31/2026.

NorCal Youth State Series Awards

In the State Series, the top 4 scores for each individual will count towards their series score. These 4 scores will be added together to create a cumulative score for the series.

All events will count regardless of format.

At the end of the series, the top 3 athletes in each individual age will earn a series certificate from USA Triathlon. The winners of each age will also be highlighted in the USA Triathlon Youth Magazine.

For more information about the NorCal Youth State Series, visit the Youth State Series website: https://www.usatriathlon.org/get-racing/youth-triathlon-series

Lap Counting

Please be sure your young athlete knows how many bike/run laps they need to do. The Body Markers will also put the bike and run laps on your child's hands. Volunteers will help count laps of athletes using bracelets on the wrist and bib colors. However, it is the responsibility of each athlete to count their laps and get their bracelets.

There are several timing mats on the course so we will be able to tell if an athlete has done fewer or more laps than required. Please make sure the athlete crosses all the timing mats.

Parking and Directions

When arriving in the morning to the venue, we strongly recommend parking in Parking Lot B which is located at S Stelling Rd and Campus Dr / Pepper Tree Ln.

When you turn west from S Stelling Rd. the intersection will be partially closed to traffic as only access will be towards the before mentioned Parking lot B.

Directions to the event

Alternative access from HWY 85
If you will be arriving from Stevens Creek Blvd or HWY 85 , you can either go around the campus towards Stevens Creek Blvd and S Stelling Rd. And continue to Lot B as mentioned above.

Alternatively, turn right/left to Campus Dr. from Stevens Creek Blvd on the north side of the campus (intersection of Stevens Creek Blvd and Mary Ave) and work your way through Campus Drive to Lot B

Additional Parking

If you encounter any problems finding parking on race day, drop off your athlete with an adult at Parking Lot B and park your car at Flint Center Parking Structure (https://maps.app.goo.gl/DtHNvSQj3RsMkoFQ9)

Placing Race Numbers

You will have three numbered articles in your Race Packet: a large colored race bib and two smaller black and white adhesive tags. The colored bib is to be attached to a race belt or pinned on the front of a t-shirt or running shorts (safety pins are available at check-in). The color denotes your child’s age group. Chip timing will be used again this year.  Check the information on the bib to be sure it is correct. If there is an error go to the “Registration” table for a correction.

The small black and white tags are for the helmet and bike. Check to be sure that the two numbers match the number on the race bib. Put the smallest tag on the front of the helmet. Put the other tag on the crossbar of the bike.

The bib must be worn on the bike and run course. The color of this bib is how volunteers help your child count their laps! The bib should not be worn in the pool as it is not made to get wet.

The helmet sticker is used to sort your child’s photo so you can find them. This bike tag is used to identify your child’s bike when they remove it from the Transition Area after the race is over. A volunteer will match the bike tag to your child’s bib number.

(Note to past race participants: Please remove any old helmet stickers and/or race number tags from past or previous races. There will be volunteers in the Transition Area to assist with proper Race Number placement.)

If you must leave before the award ceremony, it is possible to pick up the athlete’s award before you go.

Leaving - Packing Up

Parents have to have a wristband to access the transition area to pack up. No wristband, no access.

This is to prevent inadvertent removal of the wrong bike.

When in the Transition Area watch out for those who may still be racing.

Please be considerate of the racers.

Race Rules

TIME PENALTIES

Breaking the following rules will result in time penalties of varying severity.

Missing Laps

Athletes are responsible for keeping track of their laps. We have many ways to help them keep track, but ultimately it is their responsibility. But mistakes happen so if a young racer does miss a lap, they will not be disqualified but get a time penalty for each lap missed.

  • Missing swim lap: 5 minutes added for each missed lap
  • Missing bike lap: 20 minutes added for each missed lap
  • Missing run lap: 5 minutes added for each missed lap

Abandoning Equipment

Throwing down the bike or helmet in a random location in transition, littering on the course, all or otherwise leaving your equipment somewhere it doesn’t belong will result in a 2-minute penalty for each occurrence.

DISQUALIFICATION

Breaking the following rules will result in disqualification

Interfering with another athlete.

This includes but is not limited to deliberately getting in their way, sabotaging their equipment or touching their stuff in transition area.

Outside assistance.

Triathlon is an individual sport. Therefore, only volunteers and other racers may assist your racer during the race. In particular, sneaking into the transition area to assist your child with their transitions is absolutely forbidden. It’s cheating.

Disobeying the volunteers or being rude to them.

No yelling or cursing out volunteers. No ignoring their directions. Even if you think a volunteer is wrong, you must do what they say.

You can recognize volunteers because they will be wearing a lanyard.

SPECTATORS MUST STAY OFF THE COURSE

We understand your enthusiasm for your child’s participation, but we ask that you be courteous to other parents and participants.

Please be aware of the race course flow and DO NOT go onto the race course or into the transition area, and please follow the directions of the VOLUNTEERS.

Any adult who goes out onto the bike course while racing is happening will be thrown out and put on our banned list. This is very, very serious as adults on the bike course have caused crashes that have resulted in broken bones in the past.

Any adult who interferes with another racer or provides assistance to their racer will cause their racer to be disqualified.

MACDONALD HIGH SCHOOL RULES

DOGS MUST BE ON A LEASH.

NO FOOD and ONLY WATER in the Track and Pool area. Please do your eating and drinking in the Expo.

What is the Transition Area

The Transition Area is the place where all an athlete’s equipment is stored. The athlete passes through the Transition Area twice during the event: T1 is Swim (or Run) to Bike and T2 is Bike to Run.

