About Susan Bradley-Cox Tri for Sight Triathlon/Duathlon

The Susan Bradley-Cox Tri for Sight will be hosted by The Club at UK’s Spindletop Hall, on  Sunday, September 13,  2026. The USAT-sanctioned event features a 400-meter swim in a heated, outdoor pool with a time trial start on 15-second intervals.  The duathletes will instead be treated to a relatively flat, fast and scenic 2-mile run behind and beside Spindletop. Both Tri and Du events will then transition to a 12.6-mile bike course on low-traffic roads in the beautiful horse country located just east of the Kentucky Horse Park. The Tri and Du events both finish with a 3 mile run.

The aqua-bike will have the same format as the triathlon for the swim and bike stages. ATTENTION: Aqua-bike athletes timing will end upon re-entering the transition area after the bike stage.

Aqua-run athletes will start the swim once the last triathlete/aqua-biker is out of the pool and then do the same swim course, followed by a quick transition and out onto the 3-mile run course.

Must register by Wednesday, July 29, 2026 to ensure you receive your desired shirt size.

About Susan

Congratulations to Susan on your induction into the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame! Very well deserved!  Click here for the official announcement from USA Triathlon!

I developed my active life style as a young girl growing up in Paducah, Kentucky, where I took an early interest in cheerleading, swimming and acrobatics (gymnastics). These activities taught me a appreciation of physical activity and I now find emotional releases through physical expression.

While still in high school I enjoyed lifeguarding and taught swimming during the summer months. I continued to challenge myself in college, first as a circus performer at Florida Southern University, and then as a cheerleader, a member of Blue Marlins Synchronized Swimming Team and a performing gymnastics in Troupers at the University of Kentucky. These experiences taught me to perform deliberately and to the best of my ability under pressure, and also to experiment with new adventures. I still love the physical challenge and remain a cautious competitor in swimming and Triathlons.

In the past I have taught Physical Education in public, private schools and College. I am at present Head Coach of the Wildcat Masters Swim Team at the University of Kentucky and teach Water Aerobics at Transylvania University. This allows me to inspire others to move their bodies and thus be healthier, happier people! I am also the Lexington Triathlon Coach for the Kentucky Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. The participants on the Team raise money for the Society and I coach them to compete in a Triathlon! The money they raise goes for Cancer research at the University of Kentucky!

I feel that I have been blessed with the ability to achieve physically and want to share my talents and experiences with others. I have been competing in Masters Swimming and Triathlons since the 80’s..I have won 12 USAT National Championships .. have been on Team USA (Triathlon) since 1989. I have had the opportunity to travel all over the World representing the USA…winning the ITU World Championships in Triathlon (in my age division) 9 times and have been an All-American Triathlete since 1989. I competed in the 1986 Hawaii Ironman World Championships…this was one of the highlights of my Triathlon career.

Physical exercise makes me feel refreshed and positive, which results in a healthy release of tension. This for me is a personal accomplishment, one that has helped me grow and feel better about myself, but also one that I am happy to share with others!

Tri and Aqua-bike Swim Course: 400 Meter Pool Swim

The swim will take place in the competition pool at the Club at Spindletop Hall and will be 400 meters in length. The swim will be “snake style” so swimmers will swim down and back in each lane, always staying to the left in the direction they are swimming. Upon returning to the start end of the pool, swim under the lane line to enter the next lane until you’ve completed all eight. Flip turns are optional. Athletes will be required to sit and slide into the pool and will be instructed to “go” when it is time for them to start. THERE WILL BE NO DIVING OR JUMPING allowed for the start of the swim. Any athlete that jumps or dives to start the race will be disqualified, no exceptions! There will be 15 seconds of spacing between athletes.

Once the last swimmer has entered the pool, all swimmers in the pool will have 20 minutes from that point to complete the swim. If you have not completed the swim by then, you will be asked to forfeit your timing chip. We do this because we have a limited time window for use of the bike course, so significantly delaying entry onto the bike course could jeopardize our ability to meet the deadlines required by the police and Spindletop. We appreciate your understanding. If you don’t think you can complete the swim, we encourage you to find a swimmer and do a relay, or do the duathlon.

Swim course

Duathlon Course: Run: 2 miles

The initial leg of the duathlon will start on the road next to the pool and will be an out and back behind and to the east of the Spindletop property on paved roads.

Du run course

Tri, Du and Aqua-bike Bike Course: 12.6 miles

-Leave transition area and go right on drive and around loop in front of Spindletop Hall
-Proceed out main drive to a right onto Iron Works Pike. The run course will also be on the shoulder on Iron Works for a 1/2 mi. stretch, so you MUST stay on the roadway and off the shoulder.
-Cross Newtown Pike and then turn left onto Mt. Horeb Pike
-Follow signage and volunteers to the turnaround
-Return using the same route

Bike course detail within Spindletop property

For Aqua-bikers, their time will stop once they have crossed the timing mat coming back into the transition area after the bike leg of the event. We encourage them to come across the finish line anyway to receive their finisher’s medal, but this is not required. They can walk to the back side of the finish area to receive their medal as well.

Tri and Du Run Course: 3 miles

-Out of transition through the back of the parking lot and then left behind Spindletop. It is critically important that you stay on the roadway and do not throw trash into the grass or fields throughout the course in the UK Ag Department farm area (from the gate at Spindletop to Iron Works Pike). They have many experimental crops growing in the fields adjacent to the road, and if anything jeopardizes one of those experiments, or we are not good stewards of the property, we will not be permitted to use this run course again next year.

-Follow volunteers and signage out to a right on Iron Works Pike (onto shoulder)
-Run about 0.5 miles to turnaround at Newtown Pike
-Back on the same route to the finish in Spindletop parking lot.

Event Rules

General Rules:

  1. Entries are not transferable or refundable.
  2. USAT rules apply.  Unsportsmanlike conduct is grounds for disqualification.  We have professional USAT officials who will be monitoring all aspects of the race, so please know these rules and follow them.
  3. No escorts, pacers, or personal aid stations.  Water and SWORD will be available on the run courses.
  4. No alcohol, drugs, or stimulants before or during the race.

Transition:

  1. Athletes only in transition area. You must have body-marking and your bike number affixed to your bike before you can enter transition. You should also have your timing chip.
  2. We cannot be responsible for lost articles.
  3. You will have assigned racks in the transition area, so please put your bike on the correct rack. Numbers will be attached to the end of each row of racks to select the correct one before you set up. If you rack at the wrong location, volunteers will ask you to move to the correct rack. Please conserve rack space so that later arrivals will have room to set up.
  4. Since the bike starts from one end, and the run starts from the other end, there are no “best” spots in the transition area.
  5. Relay teams – The first member (swimmer) of a relay team must remove the chip strap and give it to the next member of the team inside the transition area. There will be a relay chip exchange location just inside of the transition area in the grass island under the trees. Chip straps must be worn around the ankle.  The biker will then go to their bike location on the rack and retrieve their bike. On return, the cyclist must place the bike back on the rack before transferring the chip strap to the runner in the same exchange zone.
  6. Absolutely no glass in transition area.

LEGS OF EACH EVENT:

Swim (400 meters):

  1. No glass in pool area.
  2. Port-a-potties will be available near transition, and restrooms will be available in Spindletop’s “barn” and their locker rooms.
  3. Athletes should begin lining up no later than 7:20 a.m. in the order of seeding (race number). You will be directed by volunteers.
  4. ALL entries into the water will be slide entry — jumping or diving is an automatic disqualification!
  5. Swimmers enter the water at 15 second intervals.  As soon as the swimmer in front of you pushes off the wall, you will be directed to enter the pool, feet first.  Wait for the signal from the starter to begin swimming.
  6. If the swimmer seeded in front of you hasn’t shown up, you will be asked to wait an “extra” 15 seconds so you start at your assigned time.
  7. Swimmers will swim down and back in each lane, always staying to the left in the direction they are swimming. Upon returning to the start end of the pool, swim under the lane line to enter the next lane until you’ve completed all eight.  Flip turns are optional.
  8. When needing to pass, touch the swimmer ahead on the toes, then pass on the right toward the middle of the lane, or pass at the wall.  Swimmers being passed should stay as far left as possible. You are responsible to watch for other swimmers and avoid collisions.
  9. Wet suits, fins, artificial propulsion or flotation devices are not allowed.  Swimmers may touch the lane lines, but using a lane line to propel the body forward is grounds for immediate disqualification.
  10. As you exit the pool, WALK across the deck, and then follow the signs back to the transition area. You can run or jog once you have exited the pool deck.
  11. Since this is a pool swim, swim caps are suggested but not required. You will receive a swim cap at packet pick up if you are doing the triathlon.

Bike (12.6 miles):

  1. No riding in the transition area.  Bikes must be pushed in and out of the area to and from the mount/dismount line.
  2. Athletes must be 15 years or older to compete in the bike portion of the race.
  3. Helmet must be strapped on prior to pushing your bike out of transition. Riding without a helmet, either before, during or after the event, is an immediate disqualification.
  4. The course will be well-marked, and police will be controlling traffic at major intersections.  Volunteers will also assist in directing you.  However, you are responsible for knowing the course.  Detailed maps will be available at packet pick-up.  There could be light traffic along the route.  You are also responsible for avoiding any debris or pavement irregularities.
  5. No drafting (riding within 3 bike lengths behind another athlete except while passing).  Officials on motorcycles will be monitoring the race and may assign time penalties for violators.
  6. Ride to the right side of the road at all times except when passing.  Always pass on the left. You should never cross the yellow line (middle of the road) to pass.
  7. Although traffic will be light, and athletes will be given the right-of-way at major intersections, there will still be active traffic on the course.  Please obey traffic rules and use common sense.
  8. No headphones while biking.
  9. You are responsible for any mechanical problems on the course.  Accepting aid from others results in disqualification.
  10. Aqua-bike time stops upon crossing the timing mat on re-entry into the transition area after the bike leg.

Run (3 mi.):

  1. Please review the run course map online or at packet pick-up.
  2. Please keep to the right and pass on the left.
  3. When running through UK AG fields between Spindletop and Iron Works, DO NOT leave the road. There is important research being conducted in these fields and disturbing them will be detrimental to this research and will likely mean we can no longer use this area for the run course. We will have a Port-a-Potty available at the 1 mi/2 mi mark, at the same location as the aid station.
  4. When running on Iron Works, stay to the right when running in both directions. DO NOT CROSS OVER INTO THE TRAFFIC LANE!! This will be grounds for disqualification for leaving the run course.
  5. Race number must be worn visibly, especially at the finish.
  6. No headphones while running.
  7. No pacing from non-participants.

Chip Timing / Finish Line:

  1. You must present your race number to receive a chip and strap.
  2. The chip and strap must be returned immediately after your finish. You will be charged a $75.00 fee for a lost or un-returned chip or band.
  3. Chips must be worn around the ankle during the race.
  4. Make sure you cross the timing mats throughout the race so that all your times will be captured.

Local resident (Fayette and surrounding counties) participants are strongly encouraged to pick up their packet on Friday or Saturday.  Out of town participants may pick up their packet Sunday morning from 5:30-6:45 a.m. But get there early as there will be no packet pickup permitted after 6:45 a.m. the morning of the race.

This lot will hold ~100 vehicles and will be first come, first served. Please use the main entrance to UK’s Club at Spindletop Hall and then follow volunteer directions into Spindletop. There will be parking volunteers race morning to guide you, so please follow their directions!! This parking is in a paved lot.

  • Once the lot is full overflow parking will be in the field.
As you enter Spindletop you'll be directed to the right, towards the Legacy Trail, into the field parking.  Please follow the guidance of the volunteers - this field belongs to the UK Ag Research group and it is imperative that we minimize our impact.  Please note that this is a grass field, your shoes will likely get damp.

  • You may NOT leave the parking area until at least 10:30 if you park in the lot at Spindletop.
Even if you are finished well before this, as we are not planning to let any cars out of the parking area until most of the bikes have returned from the bike course. So, PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH OUR VOLUNTEERS, as the safety and the flow of our course is most important. If you must depart before 10:30, we suggest you park on Research Park Drive and ride your bike (with helmet on) on the Legacy Trail to Spindletop. Just be advised if you take that option that you will still not be able to take your bike out of the transition area until we have most bikes in anyway. We need to keep the transition area clear for participants coming in with their bikes. Please be respectful of your fellow athletes.

  • Parking for spectators not arriving with athletes is available at Research Park Drive.
Research Park Driveis located about a 1/4 mile west of Spindletop off Iron Works Pike. Turn onto Research Park Drive, follow it to the end and find a parking spot on either side of the road as close to the Legacy Trail as you can.

  • Helmets are required
You must have the helmet fully strapped BEFORE you leave the transition area, and it MUST remain on and strapped when you enter, and while on the bike course.

  • Relay Exchange Details
There is a  Relay Chip Exchange location within the transition area in the grass island next to the swim in/run out entrance. ALL RELAY MEMBERS must exchange their chips in this exchange location!! Bikers must meet their swimmer in this relay exchange area, and secure the chip to your ankle before going to the bike rack location. You may already have your bike helmet and bike shoes on while waiting in the relay exchange location. Runners must meet their biker in this relay exchange area after the biker has finished racking their bike. Runners must secure the timing chip to their ankle before leaving the relay exchange area.

The Susan Bradley-Cox Tri for Sight follows the official rules of USA Triathlon. Please review and understand them here.

MISCELLANEOUS RACE DETAILS

  • BICYCLE FACE BIKE MECHANICS
There will be a bike mechanic from Bicycle Face on hand race morning until the race begins to help with any minor bike problems. If your bike has major bike problems, please take it to a mechanic in advance of the event because this bike mechanic will not have the time or tools to do any major work.

  • BATHROOMS
Several Port-A-Potties will be located near transition, and there are restrooms in the “Barn” next to the Tri For Sight tent, and in the pool house locker rooms hear the pool deck. There will also be a Port-A-Potty at the 1 mile mark on the run course.

  • WEATHER CONTINGENCY PLAN
Inclement weather might force the cancellation of the swim. In this case, the Race Director at her discretion may opt to include a short run to replace the swim, to shorten a leg of the event, or make any other adjustment as necessary. If weather is so severe that the safety of participants is a concern, the event may be delayed to later in the morning. If bad weather conditions persist, the event may be cancelled. In the event of a cancellation, no make up date will be offered and no refunds will be given.

  • REFUND POLICY
    No refunds will be provided.

SPECTATORS

  • CHEERING ON YOUR ATHLETE
The course maps are available above, so this should help you get an idea where the action takes place.

To watch the swim, you should walk around the pool along the side with the paved road. You will not be allowed to enter the pool deck, but there is plenty of room around the fence to stand and watch. Once your swimmer has left the pool, you could walk down towards the transition area or stand a long the road to watch them bike out. They will return along this road on the bike before heading out on the run. To watch them leave on the run and return to the finish area, you can walk over to the other side of the transition area, between the TA and the event tent. Just be careful of athletes that might be still coming from the pool towards transition. Definitely use caution anywhere you see a coned area for athletes!

  • FOOD
All of the food we will be offering at the event tent is for athletes only. If you want to purchase food, Spindletop will have food available at very reasonable prices at the tiki bar near the pool deck starting at 10 am.

  • ENJOY SPINDLETOP
Family of participants are invited to stay to spend the day at Spindeltop, so plan to enjoy their great facility!

  • GOING HOME
If your athlete is not attending the awards ceremony, they can leave as soon as we open up the transition area for removing their bikes, which will likely be around 10:15. The parking area next to the transition area will likely not open until at least 10:30, or once we are down to our last few bikers on the course.

UK Eye Research Fund

It’s difficult to imagine life without sight.  Each year, thousands lose the battle with macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.  Since our inaugural race in 2003, all proceeds from Tri For Sight have gone directly to the UK EYE RESEARCH FUND to support work to help us better understand and treat blinding diseases. Over the years, more than $250,000 have been donated from race proceeds. The triathlon also underscores our commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Recently, the programs funded by Tri For Sight have expanded. Initially funds earned were used to support UK macular degeneration research. Then specialized equipment was purchased to help study and treat genetic eye diseases in children. While this work continues, new research and clinical efforts have been organized under the UK Global Ophthalmology (UK GO) program. UK GO’s goal is to continue critical public health research and ensure all Kentuckians have access to high-quality eye care. We are developing a statewide telemedicine-based screening program for diabetic retinopathy, as well as collaborating with Fayette County public schools and the “All Eyes on Appalachia” program to meet the needs of underserved Kentucky communities. Internationally, UK GO is partnering with academic health institutions in Ecuador and Haiti to help train future ophthalmologist for sustainable impact where the need is great. We are pleased the Susan Bradley Cox Tri For Sight and the Bluegrass Triathlon Club can support these worthy causes.
