Pet Policy: As much as we love animals, our insurance policy does not allow dogs or pets on the premises. We kindly ask that you leave your pets at home. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Animals

Dogs are not permitted in the pool facility or the pool parking lot/grounds at any time (exception: licensed service dogs on active duty). Our insurance specifically will not cover any liability arising from our canine friends. As much as we love dogs, they are not welcome at any time during this event. Please leave them at home or with a caring friend while you are here. This applies to all event participants (runners, volunteers, crews, families, friends, staff, etc.).

Bandits

The registration fee for each runner (and their pacer, if applicable) does not cover any support costs for other non-paying runners/participants (bandits). Please be honest, considerate, and respectful of the incredible amount of time, work, and money that goes into putting this event on. If you want to be a part of the race, please do the right thing and pay your fair share by registering. Those still insisting on “banditing” will be subject to disqualification from all future events.

These are the final, official results.

NOTE! The results for all drop down runners (these signed up for a longer distance but not completing it) are kept separate in our results and are not eligible for any awards (except the finishers hat), regardless of placement. Since they completed a shorter official distance (at least 50K or 100K), we have given them an official finisher’s hat and credit for that distance rather than a DNF. However, when the results are submitted to UltraSignUp and UltraRunning Magazine, all results for the same distance are grouped together. This results in their placement being different for some runners than what we have posted. Our results provide the correct placement for recognition and awards.

ABOUT

Aid Stations

Aid stations and warming areas are only for registered runners, their active pacer at the time, and race volunteers/support staff. All others will need to courteously avoid these runner designated areas so registered runners can have full, unimpeded access/use. Help us keep the runners #1. Thanks!

  • Aid Station 1 - The Long Run Store will host the main aid station at the start/finish area at Springbrook Pool. Fully Stocked Aid Staition with warming areas available for runners.
  • Aid Station 2 Woody's Near Famous Aid Station ( Approximate 1.90 miles  & 8.1 miles) Fully Stocked Aid Staition with warming areas available for runners.
  • Aid Station 3 Lucky's Aid Station (Approximate 4 Miles & 6.1 Miles) Fully Stocked Aid Staition with warming areas available for runners.

For specific aid station locations and distances, click here for the overall and course maps.

There are numerous side trails on this trail system. We will have the official Pistol routes marked with signage, distance-specific colored markings/duct tape/arrows on the pavement (Green/Lime for the metric course, Orange for the imperial course)

Amy Robbins

“Pistol Ultra was my 1st 100 mile event. From pre race emails to post race photos and recognition of participants, this event was a class act. The swag and awards were unique and very useful. The location and access for family and crew was extremely easy to navigate. The aid stations were amazing. If they didn’t have something you wanted to eat, then you simply weren’t hungry. I highly recommend this race to anyone wanting a great experience. I do love trails, but doing this course for my first 100 gave me confidence and a lot less to be anxious about. Excellent event!!”

Bib Assignments

Each race has its own bib color assignment: 10 Mile, 20 Mile, 50K, 50 Mile, 100K, 100 Mile. Numbers are assigned in blocks within those groups and then assigned alphabetically by last name at check in. Because of the complexity and size of the event, it is not possible to reserve specific numbers for certain runners, so please don’t request that. Those participating in the Double Barrel events will receive a bib for each of the individual distances they have registered for. Scroll down to section entitled “Double Barrel runners” for further details.

Considerations

Make sure you have the appropriate gear. If you have never run an ultra, then pick the 10 MIle or 20 Mile Option. With 8 hours to complete either one, you’ll have plenty of time! Plus you'll be able to run and chat with some of the 50 and 100 milers and 100Kers who are out on the course, learn valuable info, and see first hand what running an ultra takes.

Continuing After Completetion

So…you finished your official distance, but still have lots of gas left in the tank and want to keep going OR perhaps you want to pace someone else? You are certainly welcome to AFTER you have followed the finishing and awards procedures on this page AND removed your bib.

Course Food

The usual ultra fare will be available: gels, oranges, bananas, hot broth, salty/sweet foods, PB&Js, etc. There may be a few additional surprises. Progressing into Saturday night and Sunday, there will be heated items such as soups, grilled cheese sandwiches, burritos, etc. Specialty items can often be short-order cooked to your specifications, if you have a few minutes. If you need specific food items, you will want to bring them yourself. If you feel like bringing some food to share, we’ll put it on the table for all. There are 24/7 stores nearby (including Kroger and Wal-Mart), if you or your crew need to purchase any special food items.

DAWN DOUCETTE

" The Pistol Creek races are a must do in East Tennessee.  The courses are beautiful and run largely on the greenway, which are fairly flat and have virtually no road traffic.  Since the course has many out and backs, you consistently see other runners and are never alone.  The most enjoyable part of the marathon for me was being able to cheer on the ultra-runners who had been on the course for 24+ hours.  I can tell they really appreciated the encouragement and it helped motivate me as well.  Enjoyable and logistically easy race.  So glad I was finally able to partake.  Looking forward to next year!

Description

WELCOME TO THE 13th YEAR FOR THE PISTOL PARTY!
Event Description
Kick off spring with a bang at this fun and friendly urban ultra—plus 10 Miler and 20 Miler—just outside Knoxville, TN! Held in Alcoa, this popular event has become a favorite for runners of all experience levels. With distances ranging from 10 miles to 100 miles, there’s truly something for everyone.
Runners enjoy premium swag at check-in, outstanding course support from enthusiastic volunteers, heated aid stations, and a festive atmosphere filled with camaraderie among fellow ultra lovers. Finisher awards are as cool as they are memorable, and the welcoming vibe makes this a fantastic race for both first-time ultrarunners and seasoned veterans. Walkers and push rim athletes are also encouraged to join the fun—this event is about community and celebrating every journey.
All races start and finish at the Alcoa Springbrook Pool Center (636 Vose Rd, Alcoa, TN). The USATF-certified courses are mostly flat (especially for East Tennessee!), paved, and follow an 8-foot-wide greenway that is fully lit at night. For those who prefer a softer surface, grassy shoulders are available along sections of the trail. The route follows scenic Pistol Creek, weaving through Alcoa, alongside ponds and streams, and into Maryville’s beautiful Bicentennial Greenbelt Park.
Course Distances and Format:
50K & 100K: Use a 10.35-mile loop
50K = 3 loops
100K = 6 loops