To get into transition, you must have:

  • Bike & Helmet stickers applied to your bike and helmet
  • Body marking
  • Either a bib (for the athlete) or a wristband (for an accompanying adult)

Setting up Transition

Every athlete has a spot in the Transition Area (organized by age-group) where their bike, helmet, shoes/socks, shirt, shorts, towel, and other essentials are located. This area is set up BEFORE the race starts. Ask a volunteer, if you aren’t sure where to put your bike and gear.

Bikes without kickstands will be hung from racks. The athlete’s racing gear goes under the rack to the side of the bike.

Bikes with kickstands will have a chalked box to put their bike and race gear into.

Hints for Preparing Your Transition Spot

Bring two small towels, one of which should be old. Put the old towel on the ground beside the bike at your child’s location and place their race equipment on it. The other towel is for drying off after the swim. A colorful, easy-to-recognize towel is recommended.

The time spent in the Transition Area counts in the overall time so it should be as fast as is reasonable but not so fast that your athlete forgets to put on the helmet or tie their shoes. We will have volunteers in the Transition Area to assist athletes so we REQUIRE that all adults stay out for the safety of all the participants. An exception to this is for the Non-Competitive event where ONE adult may assist the athlete if needed.

Please be mindful of other racers when setting up your transition spot.

Once your transition is set up, proceed to the Pool. Please arrive at least 20 minutes before your wave starts.

T1 - Transition from Swim to Bike

For the triathlon, following the swim, the athlete moves to the Transition Area where they remove any swim equipment such as goggles, quickly dry off, put on their helmet and shirt, put on shoes and walk or jog the bike to the Transition Area exit following the sign that says, “Bike Out”.

BATHING SUIT REMOVAL IS NOT ALLOWED. There is no changing area and nudity is not allowed.

Athletes put on shorts and a shirt over their bathing suit with their race number pinned on in advance. Some athletes prefer to just put on a shirt (with the bib) and ride with bathing suits instead of shorts-over-suits. A race belt may also be used.

Please note that USA Triathlon has a rule: torsos must be covered. So the boys will have to wear a shirt over their swimsuit.

For the duathlon, the athlete still moves to transition from the pool, but since they don’t swim, they won’t be wet and will already have their shoes on.

ALL ATHLETES MUST WEAR THEIR HELMET THE ENTIRE TIME they are on or moving the bike. This includes the transition area. Please also make sure shoe laces are not undone or loose. If a racer is not skilled at lace tying, consider wearing shoes without laces or purchasing “lock laces” to replace the laces.

NO OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE

Outside assistance – being helped by someone other than a volunteer or other racer, is against the rules. If a parent breaks this rule and sneaks into transition to help their child, the athlete will be disqualified. Please don’t do that to your child.

There are many, many volunteers in Transition who will help your child if they can’t find their bike, need help tying their shoes or anything else they require.

NO BIKE RIDING IN TRANSITION

The athlete should walk or jog with their bike to the Mount Line just outside the transition. Cross the Mount Line and then get on the bike.

T2 - Transition from Bike to Run

After the bike ride, the athlete stops and gets off the bike before the Dismount Line. Then they walk or jog the bike back to where their equipment is located.

PUT THE BIKE BACK IN ITS PLACE BEFORE GOING OUT ON THE RUN

The bike must be returned to the same location as the athlete started where all their other equipment is placed. Throwing a bike down in some random location is against the rules and will result in a time penalty of 2 minutes.

If the athlete can’t find their spot, they should ask a volunteer to help them. It also helps if their towel is colorful and unique.

The bike is placed in the rack or box, the helmet, and other riding equipment are removed, and the athlete prepares to run. Generally, young athletes ride their bikes in their running shoes so after removing the bike equipment they are ready for the run. Runners may jog to the “Run Out” sign in the Transition Area, watching for bikes and other runners.

NO OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE

The rule of no outside assistance is still in effect.

Packing up for the day

The Transition Area is guarded by volunteers. To remove a bike from the Transition Area you must show a race number and match it to the race number on the bike. Your race packet will have a numbered race bib to be worn on the shirt or shorts and two small stick-on race numbers, one for the bike and one for the helmet. In addition, each athlete will have their race number marked on their body by volunteers using pen. All of these numbers must match.

Please be mindful of other racers when tearing down your transition spot.

Distance By Age

Event distances are based on the age of the athlete as of Dec 31, 2026:

Distance by Age

USAT Membership

A USAT membership is required for this race.  USAT is the governing body for Triathlons in the United States.  They establish the rules we follow and provide the insurance for our event.

What is "Triathlon Age"?

In order to keep participant ages consistent at multiple races throughout the year, USAT considers your age to be your age on December 31st of the current year. For example, a person who will be turning 8 years old anytime during the year is considered 8 years old for the entire year (even if their birthday has not passed yet).

Inclusion and Accommodations

The Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon is an inclusive race. All USAT-sanctioned events allow athletes to compete in the gender category they identify with. If that choice is different from their assigned sex at birth, pre-registration of their gender category is required. If you are unsure of how to do this, do not hesitate to contact us at racedirector@svkidstri.org and we will walk you through the process.

If an athlete has other special needs, contact us at least one (1) month before the race and we will work together to come up with a race plan that takes their needs into account.

Scholarships

The Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon has a limited number of scholarships available. They are available to youth whose household income is 75% below the Adjusted Mean Income for your household size and county. To request a scholarship, please fill out the form at this url:
