The Smiley Sprint Triathlon continues the tradition of triathlon in the Forsyth County/Winston-Salem Area. A Team of premiere Ironman triathletes (100 Ironman finishes between them!) from this area have a passion for the sport and promoting healthy fitness lifestyles in our community. The “Smiley” concept recognizes the life and mission of Richard Smiley. For those that knew Richard, “Smiley” is in recognition of his spirit and giving heart to our community. For those who didn’t know him, “Smiley” means we are going to have a happy day of health and fitness for all (Richard would have it no other way!). This race is a non-profit event. The organizers roll 100% of the proceeds back into the race, or to local charities with a priority to brain cancer initiatives.
Are you a first timer and a bit nervous? No worries – we are the ONLY triathlon with a concierge team ready to help YOU all day long!
The Smiley Sprint Triathlon is particularly welcoming to first-time triathletes including first-timers’ recognition at the Awards Ceremony, a triathlon/transition clinic at packet pickup, and the opportunity to participate in Triathlon 101 Training program at Fleet Feet Sports (Program includes race registration + USA Triathlon license!).

Swim:
The endless debate…YARDS OR METERS? Clemmons West is a meter pool. However, all participants must submit a 100 yard swim time for seeding purposes- might not make sense but that’s just how it works. Being a pool swim with a staggered start, participants are seeded from fastest to slowest. It is in your best interest to submit an accurate 100 yard “pace” time. In other words, don’t submit your fastest 100 yard swim time, submit a 100 yard time that represents what you’ll do on race day over the 300 meter distance. By seeding yourself properly, you’ll end up swimming near people who swim the same pace as you. This will reduce the number of people who you will need to pass or the number of people who will be passing you.
We will stagger the start times by 15 seconds to ensure plenty of room for everyone.
The swim times below are from previous races and will provide some guidance as to how to project how fast or slow you would swim 100 yards.
Minutes & Seconds per 100 Yards: Average Swimmer: 2:08; Fastest Swimmer: 1:10; Slowest Swimmer: 5:09; Top 10%: 1:34
Bike:
The bike course is a two-loop format on rolling terrain in rural Forsyth County. Cyclists will leave the pool area on Middlebrook Dr. and turn right onto Idols Road. Each loop is an approximately 5.5 mile counter-clockwise loop on Idols, Dock Davis and Hampton Roads. At the conclusion of the 2nd loop, cyclists will turn right onto Middlebrook Dr. and return to the transition area. All roads are open to vehicular traffic but are lightly traveled on race morning. Law enforcement officers will ensure safety at all intersections and Clemmons Bicycle Shop will provide sag support during the event.

Swim Times: All participants must submit a 100 yard swim time for seeding purposes. Being a pool swim with a staggered start, participants are seeded from fastest to slowest. It is in your best interest to submit an accurate 100 yard “pace” time for your swim. In other words, don’t submit your fastest 100 yard swim time, submit a 100 yard time that represents what you’ll do on race day over the event distance. By seeding yourself properly, you’ll end up swimming near people who swim the same pace as you. This will reduce the number of people who you will need to pass or the number of people who will be passing you.
**Swim times must be entered IN SECONDS. No special characters, no colons, no decimals, nothing but seconds. So if you swim 100 yards in 1:30, then you should enter 90 when you register. If you enter 130 then that is 130 seconds (2:10 when converted), which will have you seeded much later than you want. Also, make sure you time yourself on 100 yards, not 50 yards. That is a common mistake people make and then they are seeded much higher than they need to be.
If you need to change your swim time:
1. Log into your Run Sign Up profile
2. Go to MANAGE REGISTRATION for the Smiley Sprint Triathlon (be sure to click on "Manage Registration" and not the event name)
3. Use the menu bar to navigate to QUESTIONS
4. Make any edits and follow the on screen prompts to save
**The swim time should be entered IN SECONDS. If you swim 1:30 for 100 yards then your swim time entry should be 90
Seeding Order: All participants will be sorted by the submitted 100-yard swim time. Any athlete who registers at packet pick-up will be seeded AFTER the last pre-registered athlete begins. We will give a 4-5 minute break between the last pre-registered athlete and the first on-site registered athlete.
A couple hints to guide you with your swim time if this is your first time doing this:
50-80 SECONDS – (0:50 – 1:20): Super Fast (In contention to win the race and you swim competitively)
81-105 SECONDS – (1:21 – 1:45): Fast Enough (still starting in the first 1/3 of the event)
106-130 SECONDS – (1:46 – 2:10): Average Swimmer (Swim well enough and don’t need to stop at the end of each lane line
131-164 SECONDS – (2:11 – 2:44): Novice (Still getting used to this thing called triathlon)
165-259 SECONDS – (2:45 – 4:59): Complete Beginner/I want to start at the back
Please note these are ranges. The best thing for you to do is to time yourself in a pool to get your time. There is no substitute for this.
USAT Information
USAT’s “Age Up” Policy:
An athlete’s age for any USAT sanctioned race will be their age as of Dec. 31 of the race year. The age they are on 12/31 will determine their racing age group. If an athlete is due to “age-up” into the next group, it will happen at the beginning of the year, not after the athlete’s birthday.
Example: John Smith is 39 and will turn 40 on November 20.
John will be considered 40 for all of that year's races – and will race in the 40-44 age group at all of those races.
Sally Jones is 29 and will turn 30 on July 3.
Sally will be considered 30 for all of that year's races – and will race in the 30-34 age group at all of those races.