10M, 50M, & 100M: Use a 10-mile loop
10 Miler = 1 loop
50 Miler = 5 loops

Whether you’re chasing a new distance or just soaking in the energy of a vibrant running community, this is the perfect race to launch your spring season.  For a complete schedule, click here.
Check This Double Barrel Award Out!
The Double Barrel Award is for those who complete both the 50K and 50-mile races. Select the 50K/50M Double option when registering. Finishers receive medals and a special award, but must start both races to qualify.
Important!
PLEASE NOTE: Both the 10 Mile and 20 Mile are on SUNDAY, March 15th at 8 am.
Refund Policy
If you want to potentially be reimbursed if you are not able to participate, we recommend you consider purchasing event registration insurance to cover yourself. This option is offered during registration checkout. We do not provide refunds, deferments, rollover credits, transfer of entry fees, etc, regardless of the circumstances. Selling/giving your bib to someone else is not permitted.
If your circumstances change and you are unable to join the Pistol party, please cancel your registration as soon as you know. Simply follow the directions here. You’ll score good karma, possibly allow a waitlister to snag a spot, and definitely help us with the onerous task of registration management. If you are unable to run, but are still available, please consider volunteering. The runners would really appreciate your help and support as they get their run on! It takes a whole village to produce an event this size. Plus you’ll snag some credits towards a future Good Endurance Running Credit.
Please read the event website Registration details and policies here carefully before registering. They include legally binding terms and are incorporated herein by reference. Don't register unless you understand and accept them.
Plan to arrive Friday afternoon for check-in, packet/swag pick-up, score some official Pistol gear at the Pistol  Store, meet other runners, and enjoy other pre-race activities. It will be held inside the large tent next to the Start/Finish area. There is space close by along the course where you can set up your own personal support area. There are REAL indoor heated restrooms at a couple of locations along the course. In addition to awesome aid stations and amazing runner support, all ultra participants receive a FREE finisher's food truck meal ticket. Yes, you will definitely be spoiled! Can't get any better for a spring race!
In Closing...
Tell your friends and get everyone registered. (Shirt sizes guaranteed to those registering by Feb 28th.) Hop over and like our event Facebook page here and our Instagram Page Here to keep up with all the latest happenings. Lots of great info and interaction there. We can’t wait to have you join us for an amazing experience at the Pistol party!

Distance Change (up or down) Pre-Race

Good news! We will let you change your mind. If your circumstances have changed prior to registration closing, simply hop on your account, select this event in your registration history, and edit your distance as needed. If going down, there are no partial refunds. If going up, you will need to pay the price difference (from what you originally paid, to what the current price is for the distance you are changing to). After registration closes, and even up through the pre-race check-in, you can still drop down or go up. However, you will need to wait until the onsite Check-in, then go through the line for the distance you are currently registered for and get your bib, etc. THEN come to the Changes/Solutions table and tell us what distance you’re changing to, submit your current, and pay the difference as described above. You will receive a new bib for your new distance. If you are registered for the half or full marathon and want to go up to an ultra distance, you will need to go directly to Changes/Solutions either Friday or prerace Saturday morning (see check-in schedule here). NOTE! Since all finisher’s medals and awards are ordered many weeks in advance, we cannot guarantee awards for those changing distances after the date listed on the registration page here.

Distance Change - Going Up or Down Mid-Race

The option to change your distance up or down after your race has started is not available. In addition to the significant timing and award issues it would cause, it would not be fair to those already registered and competing to not know who their competition is.

Double Barrel Runners

The Double Barrel Award is for runners who complete both the 50K and 50-mile races. To qualify, select the 50K/50M Double option when registering and start both races at their official start times. Runners cannot continue directly from the 50K; they must start the 50-mile race with the rest of the field. Finishers receive medals and a special award.

Drop Bags

You may place a drop bag under the roof overhang at the Springbrook Pool Center right beside the start/finish area, or just support out of your vehicle. You will pass by the Start/Finish on every loop, or about every 10 miles. Parking is located near the course and is lit at nighttime. There is also a designated open air area near the start/finish area where you can set up a self support table/canopy/tent, if you wish.  These sites are first-come, first-served. Store your valuables in your car, out of sight. If you leave items at the Springbrook Pool Center or elsewhere, please put your name on them.

Dropping out or DNFing

Unfortunately, things sometimes happen and you may not be able to complete any official distance. If that happens, please drop out at the start/finish, since we will not have transportation anywhere else. It is absolutely essential that you notify the timing official (NOT a volunteer). Let them know if you are quitting so we don’t go out looking for you – we don’t want to have to call a missing persons report into the police! Simply sign our form that you’re done. During the event, if you accept a car ride, or ride a bike, or scooter, etc… you are out of the race, obviously.

LODGING/RESTAURANTS

Event Lodging/Restaurants

Lodging
We have four awesome host hotels who love our Pistol runners and are willing to offer great room discounts. Please let them serve you. Be sure to thank them!

NOTE: If you are willing to prepay, you may be able to forego the host hotel group block reservations below and get a slightly cheaper non-refundable rate via other reservation methods at the same hotels. However, you will not be a part of the Pistol group and you may not be able to cancel your reservation without penalty, should Murphy make it impossible for you to come. You will also not get the perks exclusively for our Pistolers (such as late checkout pending availability…ask at check-in) for those who have reserved rooms in our group blocks. It also really helps us when runners reserve as part of our group block at the host hotels, since some of our supporting partners base their support heavily on these verifiable statistics. Thank you for helping support the event we all love by booking in our group blocks.

Final Email #6 (3/7/24)

It’s almost Pistol party time!

A Few Important items to cover in our last email!

We still need volunteers on Saturday night and Sunday if you know of anyone available to help. Click Here to Volunteer

1. After Packet Pickup John Kelly will speak at approx. 6:30 in the ballroom at the Hilton. After he finishes we will have a brief race briefing, for those that want to learn more about the race or that may have questions it isn't mandatory to attend you can find out all the information at the link here.

2. Be sure to check out the Pistol Store at check-in. There will be some great deals on lots of cool Pistol goodies on SALE!

3. Make sure you’re set up and ready to go with RaceJoy In case of any weather this is a great tool for us to communicate with the runner. It is packed with cool features that will help you. The best part is we’re providing it for free to all of our participants, so it you have nothing to lose. So go ahead, download it and check it out. It is a great way for you family and friends to watch your progress and encourage you. You can also monitor your own progress, so no more wondering how many loops you’ve done. It will also let you know if you get off course when you start sleep walking. Just click on the RaceJoy tab on the home page here.

4. If you want to change distance, you will need to wait and do that on site during check-in.

5. Bibs are only issued to the registered runners. They will not be given to anyone else.

6. Good Times Events will be timing all ten of our events. Please be sure to show them lots of love for all their hard work!

7. Here is the link to the live results.

8. Please note that on Saturday morning, the general parking lot next to the Springbrook Pool Center is ONLY for 100K and 100 Mile runners so they can self support as needed. (Here is the parking map.)  To enter, you will need to either show your 100K or 100 Mile bib OR your registration on your phone to the Parking Marshal. Marathon & Half Marathon Runners you can use the 50K Parking spots on Sunday. NOTE: PLEASE DON'T PARK IN THE CHURCH PARKING LOT ON SUNDAY

9. Remember, this is a cupless race! Be sure to have your own cup for water and sport drink out on the course. If you don’t have one, no worries. You can grab one or more collapsible Pistol Hydrapak Speedcups at the Pistol store during check in. They are super cheap, lightweight, and collapse down to almost nothing.

10. The course has several road crossings. Generally the traffic will stop. However, we are not permitted to stop or block them and must give them the right of way as needed. This includes the 4 way stop in Maryville at East Harper Ave and East Church St. Please use caution and yield to all Traffic, we will have signs and traffic cones at all intersections on the sidewalks before you cross.

11. You will need to officially finish the distance you are registered for to be an official finisher. The option to change your distance up or down after your race has started is not available. Click here for more info.

12. There are unheated bathrooms/changing area/showers in the Springbook Pool Center.

13. If you have any unanswered questions, come to the Changes and Solutions table during check-ins and we will do our best to answer them there. We are out of the office now hard at work getting everything set up and ready to go for you! So email responses may be limited or delayed.

Chance of rain 70%  Saturday Night: A shower or two possible early with partly cloudy skies later in the night. Low 39F.  Winds 10 - 15 mph. Chance of rain 30%. Sunday: Partly cloudy skies. High 52F. Winds 10 - 15 mph.

In the event of a severe thunderstorm we encourage you to follow these steps:

The safety of our runners and volunteers is extremely important. If there is lightning, strong winds, or other potentially dangerous weather in the area, those out on the course or outside at the start/finish area are strongly encouraged to immediately take cover and shelter in place until it is safe to resume activity. Since the course is approximately 5 miles linear, there is no way to immediately extract all runners, or immediately call the race. While the race management will attempt to notify those who are potentially in harm’s way, it is the responsibility of each individual runner, pacer, and volunteer to monitor the conditions and take whatever action is necessary to maintain their personal safety at all times. If such weather happens just prior to the scheduled start of a race, the start of that race may have a weather delay until the race management deems it is safe to start, based on the available information. If the race management determines that the weather delay is long enough, they will announce whether the race cut-off will be extended, or whether the race will be canceled altogether.

15. Finally review your course maps on this page scroll to the bottom to see the full map and half way down you will find the interactive map. Click here to view.

16.  The Greenway is lighted at night but we encourage you to bring a headlamp and use if needed.

OK, that’s it! Safe travels. We can’t wait to see you and share in your accomplishments this weekend!

The Pistol Team

FINAL NOTE regarding Race Director decisions

While we have done our best to plan this all out in advance, there may be changes, perhaps significant ones, that occur with little or no notice. Be prepared for that. Expect the unexpected. This is part of the fun of ultra running. The plan is for everyone to work together so we all have fun. But someone has the final say, and that’s the race director (or his assignees).

Finishing

When you approach the start/finish line for the final time (either as a finisher of your bib distance or because you are dropping out), you must stay to the right and go through the designated finisher’s chute. (If you are dropping out, you must immediately notify the timing official by the start/finish line, NOT a volunteer.) All finishers (including those who are dropping out), regardless of distance, must immediately proceed into the Awards area in the school for your recognition and to preserve your placement.

Gear Swap

There will be a free gear swap table at Check-in. Bring any gently used, clean running gear in good condition that you are no longer using and would like to bless someone else with. And if you are needing something, be sure to check it out. You can’t beat the price!

Lauren Smith, Total Time: 43:44:46  Bio: I am from Northern New York and started running consistently in 2015. In June of 2018 I ran my first trail race and was HOOKED and ran my first ultra a few months later. I love getting to be out in nature as much as possible. Lately, I've really been enjoying pushing and testing the limits of my aerobic endurance and I'm hoping to stay happy and healthy so I can continue for years to come.

Lawrence Chow, Total Time: 106:50:40  Bio: I ran my first trail race in winter 2018 (-3F) and developed a passion for trail running since. Aside from running, I enjoy being outdoors, photography and conversations with friends on the trails.

Headphones

Our insurance discourages the use of headphones/earbuds, but does not prohibit them. If you chose to wear headphones/earbuds, please use common sense; stay aware of your surroundings and others on the course. If you are situationally challenged, it may be wise to consider using only one earbud.

Helen Yang

“The Pistol Ultra is hands down one of the best races out there, which is why I've done it three years in a row and will continue going back! The RD’s, volunteers, and everyone involved really pour their hearts into everything and take care of you out there, making sure you have what you need and providing things you didn't even think of. The swag is also amazing and functional: win-win!”

Thank you for your support and for respecting and abiding by these laws.

Items Left Behind

Please ensure that you take all your belongings with you, as we cannot be responsible for retrieving them or mailing them to you. Anything left will be used, donated, or disposed of.

JAMEELAH ABDUL RAHIM MUJAAHID

"I have run many races, but they're something special when the race feels like home. I feel taken care of at The Pistol and not only me. I see them attending to everyone and making sure each runner is okay. There have been races where I get a high and low but this one I can honestly say I run 30 hours actually having fun not really realizing I'm running because I'm smiling so much from the volunteers, the music, the RD and his family. It's just a feel good Ultra race that I recommend you give it a try.... peace."

JAMEELAH ABDUL RAHIM MUJAAHID - 2022 Slowest Draw Award Winner

Jogging Strollers

Runners with a single-occupied jogging stroller are permitted, providing they meet the following conditions:

  1. The guardian MUST notify the check-in staff that they will be using a jogging stroller, and must sign an additional waiver at check-in for the stroller occupant.

  2. Jogging strollers are only permitted during daylight hours.

  3. Runners with strollers must start at the back of the pack for their particular race.

  4. Extreme care must be exercised at all times to prevent the stroller from hitting or impeding anyone else at all times during the entire event, whether before, during, or after the race.

  5. They must stay to the right side of the trail at all times unless and only while passing someone slower.

  6. They must always call out to notify other slower trail users sufficiently before passing them.

  7. They must yield way to all other trail users.

  8. They must not “leap-frog” other trail users.

  9. They must not use any headphones, earbuds, or other listening devices.

  10. If race management deems them to be a hazard or other issue, they must be willing to either continue without the stroller (after transferring it to another guardian) or discontinue the race altogether.

Kelsey Porter

"This was my first in person ultra race and I was blown away by the support and camaraderie among all the runners and crew. The event was very well organized and all the volunteers and staff were amazing. The course was beautiful and the weather was so nice the day of the race. I definitely want to come back to tackle the 100 mile in the future!!!!"

Kelsey Porter - 2022 100K 1st Place Female

Larry Carpenter

I was first introduced to the Pistol Ultra in January 2016 (my 1st ultra ).  I signed up for the 100k basically on a dare of a friend.  Since then, I have successfully completed the 50k, 50k/50 mile double barrel, and the 100 mile distance (2022).  The full Arsenal complete! The Pistol is not only one of the best ultra distance races around, it is the best organized race, and has the best support crew!   The atmosphere surrounding the Pistol Ultra is unmatched and it shows by the Pistol Family of runners that attends the Pistol year-after-year!   A large volume of my Facebook friends are from the Pistol, and that list of friends keeps growing each time I attend!   The loop oriented course allows us to see each other several times throughout the race.  Even during the wee hours of the morning when the pink unicorns appear out of the dark or a feisty little leprechaun leaps across the course in front of you, you are family.   The truth is out there!   I highly recommend any of the Pistol Ultra or Pistol Creek distances.  No matter which distance you choose, you will not be disappointed!  Come join us!  We are Family!

Late Start

Due to USATF and timing requirements we require you to start the race at the appropriate Time.

Leaving the Course

Runners are not permitted to leave the course or have any type of transportation other than their own two feet (and/or hands!) at any time until after they are finished. Leaving from any part of the course and then returning later is not permitted (except as noted below). Any violations are grounds for disqualification.

  • Exceptions:
  • The start/finish tent/aid station, Springbrook Pool Center area and restrooms, and 100 Mile/100K adjacent parking lots as shown on the Parking Map are considered part of the course. One hundred Kers and 100 milers may self support out of their vehicles if parking in these adjacent parking lots.
  • One hundred Kers and 100 milers are allowed to sleep in their vehicle in the 100 Mile/100K adjacent parking lots as shown on the Parking Map. Just be sure to notify a timing official when you leave the course to sleep and when you return to the course to continue. You must start back at the same spot where you left.

Lighting

There are several road crossings, and you will share the trail with bicyclists and other users. The trail is 100% lit. However sometimes some of the lights are not always functioning correctly, so having a good working light readily available at all times is highly recommended. It will be essential for those running at night time to have a headlight facing forward and/or reflective clothing, so those approaching can see you. A rear-facing red flashing light is also recommended for those running at night time.

Medical

There will be no ongoing medical checks during the race; however, a first-aid kit will be available at each aid station.

Our medical director will be onsite at the main tent at the Start/Finish area, providing basic first aid and assessing any potential medical situations. They also offer physical therapy and foot care, helping runners push through when they feel they can't take another step. If you're struggling or thinking about calling it quits—DON’T!

Additional Medical Support:

Saturday night: Minor first-aid services will be available at the aid station from medical personnel.
Emergency care: If you’re in serious condition, you should call 911 & notify Race Director & Medical Director.
Personal responsibility: You are responsible for your own well-being.
🚨 IMPORTANT: We do not supply or recommend the use of pain relievers (NSAIDs, acetaminophen, etc.) during an ultra. Please bring your own supplies, including:
✔ Medications
✔ Foot care items
✔ Hot Hands
✔ Band-Aids
✔ Vaseline
✔ Anything else you may need

There are 24-hour drugstores nearby if you require additional supplies. Stay safe and run strong! 💪

Night Time Course Support

There may be volunteer course monitor(s) on bicycles that will patrol the course and provide limited assistance, if needed.

OVERVIEW/RULES

Overview/Rules

Pacers

They must stay with you and wear your numbered pacer bib visible to the front at all times. That bib will only be available to you at pre-race check-in. Be sure to ask for it if you are using a pacer.

  • By signing the waiver and participating in the event, you will assume all liability and responsibility for your pacer(s) at all times during the event.
  • On-duty pacers are entitled to the same support as the registered runners, as long as their bib is fully visible to the front. When changing pacers, be sure the bib gets transferred to the new pacer. Anyone without a registered runner bib or a valid pacer bib, or who is not a registered volunteer for that specific location/time, will not be entitled to any of the event support and will not be permitted in any areas designated for registered event participants during the race. This includes (but is not limited to) aid stations, warming stations, all food and drink support, and any other event-related service or support. (See the section on Bandits below.)
  • Pacers are for mental support, not physical support (unless you fall in the creek!). In other words… no muling!
  • Due to the number of participants during the early part of the race, bicycle pacing will not be permitted during daylight hours on Saturday; only a single pacer on foot is allowed. If the runner has no foot pacer, a single bike pacer per runner will be permitted only during Saturday night and anytime Sunday. Bike pacers will need to have lighting at nighttime (front and rear), use extreme caution, and give right-of-way to all other foot and vehicular traffic. Bicyclists, please adjust front lighting down at nighttime so it does not shine into the eyes of oncoming runners. Bike pacers must wear the numbered pacer bib facing forward and abide by the same requirements as a foot pacer.
  • Our volunteer sign-up site has time slots available for volunteer pacers starting every hour from 9 PM Saturday though 10 AM Sunday. They are instructed to be stationed at the main aid station near the start/finish line. If you need one, ask when you first come through (heading up to complete the short out-and-back past the school). If there is one available, this will give them time to be ready when you return back though a mile or so later.

Parking

Parking maps are provided in the Course Maps document. There is free parking at the start/finish and at several points around the Greenway Trail. The 100M/100K/50M runners will have priority parking in the main Springbrook Pool Center parking lots closest to the courses. That way they can self-support out of their vehicle if needed. (Please note: support canopies/tents/generators are not allowed in the parking lot. See page here for where to setup tents/canopies.) The 50K, 50 mile, half and full marathon runner, volunteer, and staff parking locations are also noted on the parking map here. Please follow the signage and parking volunteers’ directions. Remember, it will likely be dark when you arrive, so be particularly observant and careful. All vehicles must be removed from all of the parking lots by 6 PM Sunday.

Permitted Ages

All ages are permitted in this event. All minors must have a legal guardian present at all times while the minor is participating in the event. Both the minor and the legal guardian MUST sign the waiver. The legal guardian is completely responsible for making sure the minor is adequately trained and prepared for this event, and for their health, safety, and well-being throughout the entire event. We reserve the right to disqualify the minor and remove them from the event if the legal guardian is not present or we feel there is a significant risk for them to continue on.

Pre-race preliminaries (Saturday)

At approximately 7:40 AM EDT Saturday, at the Start FInish area, the Race Director will welcome everyone. There will be a few last minute announcements, we will sing the National Anthem, and then the 50K starter’s pistol will fire. Five minutes later the 100K and 100 mile starters pistol will fire. Please make certain you are in the correct start wave for your distance.

Volunteer

We love our Pistol volunteers!

It takes an incredible number of volunteers to successfully host an event of this size. Please encourage all your family, friends, and community to come. Everyone’s help is really needed. Even registered runners can volunteer and still participate. Without volunteers, this event would be impossible. So click on the link below and grab your favorite spot(s). We’d love for you and your family to fill multiple slots, if you can. There are several age appropriate opportunities for children ages 12-18 to volunteer too. This can be a great family experience. Just check the minimum age requirement for each position before signing them up. If you have a child under 12, they are permitted to accompany you at one of the age 12 and up positions. You or another supervising parent/guardian that you provide must be with them at all times. Since they are not filling an actual volunteer slot, just note their name, their age, and shirt size in the “Comments” under your sign up. Remember to invite your friends too. The more the merrier! We need lots of help to support these “crazy” ultrarunners getting their run on, ESPECIALLY Saturday night through Sunday. Please consider helping out in any way you can. Along with all the runners, we deeply appreciate your support!

What will you get?

  • We’ll have a cool Pistol shirt and some swag just for you!

  • All volunteers who sign up on this platform are eligible to receive a percentage credit upon completion of their shift assignments based on the amount of volunteer hours. The credit will be valid for one year towards the registration fee for any of our future events Good Endurance Events (Tsali Ultra, The Pistol Ultra Run). Credit details and value are covered in the link for recording your time below

  • A huge amount of satisfaction and lots of good karma! Plus you'll make LOTS of runners happy!

Need to get some community service hours in? This is a great place to do it! We'll be happy to validate your hours upon completion of your assignment.

Be sure to sign up ONLY for yourself so we’ll get the right shirt size/count for each person. A big thanks!!

All distances may check in on Friday from 1:00-6:00 PM EDT at the Hilton Cove Meeting Center and Saturday 5:30-6:30 AM EDT at Springbrook Pool Center in “The Pistol Corral” (large white tent in parking lot). The 50 mile check-in can also be done 6:30-7:30 PM EDT prior to race start at 8 PM EDT Saturday evening. DO NOT SEND THIS INFORMATION BY EMAIL, FACEBOOK, TEXT MESSAGE, PHONE, OR OTHER MEANS. Please provide your registered name, registered email address, registered distance, and the name of the person picking up for you. However, for just $20 shipping/handling, we’ll send it to you if needed (international shipping is more). Just let us know via the website contact portal by Wednesday prior to the event. We will follow up with you after the event.
If you absolutely cannot make it Friday, there will be minimal check-in from 6:30-7:30 AM EDT Saturday before the 50K/100K/100 mile races begin.

Race Directors

Meet Your Race Directors — We’re Honored to Be Part of the Pistol Community!

We’re excited to introduce ourselves as your race directors! Brian & Shelley Gajus and Gordon & Arden Turner are joining forces to carry on the legacy of two beloved endurance events that have long been favorites among runners across the U.S. and internationally.
About Brian & Shelley Gajus — Ultranaut Running
Brian and Shelley are the husband-and-wife team behind Ultranaut Running, a grassroots organization based in Knoxville, Tennessee. Since launching in 2014 with the simple mission of helping people get active outdoors, Ultranaut has grown in every sense.
They are the race directors of the acclaimed Yamacraw Trail Runs and the No Business 100, and are now parents to five children—Adelaide, Eliza, Gwendolyn, Ingrid, and Grant—who keep them on their toes while they juggle full-time jobs and family life.
Over the years, their events have evolved into more than just races. They’ve become powerful community experiences, bringing people together to share life-changing moments, forge lasting friendships, and make a positive impact on the land and each other.

About Gordon & Arden Turner — Bluegrass Endurance

Gordon brings nearly a decade of experience as a race timer and coordinator with Good Times Event Services, where he has supported a wide range of races—ultras, marathons, half-marathons, mud runs, triathlons, 10Ks, 5Ks, and 1-milers. He’s also served as a race director for 10 years, helping nonprofit organizations host successful signature events.
Gordon has a passion for seeing individuals reach their goals through running and walking. As he puts it:
“My passion as a race director is to create an inclusive and welcoming experience for every runner, whether it’s your very first race or your 100th, whether you’re a walker or a runner. Our mission is simple: to support you in reaching your personal goal, whatever that may be. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching someone cross the finish line for the very first time—it’s inspiring every single time. Our goal is to make each race not only meaningful, but also fun, enjoyable, and filled with a festive atmosphere that celebrates every step of your journey."

Married to Arden for 20 years, Gordon is part of a family where an active lifestyle is second nature. Together with their three children—all runners—Gordon and Arden are excited to be part of this new adventure. Their goal is to continue building friendships, growing the community, and positively impacting every participant they meet.

A Shared Purpose

Both couples are passionate, hard-working, and deeply committed to the running community. Their shared values, love for the sport, and genuine care for people are what brought this joint venture to life. It’s these same values that will help this endeavor grow, thrive, and deliver something truly special for our running family.
We are truly honored to be part of this incredible community and look forward to meeting each of you—on the course, at packet pickup, or cheering you on at the finish line.
Let’s make this journey unforgettable—together.

RACE JOY TRACKING

Race Start

Races will begin when the starter pistol fires. Participants MUST start at the official time set for their event. Early starts are not permitted. Late starts are ONLY permitted as set forth in the Late Start. Any violations of these start times/conditions will be grounds for disqualification. It is solely the responsibility of each participant to ensure they are in full compliance with these rules.

  • 50K: 7:55 AM EDT Saturday
  • 100K and 100 Miler: 8:00 AM EDT Saturday
  • 50 Miler: 8:00 PM EDT Saturday
  • 10 Miler: 8:00 AM EDT Sunday
  • 20 Miler: 8:00 AM EDT Sunday

Reasons why the 50 miler begins at 8:00 PM

As with most decisions, there are pros and cons. After careful analysis and discussion among our staff, here are some of the reasons why we set it up this way:

  • We want to maintain a comfortable family feel to the race and avoid a “cattle stampede”. We don’t want to overload the course first thing Saturday. This helps us keep the Pistol Ultra a top quality event and a good experience for our participants.
  • We want to maintain a high level of aid station support and avoid overloading them early on Saturday.
  • The Pistol Ultra is a great venue for runners to try something they haven’t done before. Some want to experience running through the night in a “safe” venue, not cut their teeth on some hairy mountainous trail run where their life insurance policy may be needed. It provides a way for these runners to try night running without having to try tackling a hundo right off.
  • It gives the opportunity for some runners to tackle the Double Barrel Challenge: Complete the 50K in the morning, then the 50 miler that night. Successfully finishing the Double Barrel Challenge comes with a really cool award!
  • It provides the opportunity for the 50 milers to run with the hundo runners and learn how to tackle longer distances.
  • It provides the hundo runners with encouragement and additional runners on the course during the night.
  • The staff and volunteers are already in place for the hundo runners, and can handle the additional 50 milers.
  • It helps spread the finishers out more uniformly over the entire event so we can provide more support, encouragement, and recognition to each one.
  • It helps fill in the number of runners crossing the finish line later in the event to keep the energy level up.

All sales are final. We do not provide refunds, deferments, rollover credits, transfer of entry fees, etc. This includes if the event is postponed or canceled for any reason. Selling/giving your bib to someone else is not permitted.

Claiming Event Insurance: Click Here For More Information On Claiming Event Insurance

If you would like to be reimbursed if you are not able to participate, we recommend you consider purchasing event registration insurance to cover yourself. This option is offered at the bottom of the final page during registration checkout. Registration protection insurance allows race participants to get reimbursed up to 100% if you cannot attend the event for a number of reasons, including covered injury, illness, traffic accidents, etc. It also has the added benefit of protection if a race participant is required to work for a covered reason. It does NOT cover if the event is postponed/cancelled. This coverage and all claims are handled by a third party. We do not process claims. Please review the terms/conditions carefully before purchasing.

Refunds/deferment/transfers

Click here for our refund policy. By registering, you are indicating that you understand and agree to this policy.

If your circumstances change and you won’t be able to make it to the Pistol party, PLEASE cancel your registration via the the edit link on your registration receipt or via your registration history on RunSignUp as soon as you know. It will help with our race day planning. If you are unable to run, but are still available, please consider volunteering. The runners would really appreciate your help and support as they get their run on! It takes a whole village to produce an event this size. Simply sign up here.

Trail Surface & Condition

It is almost completely paved greenway, with just a few short sections of concrete sidewalk and/or road. For those who prefer a softer surface, there is grass along some of the greenway. Depending on the weather, the paved trail can be dry, or have icy patches (particularly on wooden bridges), or may have snow/ice. If there have been recent rains, or it rains during the event, flooding and/or mud are possible. You may have to detour off the course just long enough to cross over the road overpasses where the trail is flooded underneath. If so, be particularly cautious and yield to all traffic. Be prepared for anything and use extreme caution if the conditions warrant it!

Runner Email #1 (2-7-24)

Hello Pistol Runners

Thank you for registering for the Pistol party. We look forward to seeing you and over 400 of your closest running friends in a month. We can’t wait to be there to cheer you when you toe the start line, encourage and support you on the course, and then celebrate your finish with you at the finish line arch!

We have several things to cover in this first email, so let’s get started.

1. This will be the 11th official running of the Pistol. Start/Finish Area: Springbrook Pool Center, 636 Vose Rd, Alcoa, TN 37701

2. We are excited to have Two-Time Barkley Finisher John Kelly as our Keynote Speaker for 2024 Join us at the Hilton Ballroom to Hear John! If you know of anyone who hasn’t signed up yet, let them know to sign up today at www.pistolultra.com.  John is scheduled to take the stage tentatively at 6:30 pm.

3. We need volunteers to help all support all our ultrarunners. Especially Saturday night and Sunday. Even Pistol runners can volunteer before or after they run. In addition to the cool Pistol volunteer swag, all volunteers will receive race credit towards another event. Plus you’ll score lots of good karma, and most importantly, help lots of runners be successful!  Please encourage anyone you know to help. A huge thank you! Click Here To Volunteer

4. Need to change distance? You can easily do so via this event website link: https://runsignup.com/Race/ThePistolCreekRun/Page/EventTransfer

5. Friday check-in for all distances will be at the Hilton Inn Cove Convention Center again from 2 - 8 PM. Address is 2001 Alcoa Hwy, Alcoa, TN. They are right next to the Knoxville Airport. They are also one of our host hotels, so if you are already staying there, you’ve got it made. See the website schedule for full schedule details: Click Here To Learn More

6. If you need a little “tune-up” (taping/stretching/massage) or some medical/coaching advice before the race, our Ultra Doc (Dr. Jeanne Williams) will be at Packet Pickup at the Hilton on Friday, the 8th for mini-sessions. You can schedule those here: Click To Schedule. Walk-up sessions are available if not scheduled, but book in advance to guarantee your session!

7.  All medical and physical therapy needs will be handled by our Ultra Doc, Dr. Jeanne Williams, and her Quest Health & Performance team. They will be back again at the main aid station to provide all your medical needs and help you to achieve your race goals. Jeanne is a doctor of physical therapy, certified run coach, and crazy endurance athlete herself; so bring all your questions and concerns! She gets it and can help you save your race! She has saved MANY other runners races, so be sure to see her if you are having any issues or considering dropping. She can work miracles! During the race, medical services will be available on a first come/served basis (priority to runners still on course) at no additional cost to you. Don’t hesitate to come see them during or after your race! They’re easy to spot…just look for all the purple!

8. Live tracking. We are providing free RaceJoy tracking for all runners who want to carry their cell phones and participate. We strongly encourage you to use it. You or anyone else will also be able to scan the QR code on your bib to immediately see your results, track your progress, see where you are at, and lots of other helpful things. The link will be up on the event website shortly. In the meantime, be sure you have downloaded the app and are ready to rock and roll!

b) Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.racejoy.racejoy&hl=en_US

9. You all are going to really be spoiled with aid station support again this year! The Long Run staff is hosting the Start/Finish Aid Station again, then there's Lucky's Aid Station (Little River Trading Company, and others) again a couple miles are so down the course, then you come to the legendary Woody's Near World Famous Aid Station which will be staffed by (East Coast Adventures Team) just before you reach the far end of the loop and again as you start your return. So you might be able to put in your order on your first stop, then pick it up a few minutes later on your return. How sweet is that? A bit further along on your way back, on the spur (Aluminum Avenue) at the Turnaround we will have a unmanned Aid Station with Water, Tailwind & Pickle Juice, here you will cross timing mats and get your timing split, then you’ll pass by Lucky's Aid Station again before you hit the Start/Finish and complete your first loop. So, you’ll pass an aid station every 1-2.5 miles or so. Talk about being spoiled!

10. Onsite food trucks! We have scheduled two awesome food trucks to feed y’all. Everyone registered for any of the ultra distances gets a free meal (up to $11) on us! Just present your bib tear-off stub. We have requested vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options in addition to all the other tasty goodies they’ll have for you.  Meals can be purchased directly from the food trucks on site for the half/full marathoners and anyone else.

a) Saturday 11 AM to 6 PM: Knox Bun

b) Sunday 11 AM to about 3 PM: Waffley Good Knoxville

c) *Times are approximate

11. If you have questions, please search the website first: https://www.pistolultra.org Pro tip: Go to the page you’re looking for the info on, press Ctrl and F to bring up a search box. Type in the keyword you’re looking for and viola!

12. If you still need to connect and want accurate answers, please respond to this email or reach out via the website contact portal: Click Here To Email Us  Posting them on Facebook is not recommended since we are working hard to get everything ready for you and likely won’t have the time to be surfing Facebook and waiting to answer questions or post comments. Runner Email #4 (3-4-24)

Its Finally Race Week!
Today’s email focuses on what it will take for you to succeed at the Pistol. Ready? Be sure to read and review number 8.

1.  PRE-RACE Medical Services: If you want PRE-RACE taping or bodywork done, Dr. Jeanne Williams will be available Friday, between 12-6 pm, at the Hilton during packet pick-up. Walk-ups are accepted pending availability. However, we highly recommend you schedule an appointment ahead of time to secure your preferred time. Grab your spot now right here!
2.  Race Day Medical Services: The Quest Health & Performance team will be located in the start/finish tent for the entire race! If you are even slightly considering pulling out of the race for a physical reason before you finish, PLEASE go see Jeanne or one of her associates before you make a final decision! She has saved the races for some of the most discouraged, hurting and hobbling runners. Jeanne and crew will be providing stretch sessions, body work, blister care, compression boots, Theragun, taping, first-aid, medical assessment and triage. They will also be monitoring the warming tent for those at risk of hypothermia. During the race, services will generally be provided first come-first served, but with the following exceptions: medical emergencies will always take first priority and runners still on course will be seen before others. If you have finished your race, please be understanding of this for folks still on the clock. They will gladly take care of you as soon as possible once on-course runners are assisted and back out racing again. There is a $10 supply charge per body area for kinesio taping during the race. If you think you may need or want taping services and don’t want to carry money or a card with you during the race, you can give Jeanne payment info ahead of time and it will only be charged if used. All card types are accepted. Basic first aid & medical triage will be available at the Woody's aid station. There is no charge for medical services during the race, but our dedicated and mostly volunteer medical crew accept and always appreciate tips. Tipping is not required, but greatly appreciated! Over the years, many have asked about paying for these professional services or offering something to say thanks, so here's your opportunity!
3.  One of the biggest reasons the nighttime runners drop at the Pistol is because they did not expect to get that cold, particularly at night. They slow down later in the race, perhaps got wet, then got cold, and boom! They drop. If you want to be prepared and have a much better chance of finishing, carefully read and then reread the advice in the next paragraph. It could save your race and possibly your life.
4.  Weather Preparedness: If you’re like us and have been checking the forecast repeatedly, you know how much it keeps changing! Please keep in mind that the current highs in the 60’s during the day and lows overnight Saturday in the 40’s equals a prime recipe for hypothermia if you are not prepared! To decrease your chances of hypothermia, if you are going to change clothes during the race to warm up, please put on dry everything! You can’t get warm until you’re dry! That may mean changing everything from head to toe - hats, gloves, shirts, bras for ladies, jackets, shorts/pants, underwear, and socks (shoes if possible too). Be prepared for whatever comes...wet, dry, cold and warm weather! Sunday looks to be Sunny and a high of 52F.
5.  Most of you might l go out too fast. Don’t do it!! Remember, for most of us, the race doesn’t start until the halfway point. So don’t floor it at the start line and then cry when you run out of gas 3/4 of the way though. Instead, pace yourself, run smart, and you’ll have a MUCH better chance of finishing and getting the award you came for.
6.  Keep you blood sugar up. It will help you have a more positive mental attitude and perform better. If you get to feeling negative or sluggish, make sure you’re getting enough calories. It will improve your mood and energy level.
7.  Running a long distance race is more mental than physical. Expect the negative mental demons to start dragging you down, usually when you’re the most tired and discouraged. Don’t listen or fight them. Just ignore them. Instead focus 100% on what it takes to keep relentless forward motion. Keep your nutrition up, especially your blood sugar. It will improve your mood and energy level. Embrace whatever the circumstances are (rain, fatigue, disappointment, etc) and keep moving. Even if you’re only walking. If your brain tells you to quit, tell it to shut up. You will quit when you’re done…and not before. You didn’t do all this training, spend all this time and money, and come all this way just to try. You came to finish…so just do it!!

During The Pistol Ultra, Coach Phil, the Mindset Mastery Coach at Quest Health & Performance, will be joining the rest of the Quest Health & Performance crew and offering cutting-edge Mindset Mastery services to take your race experience to the next level!

In the realm of racing, especially ultras, challenges can strike unexpectedly, disrupting even the best-laid plans. As Mike Tyson famously said, "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." He’s bringing an arsenal of techniques to help you navigate mental blocks and overcome setbacks. He’ll be onsite to help you stay focused and resilient throughout the race. So, let's lace up, face the challenge head-on, and emerge stronger on the other side.

Here's 5 ways Coach Phil and Mindset Mastery can help you finish your race:

  •   Maintaining Mental Resilience: Experience techniques to cope with fatigue, doubt, and discomfort.
  •   Decision-Making Support: Stuff happens, but don’t let fear or anxiety unnecessarily derail your race plan. Work with me to improve your ability to make effective choices that are consistent with your goals and best interest.
  •   Managing Negative Thoughts: Stop the spiral of negative self-talk and stinking thinking. I will help you Identify and challenge any negative thoughts (that aren’t grounded in science and medical advice), replacing them with your own inner-wisdom and constructive feedback.
  •   Staying Focused: Maintain concentration with goal-setting, mental imagery, and attentional control.
  •   Coping with Discomfort: Build resilience to reasonable physical discomfort with mindfulness and acceptance strategies.

8.  Please review the route you will be running, It will be marked with arrows on the ground and signs. But we encourage you to study your loops and turns.  Click Here to review your distance and please read the Route description.

9.   All runner email updates are posted on the website after they are sent out. Here's the link.

That’s it for now.

Enjoy your taper week. We can't wait to see you at the Pistol Party!

We’ve got several important things to cover in this final general email. So take a few minutes and let’s jump right in.

3. Make sure you’re set up and ready to go with RaceJoy.

Click here for more info

14.  Updated Weather Forecast! as of Tuesday 3/5:  Saturday Day: Cloudy with periods of light rain. Thunder possible. High 66F.  Winds SW at 10-15 mph. Saturday Night: Light rain in the evening. Low 41F.  Winds 5 - 10 mph. Sunday: Mostly cloudy skies early will become partly cloudy later in the day. High 53F. Winds 10 - 15 mph.

15. Finally review your course maps on this page scroll to the bottom to see the full map and half way down you will find the interactive map. Click here to view.

OK, that’s it! Safe travels. We can’t wait to see you and share in your accomplishments this weekend!

Speaker

Ethan Coffey has been a staple of the Knoxville running scene for more than 15 years, winning the Knoxville Track Club Grand Prix five times between 2012 and 2018. He won the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon in 2015 with a time of 2:22:58 and finished second in 2014 and 2018. He went on to win the CHKM two additional times in 2021 and 2022, becoming the only male three-time champion in the event’s history.

He was inducted into the Knoxville Track Club Hall of Fame in 2019. Nationally, Ethan has competed at the USA Road Championships at distances ranging from 10K to 50K, winning the national 50K title in 2014 with a personal best of 2:53:32. He ran a marathon personal best of 2:19:34 at the 2018 California International Marathon, narrowly missing the Olympic Trials qualifying standard of 2:19:00.

In ultra-distance racing, he completed the Badwater 135 in 2023 and has finished a wide range of events including the JFK 50 Mile, Badwater Salton Sea, No Business 100, Black Canyon 100K, and the Javelina Jundred 100 Mile. Collegiately, he competed for Carnegie Mellon University and currently works as a mechanical engineer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Ethan and The Long Run have also been long-time supporters of The Pistol Ultra, generously contributing countless volunteer hours to support runners as they pass through the Start/Finish area. We are deeply grateful for The Long Run’s continued support. They are located in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Springbrook Pool Campus

Please respect the Springbrook Pool grounds and facilities. Make sure all trash is put into the garbage cans…even if it isn’t yours. Help us make sure we leave the area at least as clean as we found it...or cleaner. Let's make the Springbrook Pool staff glad they rented their facility to us. Thank you!

Did you forget what you volunteered for?

On RunSignUp, you can usually see what you signed up to volunteer for by following these steps:

1.  Log in to your RunSignUp account at runsignup.com.
2.  In the top-right corner, click on your profile icon (or your name).
3.  Select Profile from the dropdown.
4.  Scroll down to the section called Upcoming Volunteer Events (or sometimes listed under "Upcoming Events").

-   This will show the race(s) you volunteered for.
-   You should be able to see the task, shift, and time slot you selected.
5.  If you don’t see it there, try looking under “Volunteer” on the specific race’s page (sometimes you can view or edit your volunteer         registration there).
6.  You may also check your confirmation email from when you registered to volunteer — it usually lists your assignment.

Water/Sport Drink

There are limited places to get water along the trail (there are some water fountains, but they may not be functional that time of year; there is also water in the heated restroom facilities...they may be closed at night) and we will have water/sport drink at the three aid stations. We are excited to have Tailwind nutritional drink & Gatorade available on the course again this year! Please note: we encourage you to bring your own bottle or cup (however we will have paper cups available but really want to reduce any waist). Thank you for bringing your own hydration container(s). You will be helping us save thousands of unnecessary cups from filling up our landfill. Cups will only be available for sodas. Starting Saturday night, we will have cups for items such as soup, hot drinks, etc.

Weather

The middle of March can be anything from bitterly cold to balmy, but the most probable weather is somewhere between really cold (20-30°F) with occasional ice or snow, to sunny and warmer (40-60°F). Or it could be miserable (30-40°F with rain). Sometimes we have clear skies….sometimes not. The saying here is: if you don’t like the current weather, stick around for a few minutes… it will change! The record high for mid March is 82°F, the record low is 6°F. The mid-March average high/low is 61°F/39°F.

Weather Safety
