About Tribe Tri Kids Triathlon

Come join us for a morning of fun and racing in Mount Sterling, KY!

Watch and cheer on your children as they SWIM, BIKE, and RUN all the way to the finish line. Participants will complete their swim at the MSMC Parks and Rec outdoor pool. They will then follow the designated route to the closed parking lot. Here they will find the transition area where their bikes will be staged for the bike leg. They will then complete their designated bike course again on a closed loop bike course. They will ride back to transition where they will park their bike and bike gear and take off on the run. The run course is also on a closed course. The race will finish with participants crossing the finish line in front of the MSMC office. Detailed Course and Event information in the event tab. Be Sure to register by May 24, 2026 to guarantee t-shirt size and availably.

This race will be a USAT Sanctioned race. You will need to obtain a USAT one day membership for $10 if you do not have one.

Remember, this event is for FUN! We just hope to encourage healthy, positive, active lifestyles. We want to provide an opportunity for kids to have fun and be active in a way that challenges them. We will have a sign making station to help support your young racer or all of them. Please bring your cowbells, make a sign, and help us support these young racers.

Welcome to Tribe Tri Kids Triathlon!

This is a brand new event that we hope will get the kids out running again. We hope this page will provide you with all the information you need to help you and your child have a great race day. Below you will find the following sections:

Items Needed

For this race you will need a few things.

  • Swim Suit
  • Goggles
  • Bicycle (no training wheels, electric or motorized bicycle.)
  • Helmet
  • Shoes to Run and Ride in
  • Life Jacket (if needed for 6-8 year old) *please see rules*

Recommended Items

  • Towel (to dry off after the swim)
  • Water Bottle (we will have water on course and in transition)
  • Change of clothes

RACE DAY SCHEDULE

  • 6:45 - 8:15 a.m. - Final packet pick-up, timing chip distribution, and body marking
  • 7:00 - TRANSITION AREA OPENS - you much have your timing chip, body marking, and bike/helmet sticker in order to enter transition
  • 8:25 a.m. - TRANSITION AREA CLOSES - all bikes and run gear must be ready for race start
  • 8:35 a.m. - Pre-race announcements
  • 8:45 a.m. - National Anthem
  • 8:50 a.m. - 6-9 age group LINE UP at the east side of the pool deck
  • 9:00 a.m. - 6-9 age group START
  • Next age group will line up when the prior group is finished with swim
  • Next age group will begin when prior age group are all off the bike
  • 11:00 a.m. - Awards Ceremony

***The first age group will start promptly at 9:00 a.m. The following races will begin when the previous age group is off of the bike course. All participants will need to have completed packet pick-up and staged their bike in the transition area prior to the first race.***

PACKET PICK-UP

  • Race packets may be picked up at the MSMC Parks & Rec Office on:

    • Friday 6/19/2026 from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
    • Saturday 6/20/2026 from 6:45 a.m. until 8:15 a.m.

PARKING

Overflow Parking will be used for volunteers and in the event there main parking area is completely full. 

COURSE INFO

  • The race will take place on primarily on Montgomery County School District and MSMC Parks and Recreation property.
  • Each age group will start with a time trial start (one swimmer every 10-15 seconds) at the MSMC Aquatics Center (Life Guards will be on duty). They will swim in serpentine manner, up in one lane,  go under the floating lane line, and back in the next lane.
  • Your child will then exit the pool by ladder with assistance from a volunteer, if needed, and walk, skip, jog, or run to the Transition Area. Here they will dry off put on a shirt, shoes, and bike helmet.
  • They then exit transition for the mount line and take off on the 1 mile bike loop course (1,2,or 3 Loops depending on age group). This bike course is CLOSED to traffic and takes them around the middle and high school campus.
  • Back into the Transition Area to park the bike and take off on the last stage toward the FINISH LINE.
  • The run takes the youngest age group in front of the School Board office and through the grass where they will see glimpses of the football stadium and arena. The older age groups will start in the same way but run around or through the football field past the arena and all the way to the finish line chute with parents and spectators cheering them on.
  • Course maps are below for all age groups. Look at them with your child so they see the course prior to. 
  • The course will be marked and there will be volunteers on course and in transition helping direct traffic, but we want them to feel confident when they take off. 

NOTE: In triathlons, your end-of-year age (your age on December 31st of the race year) determines your age group for the entire year
 

Course Maps

There will be one Water Station in the transition area and on the 1 and 1.5 mile run courses. The 6-8 year old group will only have access to a water station in the transition area that they can access while switching between events. After the Water Station there will be designated trash areas. Please do not litter on campus. We do recommend bringing water for before the race begins.

 

TRANSITION

  • Transition is open from 6:45 - 8:25 a.m. for gear set up. Please help us keep it clear and organized. 
  • Only athletes and One parent may enter the transition area for set up
  • Timing chip, bike number and helmet number must be on BEFORE you enter Transition.
  • Helmets are required
    • They must be on and strapped BEFORE the athletes exit transition and MUST remain on while on the bike course.

CHAPERONES

  • Participants in the 6-8 year old race may be assisted in the transition area by ONE parent to help with shoes, helmet, etc. Please be aware of other participants in the transition area.
  • Participants in the other age groups may not receive any assistance in the transition area after it is closed. 
  • Participants may not be accompanied during the swim. 
  • Participants in the 6-8 and 9-11 age groups may have a parent/guardian with them during the run course however, they may not be aided or carried in any way.

SPECTATING

CHEER ON YOUR LITTLE ATHLETE!

The course maps are available above, so this should help you get an idea where the action takes place. 

To watch the swim, you should walk around the pool along to the north and east side closest to the middle school. You will only be allowed in the marked areas shown below for the swim to watch. If your child has not actively started, please be respectful to those watching their child. There will be plenty of room outside the fence to watch until your child's age group is up or just as a general spectator. Once your swimmer has left the pool, you could walk down towards the transition area or stand a long the road to watch them bike out. They will return along this road on the bike before heading out on the run. To watch them leave on the run, move toward the transition area. Just be careful of athletes that might be still coming from the pool towards transition and from the bike towards transition. Definitely use caution anywhere you see a coned area for athletes! You are more than welcome to move about the course and see your child in different areas of the bike and run. Just make sure you at the FINISH LINE to see them cross and get their medal!

There will be sign making materials. Make your athlete or other athletes a sign and show your support!

MISCELLANEOUS RACE DETAIL

FOOD
There will be food available for athletes only at the finish line. If you want to purchase food, the concessions will be open to the public.

ENJOY the MSMC Parks and Recreation Aquatics Center
Family of participants are invited to stay to spend the day at out pool when the race is over. The concessions will be open and the water will feel great. So plan to enjoy their great facility!


GOING HOME
If your athlete is not attending the awards ceremony or stick around for a swim, they can leave as soon as we open up the transition area for removing their bikes, which will likely be around 11:30. The parking area will remain open all day. 
 

 

Events Rules

General Rules:

  1. Entries are not transferable or refundable.
  2. USAT rules apply. Unsportsmanlike conduct is grounds for disqualification.
  3. Age groups 6-8 and 9-11 may have one chaperone with them during the RUN course. 
  4. No alcohol, drugs, or stimulants before or during the race.
  5. HELMETS ARE REQUIRED.

Transition:

  1. Athletes must have their timing chip, body marking, bike sticker, and helmet sticker on prior to entering.
  2. There will be a designated area to organize your transition gear for the bike and run.
  3. Use only this area, we will not be responsible for lost items.
  4. Absolutely no glass in transition area.
  5. When the race is finished you will have to show matching numbers on the athlete and bike.
  6. There is no changing tents/room in transition. You may bring a towel and dry off to add clothes such as a t-shirt, shorts, and socks.

Swim:

  1. No glass in the pool area.
  2. There are restrooms and locker rooms inside the pool area.
  3. 6-8 age group should be lined up no later than 8:50.
  4. Once the last swimmer is out of the water in that age group there will be a 5 minutes before the pool is closed for the next race setup. This means your athlete will not get to race. Please be on time we want them to race.
  5. Swimmers will enter the water in 15 second intervals.
  6. When entering the water there will be NO DIVING.
  7. Swimmers will swim down one lane, touch the wall and go under the lane line and swim back in the next lane. You may go under the lane line as you push off the wall to come back down. 
  8. Swimmers will stay on the right side of the lane to leave room if someone is a faster swimmer. 
  9. If a pass is needed touch the swimmer in front on the toes or feet to let them know. Do not swim on to the backs of other swimmers.
  10. Always pass on the LEFT.
  11. Wet Suits, Fins, or artificial propulsion are not allowed.
  12. Worn floatation devices may be used in the 6-8 age group. However, they will not be eligible for awards. 
  13. Athletes may hold on to the lane lines to rest, but MAY NOT make forward movement. 
  14. When exiting the pool, walk until you get outside the pool facility to the sidewalk. 

Bike:

  1. Please review the bike course map online or at packet pick-up
  2. Helmets must be on and buckled before leaving transition.
  3. Torso must be covered with shirt, trisuit, or one piece swim suit (females)
  4. Bib number does not need to be worn on the bike, but if its affixed to your shirt for the run that is ok.
  5. No riding in transition. Bikes must be pushed to the mount/dismount line.
  6. The bike can be mounted after the line on the way out and before the line on the way back in to transition. 
  7. The course will be well marked with volunteers around to help guided athletes. 
  8. Stay to the right at all time do not swerve to allow faster riders to pass.
  9. Stay 3 bike lengths away from the bike in front. If you need to pass, do so on the left of the bike you are passing.
  10. No headphones on the bike. 
  11. When back in transition rack your bike in the same place it started.

Run:

  1. Please review the run course map online or at packet pick-up.
  2. Your bib number must be worn and VISIBLE during the run, either on a race belt or affixed to a shirt or shorts.
  3. Stay to the right accept to pass.
  4. Follow the marked course and volunteer direction. Going off course or cutting course will lead to disqualification.
  5. There will be designated trash areas after water stations. DO NOT LITTER. 
  6. No headphone on the run. There will be music playing throughout the course.
  7. MOST IMPORTANT RULE: Smile and Celebrate when you cross the finish line. YOU MADE IT. 

Timing Chip/Finish Line:

  1. You must present your race number on race day to receive your timing chip.
  2. Your timing chip should be with you at all times until the end of the race. (You will be responsible for lost timing chips.)
  3. Timing chips must be worn around the ankle during the race. 
  4. Make sure you cross the timing mats as you enter/exit transition and cross the finish line. 
  5. Timing chips and strap must be returned immediately after you cross the finish line. You will be charged a $75.00 fee for any lost or un-returned chips or bands.

Swim Stage - Conducted in the MSMC Aquatic Center pool - 8 lanes x 25 yardsTime Trial Start - 10 to 15 second spacing between each swimmer
Some age groups swim multiple laps. Swimmers will move under the lane marker/float after reaching each length of the pool.
Bike Stage - A 1 mile out & back course on Technology Center Drive (mostly) will be used.Some age groups ride multiple laps of the bike course.
Run Stage - Loop course containing a mix of turf and hard surfaces.Each age group uses the same exit from the transition area and the same Finish Line

This may be sooner or later than the listed times. All participants will need to have completed packet pick-up and staged their bike in the transition area prior to the first race.
